Simulation of IQE tuning of individual cells for DC-balancing multijunction tandem cells
2016
In the present work, the performance of stacks of cells connected in series is examined at different levels of internal quantum efficiency (IQE). Incident photons, generated by employing the ASTM G173-03 data set, are accounted for individually as they interact with the stack of cells. The efficiencies of the devices studied are dependent upon the DC balance throughout the stack of cells. It is demonstrated that reducing the internal quantum efficiency of upper cells can lead to a better DC balance and thereby higher efficiency.
Simulations of the effect of the contact energy levels on a simple model of a hot carrier cell
2016
In the present work, the performance of a simplified model of a hot carrier cell is examined at different energy levels of carrier collection. Incident photons, Monte Carlo generated by employing the ASTM G173-03 data set, are accounted for individually as they interact with the cell. It is assumed that the carriers can be collected ultra-fast, thus avoiding considering hot carrier thermalisation effects. Although the model is preliminary and lacking some mechanisms of hot carrier cells, it has been demonstrated that the present approach to modelling hot carrier solar cells can be developed into fully working models. Some effects of the absorption energy levels in the valence band have been…
Comment on “Thresholded Quantum LIDAR: Exploiting Photon-Number-Resolving Detection”

International audience; The ratio of the SNR with thresholding and with proportional detection for one photon of mean background noise, for a threshold value N from 1 to 4.
Effective characterization of the phase and intensity profiles of asymmetrically distorted light pulses in optical fiber systems
2009
International audience; We address the problem of characterization of light pulses that propagate in long-haul high-bit-rate optical communication systems under strongly perturbed conditions. We show that the conventional technique for characterization of the phase and intensity profile of such pulses becomes qualitatively inconsistent when the pulse's profile is asymmetrically distorted with respect to its center of mass. We resolve these inconsistencies by partially reformulating the conventional technique by means of appropriate pulse parameters, which we call upgraded parameters, that allow a fair characterization of the intensity and phase of all types of light pulses, including those …
Active components for integrated plasmonic circuits
2009
International audience; We present a comprehensive study of highly efficient and compact passive and active components for integrated plasmonic circuit based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides.
Two-Photon Absorption Properties and Structures of BODIPY and Its Dyad, Triad and Tetrad.
2018
A series consisting of a dyad, a triad and a tetrad containing either two, three and four BODIPY units, respectively, has been synthesized and fully characterized and compared to two mono-BODIPY analogs (used as references). The one- and two-photon photophysical properties have been measured and the X-ray structures of four of the BODIPY derivatives have been determined. In the 700-900 nm range, the two-photon absorption (TPA) cross sections range from 30 GM to 160 GM for these compounds.
Two-photon absorption of BF2-carrying compounds: insights from theory and experiment
2017
This communication presents a structure–property study of a few novel pyridine-based difluoroborate compounds with a N–BF2–O core, which exhibit outstanding fluorescence properties. To exploit their potential for two-photon bioimaging, relationships between the two-photon action cross section and systematic structural modifications have been investigated and unravelled.
Observation of classically 'forbidden' electromagnetic wave propagation and implications for neutrino detection.
2018
Ongoing experimental efforts in Antarctica seek to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos by measurement of radio-frequency (RF) Askaryan radiation generated by the collision of a neutrino with an ice molecule. An array of RF antennas, deployed either in-ice or in-air, is used to infer the properties of the neutrino. To evaluate their experimental sensitivity, such experiments require a refractive index model for ray tracing radio-wave trajectories from a putative in-ice neutrino interaction point to the receiving antennas; this gives the degree of signal absorption or ray bending from source to receiver. The gradient in the density profile over the upper 200 meters of Antarctic ice, coupled wi…
First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. I. the Shadow of the Supermassive Black Hole
2019
When surrounded by a transparent emission region, black holes are expected to reveal a dark shadow caused by gravitational light bending and photon capture at the event horizon. To image and study this phenomenon, we have assembled the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometry array observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. This allows us to reconstruct event-horizon-scale images of the supermassive black hole candidate in the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87. We have resolved the central compact radio source as an asymmetric bright emission ring with a diameter of 42 ± 3 μas, which is circular and encompasses a central depression in brightness with a flux rati…
