A new breath of life for anoxia.
2008
The middle of the Cretaceous (120–80 Ma) was one of the warmest periods of the past 300 m.y., with tropical sea-surface temperatures well over 30 °C ([Puceat et al., 2007][1]; [Forster et al., 2007a][2]) and atmospheric CO2 levels much higher than today. Therefore this period can give us crucial
New Ordovician mitrates (Echinodermata, Stylophora) from the Ancenis Basin (South Armorican Domain, France): Palaeogeographic and palaeoenvironmental…
2006
8 pages; International audience; Fossil echinoderms are extremely rare in Ordovician deposits of the South Armorican Domain (SAD), a structurally complex area stacked to the Medio-North Armorican Domain during the Hercynian orogeny. Two new occurrences of mitrate stylophorans are documented in the eastern part of the SAD (Ancenis Basin). The youngest known specimen of Lagynocystis pyramidalis is described from the Schistes du Fresne Formation (Late Ordovician). Mitrocystites mitra is reported from the Pierre Meliere Formation (Middle Ordovician), and for the first time, outside of Bohemia. The presence of these two cool-adapted taxa (both abundant in the Prague Basin) in the Ancenis Basin d…
Hettangian ammonites from the old iron mine of Beauregard (Thoste, Côte-d’Or, France).
2012
The ammonite fauna of the old iron mine of Beauregard is reviewed. Only nine specimens from this locality are presently known. They are housed in the collections of the “Musée de Semur-en-Auxois”, of the “Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle” (Paris) and of the “Ecole Nationale Supérieuredes Mines” (Claude Bernard University, Lyon 1). The age, or possibly the ages, of these ammonites remain to precise in a coarsely defined time-span including the upper part of the early Hettangian and the middle Hettangian (pro parte?). These fossils, usually finely preserved, were collected during the nineteenth century thanks to intensive mining in the Thoste-Beauregard area. They are illustrated uniforml…
Parallel and scalable short-read alignment on multi-core clusters using UPC++
2016
[Abstract]: The growth of next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets poses a challenge to the alignment of reads to reference genomes in terms of alignment quality and execution speed. Some available aligners have been shown to obtain high quality mappings at the expense of long execution times. Finding fast yet accurate software solutions is of high importance to research, since availability and size of NGS datasets continue to increase. In this work we present an efficient parallelization approach for NGS short-read alignment on multi-core clusters. Our approach takes advantage of a distributed shared memory programming model based on the new UPC++ language. Experimental results using the …
Classifier Optimized for Resource-constrained Pervasive Systems and Energy-efficiency
2017
Computational intelligence is often used in smart environment applications in order to determine a user’scontext. Many computational intelligence algorithms are complex and resource-consuming which can beproblematic for implementation devices such as FPGA:s, ASIC:s and low-level microcontrollers. Thesetypes of devices are, however, highly useful in pervasive and mobile computing due to their small size,energy-efficiency and ability to provide fast real-time responses. In this paper, we propose a classi-fier, CORPSE, specifically targeted for implementation in FPGA:s, ASIC:s or low-level microcontrollers.CORPSE has a small memory footprint, is computationally inexpensive, and is suitable for…
Upgrade of the ALICE Experiment Letter Of Intent
2014
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is studying the physics of strongly interacting matter, and in particular the properties of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), using proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. These plans are presented in the ALICE Upgrade Letter of Intent, submitted to the LHCC (LHC experiments Committee) in September 2012. In order to fully exploit the physics reach of the LHC in this field, high- precision measurements of the heavy-flavour production…
An Embedded Biometric Sensor for Ubiquitous Authentication
2013
Communication networks and distributed technologies move people towards the era of ubiquitous computing. An ubiquitous environment needs many authentication sensors for users recognition, in order to provide a secure infrastructure for both user access to resources and services and information management. Today the security requirements must ensure secure and trusted user information to protect sensitive data resource access and they could be used for user traceability inside the platform. Conventional authentication systems, based on username and password, are in crisis since they are not able to guarantee a suitable security level for several applications. Biometric authentication systems…
Effects of Cyclooxygenase Inhibitors on Apoptotic Neuroretinal Cells
2008
Glaucoma is characterized by a loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) which is associated with a decrease of visual function. Neuroprotective agents as a new therapeutic strategy could prevent the remaining neurons from apoptotic cell death. Previous studies have shown the involvement of the Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 signalling in the apoptotic death of neurons. Herein we investigated the neuroprotective effect of COX-1/COX-2- and selective COX-2- inhibitors on apoptotic. R28, a neuroretinal cell line and determined the PGE2 levels by ELISA. Furthermore we investigated differences in protein expression in the cells after exposure to elevated pressure compared to untreated cells by ProteinChip a…
