Hyperparasitism and seasonal patterns of parasitism as potential causes of low top-down control in Euproctis chrysorrhoea (Lymantriidae)
2012
Pest suppression is an important ecosystem service provided by biodiversity, though antagonistic interactions may jeopardize its impact on pest suppression. Hyperparasitoids may release herbivore populations from natural enemy pressure and lead to outbreaks directly due to parasitism as well as indirect through behavioural interference. In a previous study we reported that in native populations of Euproctis chrysorrhoea L. (Lymantriidae) primary parasitism was very low and outbreaks were more likely in coastal habitats than inland. Here we hypothesise that hyperparasitoids are the underlying cause of such patterns by reporting data on direct hyperparasitism rates as well as seasonal pattern…
Contrasting reproductive traits of competing parasitoids facilitate coexistence on a shared host pest in a biological control perspective
2022
BACKGROUND: Interspecific competition in insect parasitoids is an important ecological phenomenon that has relevant implications for biological pest control. To date, interspecific intrinsic (=larval) competition has been intensively studied, while investigations on extrinsic (=adult) competition have often lagged behind. In this study we examined the role played by parasitoid reproductive traits and host clutch size on the outcome of extrinsic competition between Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev), two egg parasitoids of the pest Nezara viridula (L). Laboratory experiments were conducted by allowing both parasitoid species to exploit an egg mass made of …
EnglishThis paper deals with an already known series of paintings titled The Expulsion of the Moriscos from the Kingdom of Valencia and provides unpublished documentation of a commission made by Rodrigo Calderon to the viceroy of Valencia, Marquis of Caracena…
Identification of new viruses specific to the honey bee mite Varroa destructor
2019
AbstractLarge-scale colony losses among managed Western honey bees have become a serious threat to the beekeeping industry in the last decade. There are multiple factors contributing to these losses but the impact of Varroa destructor parasitism is by far the most important, along with the contribution of some pathogenic viruses vectored by the mite. So far, more than 20 viruses have been identified infecting the honey bee, most of them RNA viruses. They may be maintained either as covert infections or causing severe symptomatic infections, compromising the viability of the colony. In silico analysis of available transcriptomic data obtained from mites collected in the USA and Europe as wel…
Efficiency of QuEChERS approach for determining 52 pesticide residues in honey and honey bees
2016
A comparison between QuEChERS and other pesticide extraction procedures for honey and honey bee matrices is discussed. Honey bee matrix was extracted by solvent based procedure whereas solid phase extraction was the protocol for the honey matrix. The citrate buffered QuEChERS method was used for both matrices. The methods were evaluated regarding cost (equipment and reagents), time, accuracy, precision, sensitivity and versatility. The results proved that the QuEChERS protocol was the most efficient method for the extraction of the selected pesticides in both matrices. QuEChERS is the most economical and less time-consuming procedure.SPE and solvent-based extraction procedures show equivale…
Effect of primary mild stresses on resilience and resistance of the nitrate reducer community to a subsequent severe stress
2008
International audience; The factors regulating soil microbial stability (e.g. resistance and resilience) are poorly understood, even though microorganisms are essential for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we tested whether a functional microbial community subjected to different primary mild stresses was equally resistant or resilient to a subsequent severe stress. The nitrate reducers were selected as model community and analysed in terms of nitrate reduction rates and genetic structure by narG PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting. Heat, copper and atrazine were used as primary stresses and mercury at a high concentration as a severe stress. None of the primary …
Assessment of Bioremediation Strategies for Explosives-Contaminated Sites
2013
Large amounts of soil and water have been contaminated with energetic compounds as a result of the manufacture, storage, testing, use and disposal of munitions as well as the use of nitroaromatic and nitramines as chemical feedstock for synthesis of pesticides, herbicides, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Historically, TNT (2 methyl-1,3,5, trinitrobenzene) has been the most widely used military explosive (Nicklin et al. 1999; Kulkarni and Chaudhari 2007b). Since TNT is toxic, mutagenic, and also highly energetic (Rosenblatt et al. 1991), TNT contamination has a serious impact on the environment and also threatens human health (Maeda et al. 2007).
The symbolic landscape of an illiberal regime: glorifying the interwar era in post-2010 Budapest
2022
Since 2010 the Fidesz party, led by Viktor Orbán, has gradually eroded democratic institutions in Hungary using methods commonly applied by illiberal and authoritarian regimes. Previous studies explored how memory politics play a crucial role in maintaining the populist rhetoric, essential for Fidesz rule. This article aims to shed light on the spatial representation of Fidesz power in urban space. Drawing on the literature of symbolic space appropriation in general and the memory politics of Fidesz in particular, I analyze the transformation of two emblematic, centrally located squares in the capital of Hungary: Liberty and Kossuth Square. I argue that the interventions/transformations of …
Measured and Modeled Residue Dynamics of Famoxadone and Oxathiapiprolin in Tomato Fields
2018
A reliable analytical method for the simultaneous determination of famoxadone and oxathiapiprolin dissipation kinetics as well as the metabolites of oxathiapiprolin (IN-E8S72 and IN-WR791) in tomato and soil was developed. We studied the dissipation of famoxadone and oxathiapiprolin in tomatoes grown using different kinetic curves in the area of Beijing in 2015 and 2016. Our results show that the most suitable model for two fungicides in 2015 and 2016 was first-order kinetic and second-order kinetic with the half-lives of 3.4 to 5.2 and 2.4 to 3.0 days, respectively. In addition, we applied the dynamic plant uptake model dynamiCROP and combined it with results from the field experiments to …
Pesticide contamination in water and sediment of the aquatic systems of the Natural Park of the Albufera of Valencia (Spain) during the rice cultivat…
2021
The Natural Park of the Albufera (Valencia, Spain) is a Mediterranean wetland where rice cultivation dominates the agricultural activity. The purpose of this study was to offer broader information about the current state of the wetland assessing the contamination by pesticides in four aquatic habitats during the rice cultivation period in 2016. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine the pesticides in water and sediment samples from the rice fields, Lake Albufera and irrigation and outlet channels. 21 pesticides were detected in our samples (seven already forbidden by European legislation). Higher values than 10000 ng L of accumulated pesticid…
