All polymeric chemosensitizers proposed thus far have a linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrophilic block. To testify whether precisely this chemical structure and architecture of the hydrophilic block is a prerequisite for chemosensitization, we tested a series of novel block copolymers containing a hyperbranched polyglycerol segment as a hydrophilic block (PPO-NG copolymers) on multi-drug-resistant (MDR) tumor cells in culture. PPO-NG copolymers inhibited MDR of three cell lines, indicating that the linear PEG can be substituted for a hyperbranched polyglycerol block without loss of the polymers' chemosensitizing activity. Abstract Changes in the cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of bacteria Zymomonas mobilis 113S were examined in response to varied environmental conditions (temperature and phase of growth, concentration or type of carbon source, the presence of amphiphilic compounds). The values of CSH were elevated with a decreased growth rate over the time of cultivation up to 20–22% at the stationary phase. CSH values increased proportionally with the growth of cultivation temperature and concentration of carbon source (glucose or sucrose) or amphiphilic compound (aliphatic alcohols, Tween80) in the medium. Unusual basement layer in the midgut of gammaridean Niphargus virei Chevreux (Crustacea, Amphipoda).

The basement membrane of the midgut and posterior caeca epithelium in the gammaridean amphipod Niphargus virei Chevreux, 1896 is made of an unusual structure. This basal lamina, properly called “basal layer”, shows a dense sheet formed by a system of dense hexagonal plates connected by thin filaments. Histochemical studies and enzymatic reactions lead to the conclusion that these structures are proteinaceous, without collagenous protein, and embedded in a neutral polysaccharide matrix. The possible mechanical significance of these mesenteric structures is discussed.

This paper describes the synthesis of functional amphiphilic poly( N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide)-block-poly(lauryl methacrylate) copolymers by RAFT polymerization via the intermediate step of activated ester block copolymers (pentafluoro-phenyl methacrylate). Block copolymers with molecular weights from 12000-28000 g/mol and PDIs of about 1.2 have been obtained. The amphiphilic diblock copolymers form stable super structures (nanoaggregates) by self-organization in aqueous solution. Abstract The interactions between the zwitterionic surfactant tetradecyldimethylaminoxide (C14DMAO) and the polyelectrolytes polyacrylic (PAA-205 and PAA-250) or polymethacrylic (PMA-100) acids have been investigated in aqueous solution. The physico-chemical properties of these systems have been monitored by measuring the solution pH, electric birefringence, zero-shear viscosity and density for increasing surfactant concentrations. Polymer-coated liposomes, particularly poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-substituted liposomes, have emerged as long-circulating carrier systems for drug delivery and diagnostic purposes. A rapid synthesis of three different types of multifunctional lipids with structurally diverse hydrophilic, polyether-based architectures via one- or two-pot approaches is described.
