Photostability assessment of natural pyrethrins using halloysite nanotube carrier system

Natural pyrethrins are one of the most used pesticides and insect repellents employed for domestic or agronomic use. However, they are highly hydrophobic and suffer from insolubility in water media and ready decomposition by photochemical, and oxidative actions. These aspects hamper their long-term storage and applicability. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a nanomaterial based on the loading of pyrethrum extract (PE) into natural, low-cost, and eco-compatible halloysite nanotubes (Hal). Assessment of two extraction methods to determine pesticides in soils, sediments and sludges. Application to the Túria River Basin.

Pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) extraction methods were optimized for the simultaneous determination of 50 pesticides in sediment, soils and sewage sludge. For QuEChERS development, several buffers and dispersive solid-phase extraction clean-up (dSPE) sorbents were tested. In the PLE method, several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, such as organic solvent, amount of sample, cell size, temperature, pressure, static time, number of cycles and % of flush, as well as sorbent used for the on-line clean up, were also evaluated. Contaminants of emerging concern in freshwater fish from four Spanish Rivers.

This study investigated the occurrence of 135 contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) – pharmaceuticals, pesticides, a set of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) (parabens, bisphenols, hormones, triazoles, organophosphorus flame retardants and triclosan), UV-filters, perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) – in 59 fish samples, collected in 2010 in 4 Spanish Rivers (Guadalquivir, Júcar, Ebro and Llobregat). Pesticide monitoring in the basin of Llobregat River (Catalonia, Spain) and comparison with historical data.

Through an extensive sampling in the Llobregat River basin, the presence of 50 currently used pesticides in water, sediment, and biota was assessed. Pesticides were detected primarily in water (up to 56% of the analytes), whereas their presence in sediments was more intermittent, and in biota was scarce. Those at high concentrations in water were the benzimidazoles (carbendazim in 22% of the samples up to 697ngL-1), the organophosphorus (malathion in 54% of the samples up to 320ngL-1), and the ureas (diuron in 54% of the samples up to 159ngL-1). Screening of currently used pesticides in water, sediments and biota of the Guadalquivir River Basin (Spain)

The occurrence of 50 currently used pesticides and their transformation products in surface and waste waters, sediment and fish in the Guadalquivir River Basin was determined in 2010 and 2011. After selective sample extraction, pesticides were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The contamination profile in water and sediments is marked by the presence of organophosphorus and triazines. Transformation products were even at higher concentrations than parent pesticides. Pesticide exposure and women's health

Background Research on pesticide-related health effects has been mostly focused in industrialized countries and in men. This paper discusses critical issues related to women's pesticide exposure and its effects on women's health. Methods The literature on pesticides was reviewed with emphasis on data related to women. Attention was focused on research suggesting different conditions of exposure or different response to pesticides by sex. Fenitrothion uptake and bioconcentration in the European eel(Anguilla anguilla)

Eels (Anguilla anguilla) were exposed to 0.02 mg/L of the organophosphorus pesticide fenitrothion during 144 hours in semi‐static conditions. BCF, intBCF, uptake rate constants (Ku) and elimination rate constants (Kd) of fenitrothion were determined in brain, gills, blood and muscle tissues of the eel. A simple one‐compartment model fitted the uptake and elimination characteristics. Plateau were reached at different times in the different tissues: at 24 hr in gills, 72 hr in brain and blood and 120 hr in muscle tissue. BCF were ranged from 117 for blood to 658 for muscle. Muscle tissue showed the highest BCF, intBCF, Ku and the lowest Kd .

An approach to the diazinon toxicity in the European eel: bioaccumulation studies

Abstract The acute toxicity effects of diazinon on European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) were examined using short-term exposures in static conditions. In these conditions the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) was 0.086 mg/1. In addition, the eels were exposed to two sublethal diazinon concentrations, 0.042 and 0.056 mg/1 (1/2 and 2/3 LC 50 96-h, respectively) for different exposure times, till a maximum of 96 h, and bioaccumulation and clearance of this insecticide in liver, muscle, gill and blood tissues were studied.
