Antifungal Activity of Biocontrol Agents In Vitro and Potential Application to Reduce Mycotoxins (Aflatoxin B1 and Ochratoxin A)

Food bio-preservatives are requested as substituents of chemical pesticides in food. The aim of this study was to carry out a screening of twenty biocontrol agents (BCAs) for their potential fungicidal activity in vitro. Twenty BCAs were tested against ten pathogenic fungi. Some of the cell-free supernatants (CFS) tested showed in vitro antifungal activity versus pathogenic fungi. The highest fungicidal activity was observed in the fermented CFS of Paenibacillus chibensis CECT 375, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECT 493, and Pantoea agglomerans CECT 850, which showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values of 125 and 250 g/L, respectively. Occupational exposure to endocrine disruptors and lymphoma risk in a multi-centric European study

Background: Incidence rates of lymphoma are usually higher in men than in women, and oestrogens may protect against lymphoma. Methods: We evaluated occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) among 2457 controls and 2178 incident lymphoma cases and subtypes from the European Epilymph study. Results: Over 30 years of exposure to EDCs compared to no exposure was associated with a 24% increased risk of mature B-cell neoplasms (P-trend=0.02). Associations were observed among men, but not women. Conclusions: Prolonged occupational exposure to endocrine disruptors seems to be moderately associated with some lymphoma subtypes. © 2015 Cancer Research UK. All rights reserved.

Comparative diazinon toxicity in guppy and zebra fish: Different role of oxidative metabolism

Guppies pretreated with 1.1 μmol/L diazinon (0.5 times the LC50 with the guppy) for 7 d were less susceptible to the toxicity of the compound. The LC50 in these fish was about five times higher than that in nonpretreated animals. The lethal body burden and the slope of the concentration-response curve of diazinon in pretreated guppies were similar to those in zebra fish. The 7-d pretreatment of zebra fish with 12 μmol/L diazinon (0.5 times the LC50 with the zebra fish) did not affect the susceptibility of this species to diazinon.
