Testing and linearity calibration of films of phenol compounds exposed to thermal neutron field for EPR dosimetry

2015

This paper reports the preliminary results obtained by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements on films of IRGANOX® 1076 phenols with and without low content (5% by weight) of gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) exposed in the thermal column of the Triga Mark II reactor of LENA (Laboratorio Energia Nucleare Applicata) of Pavia (Italy). Thanks to their size, the phenolic films here presented are good devices for the dosimetry of beams with high dose gradient and which require accurate knowledge of the precise dose delivered. The dependence of EPR signal as function of neutron dose was investigated in the fluence range between 10(11) cm(-2) and 10(14) cm(-2). Linearity of EPR response was fou…

What olive oil for healthy ageing

2015

The olive tree originated in Asia Minor around 6000 years ago and then spread to all the Mediterranean basin. Olive oil is extracted from the pulp of its fruits [1–3]. Many studies show that the nutritional pattern of the so-called Mediterranean Diet is associated with a lower incidence of age-related diseases related to inflammation and oxidative stress, such as cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and cancer [4–7]. It is now clear that olive oil, as a main source of fat, must play a key role in explaining the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.

Comparison of the photoinductive properties of commercial, synthetic and soil-extracted humic substances

1997

Abstract The photochemical behavior of a fulvic acid (FA) and several humic acids (HAs) were studied. These synthetic, commercial or soils-extracted humic substances were compared according to their abilities to sensitize the formation of singlet oxygen and to photoinduce the transformation of aromatic compounds such as 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) and 1,1-dimethyl-3-phenylurea (fenuron). Singlet oxygen was detected by ESR experiments, and quantum yields of singlet oxygen formation were measured by using 1,2-difuranyl-2-hydroxyethanone (furion) as a probe molecule. The photoinductive capacities were evaluated from the kinetics of TMP and fenuron disappearance. The humic substances that showe…

Determination of phenolic compounds in surface waters using high-performance liquid chromatography and molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction

2021

An effective and reliable analytical method based on molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MI-SPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector was developed to simultaneously determine four phenolic compounds: bisphenol A, 2-phenylphenol, tert-octylphenol and nonylphenol. A molecularly imprinted polymer that can selectively recognize bisphenol A and alkylphenols was developed. A bulk polymerization method using bisphenol A as a template, acrylamide as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent, acetonitrile as porogenic solvent and 1,1’-azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile) as initiator was applied. This polymer was applied …

Over-evaluation of total flavonoids in grape skin extracts containing sulphur dioxide

2015

Abstract Sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) proved to increase absorbance at 280 nm of grape skin and seed extracts containing it, diluted with ethanol–HCl to assess total flavonoids and anthocyanins in the same analysis. Additional absorbance at 280 nm was also observed in acetone:H 2 O extracts, if the acetone had not completely evaporated before the extracts were diluted with a solvent. Flavonoids were correctly quantified in the extracts when SO 2 or acetone were removed by solid-phase extraction with a C 18 RP as sorbent and methanol as eluting solvent.

Role of Wood Macromolecules on Selective Sorption of Phenolic Compounds by Wood

2008

Wood is a complex structure of various macromolecules, mainly cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Although the sorption process of some organic compounds by wood has been elucidated, the relative contribution of its different fractions in the sorption mechanism is not clearly determined. Certain works predict the amount of organic compounds sorbed on wood as a direct relationship to its lignin fraction. All wood macromolecules, however, seem to have the capacity to sorb organic compounds. Sorption of phenolic compounds on individual wood macromolecules has been studied and compared to that on wood. Wood-water partition coefficients ( K wood) for phenolic volatiles and their sorption rates…

Stepwise synthesis and selective dimerisation of bis- and trisloop tetra-urea calix[4]arenes.

2008

Tetra-urea calix[4]arenes substituted with four mono- or bisalkenyl residues have been converted into bis- or tetraloop compounds by intramolecular olefin metathesis, with use of a tetratosylurea calix[4]arene as template. The same strategy has now been used to synthesise trisloop compounds and bisloop compounds with adjacent loops, completing the series of the loop-containing tetra-urea derivatives. A tetra-urea calix[4]arene of the AABB type, where A stands for a bisalkenyl- and B for a monoalkenyl-substituted urea unit, was used as precursor for the three loops. It was easily synthesised from a tetraamino calix[4]arene in which two adjacent amino groups were Boc-protected. The ABCB-type …

Guarana seed extracts as a useful strategy to extend the shelf life of pork patties: UHPLC-ESI/QTOF phenolic profile and impact on microbial inactiva…

2018

Abstract The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. Five treatments were prepared: i) without natural antioxidant [control (negative control)], ii) with BHT at 200 mg/kg (positive control), and iii) with three different concentrations: 250  mg/kg (guarana seed low dose-GSL), 500  mg/kg (guarana seed medium dose-GSM) and 1000  mg/kg (guarana seed high dose-GSH) of guarana extracts, respectively. The pH, instrumental colour (CIE L*, a*, b*), total viable counts (TVC), Pseudomonas spp. counts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and carbonyl co…

HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS2analytical profile of extracts obtained from purple sweet potato after green ultrasound-assisted extraction

2016

International audience; Ultrasound pre-treatment (UAE) was applied to assist the extraction of valuable compounds (polyphenols (especially anthocyanins), and proteins) from purple sweet potato (PSP). Under optimum conditions (ultrasound time (40 min); supplementary hot extraction (80 °C) up to 120 min; pH: 2.5; ethanol concentration: 58%), the highest concentrations of polyphenols (3.877 mg/g), anthocyanins (0.293 mg/g), and proteins (0.753 mg/g) were found, with minimal specific energy consumption (8406 J/mg).Moreover, anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin polyphenols in PSP extract from optimized extraction temperature were identified using HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS2. The major identified anthocyanins we…
