Feeding habits, post-embryonic and adult survival, mating, virility and fecundity of the predacious miteAmblyseius swirskii [Acarina: Phytoseiidae] o…
1977
The nutritional value forAmblyseius swirskiiAthias-Henriot, of eggs or crawlers ofCoccus hesperidum L.,Saissetia oleae (Olivier),S. coffeae (Walker),Pseudococcus citriculusGreen, andP. longispinusTarg.-Tozz, even with the addition of honeydew, was low; only a few young reached adulthood and the oviposition rate was negligible. However, addition of honeydew toTetranychus cinnabarinusBoisd. enhanced the oviposition rate ofAmblyseius swirskii. Honeydew was a favourite food forA. swirskii, whereas the eggs and crawlers tested were not eagerly attacked and consumed. Females and males fed honeydew ofSaissetia oleae mated readily and the females were inseminated, but fecundity was negligible.
Biological and life table parameters of Typhlodromus laurentii and Iphiseius degenerans (Acari, Phytoseiidae) fed on Panonychus citri and pollen of O…
2015
Typhlodromus laurentii and Iphiseius degenerans are two generalist phytoseiid mites, broadly spread in the Mediterranean area, especially in citrus orchards. In the present work we report results on various biological and life table parameters of the two phytoseiids, fed on pollen of Oxalis pes-caprae and various stages of the tetranychid Panonychus citri. Iphiseius degenerans had the shortest post embryonic development (6.53 days), the highest oviposition rate (1.83 eggs/female/day) and the shortest mean time between eggs laid (0.55 day) on Oxalis pollen, whereas the two food types did not influence these parameters in T. laurentii. However, Oxalis pollen showed a positive effect on the su…
Tracking paternal genes with DALP markers in a pseudoarrhenotokous reproductive system: biparental transmission but haplodiploid-like inheritance in …
2000
International audience; The complexity of some sexual reproductive systems in arthropods still leaves both their genetic and epigenetic determinism and their evolutionary significance poorly understood. Pseudoarrhenotoky is characterized by obligate fertilization and differential inactivation and/or elimination of paternal chromosomes in embryos that develop into males. Here, we investigate how the paternal genome is transmitted in a pseudoarrhenotokous mite, Neoseiulus californicus, using codominant genetic markers detected by DALP (direct amplification of length polymorphism). Transmission patterns of parental alleles through one and two generations are reported at four or five loci corre…
Mites of the genus Typhlodromus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) from Southern France: combined morphological and molecular approaches for species identification
2019
Mites of the family Phytoseiidae are important predators for biological control applications. They occur naturally in ecosystems but their overall distribution is not completely known. This study presents results of surveys carried out in the south of France. It proposes the use of a combination of morphological and molecular approaches for species diagnosis. Eighteen species of the genus Typhlodromus are reported from southern France, of which nine belong to Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) and nine to Typhlodromus (Typhlodromus). Eight of these species are new to the French fauna. The mitochondrial DNA CytB gene from 85 specimens (18 species) and the 12S rRNA gene from 30 specimens (9 species) w…
PHYTOSEIIDAE (ACARI: PARASITIFORMES) OF SICILY (ITALY): SPECIES DIVERSITY AFTER HALF A CENTURY OF SURVEYS
2020
Population dynamics and specific composition of phytoseiid mites (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae) associated with lemon trees in three differently mana…
2006
Surveys of phytoseiid mites were carried out in three lemon orchards in Sicily. The three orchards had different farm management and different environmental conditions: A) traditionally farm managed; B) organic farm managed; C) in state of neglect. The aim was to determine the specific composition of the above different types of orchards and to compare their population dynamics in order to obtain information on the influence of the different agricultural practices on the phytoseiid fauna. After two years of weekly samplings it can be assessed that no substancial differences were found in the phytoseiid specific composition among the three types of orchards. On the other hand, differences, s…
LA SISTEMATICA DEI PHYTOSEIIDAE: CENNI STORICI, SITUAZIONE ATTUALE E PROSPETTIVE DI SVILUPPO
2016

Status of two cryptic species, Typhlodromus exhilaratus Ragusa and Typhlodromus phialatus Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae): consequences for taxo…
2006
Typhlodromus phialatus and T. exhilaratus are morphologically close species. Their differentiation is based on the shape of the insemination apparatus and on idiosomal setae length. However, the setae length values are often intermediate between these two species and do not allow accurate identification. Furthermore, the handful of differences in insemination apparatus shape are also questionable as a means of differentiation. Synonymy between these species has thus been questioned. Three experiments were carried out. Idiosomal seta length measurements, molecular tests and cross experiments were conducted for three populations, identified as T. exhilaratus and T. phialatus according to the …
