Re-expression of C/EBP alpha induces CYP2B6, CYP2C9 and CYP2D6 genes in HepG2 cells.
1998
Cytochrome P450 (CYP) activity is very low or even absent in human hepatomas, a phenomenon that is accompanied by low levels of some liver transcription factors, notably C/EBP alpha. To investigate a possible link between this transcription factor and hepatic CYP expression, we have stably transfected HepG2 cells with a C/EBP alpha vector containing a Zn-inducible metallothionein promoter. Expression of functional C/EBP alpha up to liver levels concomitantly increased the mRNAs of several members of the CYP2 family (2B6, 2C9 and 2D6), suggesting that this transcription factor may play a relevant role in controlling the hepatic expression of CYP enzymes.
Pulse rate variability measurement with camera-based photoplethysmography
2021
Electrocardiogram (ECG) has been used by doctors and biomedical researchers to measure cardiac parameters such as Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HR is a medical index for health monitoring and the HRV is a sign to reflect the activities of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and can be used for emotion recognition applications. Recently, remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has evolved as a non-contact technique for measuring vital cardiac signs. Compared with ECG, this technique is non-invasive, low-cost, comfortable and possibly utilized in long-term monitoring. It has great potential in remote health assessment and emotion detection. However, the rPPG is a video-based method,…
Cascaded H-Bridges Multielvel Inverters: grid connected advanced applications
Power electronics is going to increase in the modern electrical systems. It is well known that the use of power electronics allows the management and the control of the energy flow, obtaining voltage and current waveforms suitable for electrical loads. In this scenario, multilevel power converters are finding increased attention in industry and academia as one of the promising choices of electronic conversion thanks to their features and many different application fields with high power and medium voltage. Moreover, they are fundamental in interfacing electric grid to high power renewable energy systems (i.e. PV, Wind farm, Biomass, Fuel Cell etc.). Nowadays, the research is focused on the …
Exercise and antioxidant supplements in the elderly
2013
Abstract Both exercise and aging increase reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can result in damage to cells. Aging is the result of damage caused by ROS to the mitochondrial genome in post mitotic cells and numerous studies have demonstrated an increase in ROS or their byproducts with exercise. ROS can cause oxidative stress as they overwhelm the antioxidant cellular defenses. Therefore interventions aimed at limiting or inhibiting ROS production, such as supplementation with antioxidant vitamins, should be able to reduce fatigue during muscle contraction and the rate of formation of aging changes with a consequent reduction of the aging rate and disease pathogenesis. However, it has been …
Computational identification of cell-specific variable regions in ChIP-seq data.
2019
ABSTRACT Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) is used to identify genome-wide DNA regions bound by proteins. Several sources of variation can affect the reproducibility of a particular ChIP-seq assay, which can lead to a misinterpretation of where the protein under investigation binds to the genome in a particular cell type. Given one ChIP-seq experiment with replicates, binding sites not observed in all the replicates will usually be interpreted as noise and discarded. However, the recent discovery of high-occupancy target (HOT) regions suggests that there are regions where binding of multiple transcription factors can be identified. To investigate these regions,…
Poly(glycolide) multi-arm star polymers: Improved solubility via limited arm length.
2010
Due to the low solubility of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), its use is generally limited to the synthesis of random copolyesters with other hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, or to applications that permit direct processing from the polymer melt. Insolubility is generally observed for PGA when the degree of polymerization exceeds 20. Here we present a strategy that allows the preparation of PGA-based multi-arm structures which significantly exceed the molecular weight of processable oligomeric linear PGA (<1000 g/mol). This was achieved by the use of a multifunctional hyperbranched polyglycerol (PG) macroinitiator and the tin(II)-2-ethylhexanoate catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of gly…

Taxonomic Study of Linaria depauperata and L. supina Complexes in Eastern Spain
2001
Abstract Morphological characteristics were studied in two groups of closely related taxa of section Supinae , Linaria depauperata and L. supina , from eastern Spain. Vegetative, floral and seed characteristics were of little use in distinguishing between these taxa as the ranges for all the taxa studied overlapped. Flower colour could be used as a diagnostic character for some but not all of these taxa. Seed coat characters were of high taxonomic value, both when trying to distinguish among these two groups, and the taxa included within them, and also when establishing relationships among the taxa studied. Some differences were found in the indumentum distribution and density. Three types …
How complex is the evolution of small mammal communities during the Late Glacial in southwest France?
2016
11 pages; International audience; The Late Glacial was a slow gradual warming associated with short, cold events that occurred between 18.0 and 11.7 ka cal. BP. Pollen analyses from deep-sea and lacustrine cores have well documented the evolution of floral communities in western Europe and suggest that climatic fluctuations influenced the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the exact impact of these climate changes on small faunal communities in southwest France is still poorly documented. Peyrazet Cave is an archaeological site located in the Lot (France) that has been excavated since 2008 and has yielded a Late Glacial sequence dated between 15.5 and 11.1 ka cal. BP. Thousands o…
Kirkman's tetrahedron and the fifteen schoolgirl problem
2011
We give a visual construction of two solutions to Kirkman's fifteen schoolgirl problem by combining the fifteen simplicial elements of a tetrahedron. Furthermore, we show that the two solutions are nonisomorphic by introducing a new combinatorial algorithm. It turns out that the two solutions are precisely the two nonisomorphic arrangements of the 35 projective lines of PG(3,2) into seven classes of five mutually skew lines. Finally, we show that the two solutions are interchanged by the canonical duality of the projective space.
