Synthesis, characterization and solid-state photoluminescence studies of six alkoxy phenylene ethynylene dinuclear palladium(II) rods

2015

A rare family of six discrete binuclear [PdCl(PEt3)2] phenylene ethynylene rods with alkoxy side chains (methoxy, ethoxy and heptoxy) have been developed, and their solid-state photoluminescence results have been presented and discussed. The shorter bridging ligands are of the general formula H–CuC– C6H2(R)2–CuC–H, where R = H, OCH3, OC 2H5, and OC7H15, whereas the longer ones are based on H– CuC–C6H4–CuC–C6H2(R)2–CuC–C6H4–CuC–H, where R = OCH3, OC 2H5. These ligands display increasing length in both the main dimension (backbone length) as well as the number of carbons in the side chains (R, alkoxide side chain) that stem from the central phenylene moiety. The X-ray crystal structures of tw…

Toward Photopatternable Thin Film Optical Sensors Utilizing Reactive Polyphenylacetylenes

2013

Substituted polyphenylacetylenes featuring reactive pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester moieties are synthesized. Parts of the reactive PFP groups are then converted with a mono ortho-nitrobenzyl-protected diamine in variable ratios. Thin films are prepared from these copolymers and irradiated with UV light (λ = 365 nm), resulting in crosslinking of the irradiated areas and hence enabling a photopatterning. We found that during the photocrosslinking process, the excess of PFP ester moieties is stable and remained intact, enabling a subsequent post-polymerization modification step with amines. Noteworthy, this subsequent modification with amines results in a dramatically shift in the UV-vis absorp…

Localized Liquid Secretion from a Photopatterned Liquid-Crystal Polymer Skin

2020

Liquid-releasing artificial skins are made from films made of a smectic liquid-crystal polymer network (LCN) photopolymerized in the presence of a photoactive azobenzene chromophore and a liquid-crystal porogen. The nonreactive porogen phase separates during the polymerization process, and the polymer forms a spongy polymer network filled with liquid. The liquid is excreted from the film when exposed to UV light upon conversion of trans-azobenzene to its cis isomer. Here, localized liquid secretion at preset positions at the polymer film is described. The design principle is based on creating a hybrid molecular architecture with both smectic and nonordered isotropic alignments in a continuo…

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction in gas–solid regime in the presence of H2O by using GaP/TiO2 composite as photocatalyst under simulated solar light

2014

GaP/TiO2 composites exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction in the presence of water vapor producing methane. By decreasing the GaP:TiO2 mass ratio an increase in the photocatalytic activity of the composite was observed for up to a 1:10 mass ratio. The photocatalytic activity of the composite can be attributed to the band structures of the solids as well as to the efficient charge transfer between GaP and TiO2 heterojunction.

Synthesis of phenothiazine-based di-anchoring dyes containing fluorene linker and their photovoltaic performance

2015

Abstract A new di-anchoring organic dye based on phenothiazine featuring A-D-π-D-A (acceptor-donor-π-linker-donor-acceptor) configuration with fluorene as the π linker was designed and successfully synthesized. Compared to the corresponding mono-anchoring D-A congener, this new dye exhibited a broader and stronger absorption in the light wavelength ranging from 400 nm to 600 nm and thus showed a more efficient photovoltaic performance for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The overall power conversion efficiency (η) of this new dye in a sensitized solar cell amounted to 5.70%, which is 17% higher than that of the equivalent based counterpart (4.87%). On the other hand, the introduction of …

Metal-free organic dyes with di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole as a donor for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells: Effect of mono- and bi-anch…

2019

Abstract Four novel metal-free organic dyes WL1a-b and WL2a-b containing di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole (DBTP) as electron donor were synthesized and applied for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where DBTP was firstly employed as a donor in the organic dyes. It has been demonstrated that the dyes WL with DBTP as a donor show better photovoltaic performance than the reference dye PTZ with phenothiazine as a donor. In comparison with WL1a-b with one cyanoacrylic acid as mono-anchor, WL2a-b with two cyanoacrylic acids as bi-anchors show a broader light absorption on the TiO2 film and higher molar extinction coefficients in solution, resulting in higher power conversion efficiency. …

Highly soluble multifunctional MnO nanoparticles for simultaneous optical and MRI imaging and cancer treatment using photodynamic therapy

2010

Superparamagnetic MnO nanoparticles were functionalized using a hydrophilic ligand containing protoporphyrin IX as photosensitizer. By virtue of their magnetic properties these nanoparticles may serve as contrast enhancing agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while the fluorescent target ligand protoporphyrin IX allows simultaneous tumor detection and treatment by photodynamic therapy (PDT). Caki-1 cells were incubated with these nanoparticles. Subsequent exposure to UV light lead to cell apoptosis due to photoactivation of the photosensitizer conjugated to the nanoparticles. This method offers great diagnostic potential for highly proliferative tissues, including tumors. In additio…

Efficient and Long-Living Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

2010

Three new heteroleptic iridium complexes that combine two approaches, one leading to a high stability and the other yielding a high luminescence efficiency, are presented. All complexes contain a phenyl group at the 6-position of the neutral bpy ligand, which holds an additional, increasingly bulky substituent on the 4-position. The phenyl group allows for intramolecular π–π stacking, which renders the complex more stable and yields long-living light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The additional substituent increases the intersite distance between the cations in the film, reducing the quenching of the excitons, and should improve the efficiency of the LECs. Density functional theory…

Phosphine oxide functionalized pyrenes as efficient blue light emitting multifunctional materials for organic light emitting diodes

2015

In a search for blue light emitting multifunctional materials, the electron transport enhancing diphenyl phosphine–oxide (Ph2PO) group has been appended to blue light emitting pyrene derivatives. This design, we observe, leads to highly efficient electron transporting blue-emitters for non-doped organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) with good film formation characteristics. The superior performance is attributed to enhanced charge transport and formation of pyrene excimers assisted by thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in the device. We report the synthesis and characterization using experimental and computational methods of six such pyrene derivatives. Although three of these…
