Batsch.), is native to arid regions of central Asia and may possess traits valuable for improving drought tolerance of commercial peach varieties. Novel sandwich-type phthalocyanines containing a rare earth metal core (Pr, Nd, Eu-Lu) and macrocycles peripherally substituted by pentadecylphenoxy groups were synthesized using a cardanol-based phthalonitrile precursor and the respective lanthanide acetate. Additionally, the metal free-base analog compound was studied for comparison. The purified reaction products were all found to be thick and viscous substances at room temperature, showing liquid crystalline behavior with a distinct increase in fluidity at ca. 40 ° C. The morpho-functional patterns of photosynthesis, measured as 14C-fixation and chl fluorescence of PSII, also as affected by different doses of UV radiation in the laboratory were examined in the South Pacific kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory of the coast of Valdivia, Chile (40°S). The results indicated the existence of longitudinal thallus profiles in physiological performance. In general, blades exhibited higher rates of carbon fixation and pigmentation as compared with stipes and holdfasts. Abstract At the beginning of our century few scientists paid attention to the phenomenon of inactivation of photosynthesis by high light intensities which was later called photoinhibition. In the period 1925–1950, the idea was established that photoinhibition is a reversible inactivation, determined by light intensity and exposure time, followed by irreversible damage of the photosynthetic apparatus. However, the absence of a uniform terminology demonstrates that photoinhibition was not completely perceived and understood. In 1956, B. Kok gave the first definition of photoinhibition as a photochemical inactivation of pigment complexes.
