Photovoltaic devices employing vacuum-deposited perovskite layers

2015

Organic–inorganic perovskites have emerged as one of the most promising materials for future optoelectronics applications, most notably photovoltaics. The achievement of high-efficiency solar cells has been possible mainly through the understanding of the perovskite formation during the solution deposition of thin films. Vacuum deposition methods have also been developed and have intrinsic advantages over solution-based processing, including control over the film thickness and composition, low-temperature processing, and the possibility of preparing multilayer structures. This article summarizes the latest advances in the vacuum deposition of hybrid perovskites, with an emphasis on the appl…

Toward Metal Halide Perovskite Nonlinear Photonics.

2018

The possibility of controlling light using the nonlinear optical properties of photonic devices opens new points of view in information and communications technology applications. In this Perspective, we review and analyze the potential role of metal halide perovskites in a framework different from their usual one in photovoltaic and light-emitting devices, namely, the one where they can play as nonlinear photonic materials. We contextualize this new role by comparing the few extant results on their nonlinear optical properties to those of other known nonlinear materials. As a result of this analysis, we provide a vision of future developments in photonics that can be expected from this new…

Vacuum-Deposited Microcavity Perovskite Photovoltaic Devices

2021

The interaction between semiconductor materials and electromagnetic fields resonating in microcavities or the light-matter coupling is of both fundamental and practical significance for improving the performance of various photonic technologies. The demonstration of light-matter coupling effects in the emerging perovskite-based optoelectronic devices via optical pumping and electrical readout (e.g., photovoltaics) and vice versa (e.g., light-emitting diodes), however, is still scarce. Here, we demonstrate the microcavity formation in vacuum-deposited methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, MAPI) p-i-n photovoltaic devices fabricated between two reflecting silver electrodes. We tune the posi…

Nonprecious Copper‐Based Transparent Top Electrode via Seed Layer–Assisted Thermal Evaporation for High‐Performance Semitransparent n‐i‐p Perovskite …

2019

Semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST‐PSCs) are highly attractive for applications in building‐integrated photovoltaics as well as in multijunction tandem devices. To fabricate high‐performance ST‐PSCs, suitable transparent top electrodes are strongly needed. Dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD) multilayer structures have been shown to be promising candidates, though generally based on high‐value metals such as gold or silver, the latter causing also stability issues by reacting with perovskite. Here, a novel DMD transparent electrode based on nonprecious, less‐reactive copper is developed via thermal evaporation and used as a top anode in the fabrication of high‐performance semitranspare…

Enamine-based hole transporting materials for vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells

2020

In a short period of time, the rapid development of perovskite solar cells attracted a lot of attention in the science community with the record for power conversion efficiency being broken every year. Despite the fast progress in power conversion efficiency there are still many issues that need to be solved before starting large scale commercial applications, such as, among others, the difficult and costly synthesis and usage of toxic solvents for the deposition of hole transport materials (HTMs). We herein report new enamine-based charge transport materials obtained via a simple one step synthesis procedure, from commercially available precursors and without the use of expensive organomet…

Highly Stable Thin Films Based on Novel Hybrid 1D (PRSH)PbX3 Pseudo-Perovskites

2021

In this study, the structure and morphology, as well as time, ultraviolet radiation, and humidity stability of thin films based on newly developed 1D (PRSH)PbX3 (X = Br, I) pseudo-perovskite materials, containing 1D chains of face-sharing haloplumbate octahedra, are investigated. All films are strongly crystalline already at room temperature, and annealing does not promote further crystallization or film reorganization. The film microstructure is found to be strongly influenced by the anion type and, to a lesser extent, by the DMF/DMSO solvent volume ratio used during film deposition by spin-coating. Comparison of specular X-ray diffraction and complementary grazing incidence X-ray diffract…

Role of TiO2 in Highly Efficient Solar Cells

2021

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium. It has a wide range of applications. It has three metastable phases, which can be synthesized easily by chemical routes. Usage of TiO2 in thin-film solar cells has gained much attention in increasing the performance of the cell. The objectives are to harvest the freely available earth’s energy and to gain expertise in yielding a maximum conversion efficiency. Various strategies are employed to face the challenges in improving the efficiency of solar cells. This study provides a broad view of the usage of different forms of TiO2 layers, like nanochannel, porous, nanotubes, and mesoporous layers, in enhancing electron injecti…

Effects of Frequency Dependence of the External Quantum Efficiency of Perovskite Solar Cells

2018

Perovskite solar cells are known to show very long response time scales, on the order of milliseconds to seconds. This generates considerable doubt over the validity of the measured external quantum efficiency (EQE) and consequently the estimation of the short-circuit current density. We observe a variation as high as 10% in the values of the EQE of perovskite solar cells for different optical chopper frequencies between 10 and 500 Hz, indicating a need to establish well-defined protocols of EQE measurement. We also corroborate these values and obtain new insights regarding the working mechanisms of perovskite solar cells from intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy measurements, iden…

Integrated Optical Amplifier-Photodetector on a Wearable Nanocellulose Substrate

2018

Flexible optoelectronics has emerged as an outstanding platform to pave the road toward vanguard technology advancements. As compared to conventional rigid substrates, a flexible technology enables mechanical deformation while maintaining stable performance. The advantages include not only the development to novel applications, but also the implementation of a wearable technology directly in contact with a curved surface. Here the monolithic integration of a perovskite‐based optical waveguide amplifier together with a photodetector on a nanocellulose substrate is shown to demonstrate the feasibility of a stretchable signal manipulation and receptor system fabricated on a biodegradable mater…
