Positive solutions for the Neumann p-Laplacian

2017

We examine parametric nonlinear Neumann problems driven by the p-Laplacian with asymptotically ( $$p-1$$ )-linear reaction term f(z, x) (as $$x\rightarrow +\infty $$ ). We determine the existence, nonexistence and minimality of positive solutions as the parameter $$\lambda >0$$ varies.

Perturbed eigenvalue problems for the Robin p-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential

2020

AbstractWe consider a parametric nonlinear Robin problem driven by the negativep-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The equation can be thought as a perturbation of the usual eigenvalue problem. We consider the case where the perturbation$$f(z,\cdot )$$f(z,·)is$$(p-1)$$(p-1)-sublinear and then the case where it is$$(p-1)$$(p-1)-superlinear but without satisfying the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. We establish existence and uniqueness or multiplicity of positive solutions for certain admissible range for the parameter$$\lambda \in {\mathbb {R}}$$λ∈Rwhich we specify exactly in terms of principal eigenvalue of the differential operator.

AbstractLight absorption can trigger biologically relevant protein conformational changes. The light-induced structural rearrangement at the level of a photoexcited chromophore is known to occur in the femtosecond timescale and is expected to propagate through the protein as a quake-like intramolecular motion. Here we report direct experimental evidence of such ‘proteinquake’ observed in myoglobin through femtosecond X-ray solution scattering measurements performed at the Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray free-electron laser. An ultrafast increase of myoglobin radius of gyration occurs within 1 picosecond and is followed by a delayed protein expansion. As the system approaches equilibrium i…

AbstractEctopic impaction of the mandibular third molar in the condylar region is an extremely rare condition. This report describes a case of an impacted tooth in the sub-condylar region in a woman with hemifacial discomfort and recurrent swelling. A description of the surgical management of this pathology is given as well as a literatura review.

Simultaneous occurrence of covert infections with small RNA viruses in the lepidopteran Spodoptera exigua

2014

Viral covert infections in invertebrates have been traditionally attributed to sublethal infections that were not able to establish an acute infection. Recent studies are revealing that, although true for some viruses, other viruses may follow the strategy of establishing covert or persistent infections without producing the death of the host. Recently, and due to the revolution in the sequencing technologies, a large number of viruses causing covert infections in all type of hosts have been identified. The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a worldwide pest that causes significant losses to agricultural and ornamental plant industries. In a previous project we used…

Poisoning histories in the Italian renaissance: The case of Pico Della Mirandola and Angelo Poliziano.

2018

Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Angelo Poliziano were two of the most important humanists of the Italian Renaissance. They died suddenly in 1494 and their deaths have been for centuries a subject of debate. The exhumation of their remains offered the opportunity to study the cause of their death through a multidisciplinary research project. Anthropological analyses, together with documentary evidences, radiocarbon dating and ancient DNA analysis supported the identification of the remains attributed to Pico. Macroscopic examination did not reveal paleopathological lesions or signs related to syphilis. Heavy metals analysis, carried out on bones and mummified tissues, showed that in Pico's…

Nonlinear refraction and absorption of spectrally tuneable picosecond pulses in carbon disulfide

2021

Abstract We analyze the spectral dependence of the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of carbon disulfide (CS2) in the spectral range of 400–1100 nm using picosecond laser pulses. An increase of the nonlinear refractive index of CS2 at the shorter wavelength region compared with the near infrared region (9 × 10−14 cm2 W−1 (λ = 700 nm) and 4 × 10−14 cm2 W−1 (λ = 1000 nm), respectively) follows by a decrease of this parameter at the wavelengths below 600 nm. We compare the spectral dependences of the lower- and higher-order nonlinear absorption coefficients in carbon disulfide. The three-photon absorption coefficient was found to be maximal at λ = 1000 nm (β3PA = …

Copper(II)-dipicolinate-mediated clickable azide–alkyne cycloaddition in water as solvent

2018

Copper(II)-dipicolinate complex [CuIIL(H2O)2] (1) (H2L = dipicolinic acid (H2dipic)) was synthesized via oxidation of copper(I) iodide and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid in water and acetonitrile in the presence of glycine. Complex 1 was characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis and its structure confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. This complex is an efficient precatalyst that mediates azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions in water at room temperature either in the absence or presence of a reducing agent. Compound 1-mediated azide-alkyne cycloaddition affords alkyl/aryl substituted 1,2,3-triazole heterocycles in a regioselective manner and excellent yields under very mild reactio…
