This paper investigates how depictive gestures, i.e., hand movements that depict actions, scenes or objects, are configured and used for accomplishing instructions. By drawing on video recordings of second language interactions in cooking classes for newcomers in Finland, we focus on instructions that project a certain type of complying bodily action as the relevant next action. We demonstrate that the instructions are designed to be sensitive not only to the contingencies of the material ecology of the kitchen but also to the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries between the participants. Quel rapport émotionnel un individu entretient-il avec son habitat ? Un jeu de simulation de négociation entre les différents critères d’évaluation de l’environnement résidentiel permet de recueillir un corpus de données. Son analyse implique une réflexion sur la formalisation des résultats obtenus. Deux options sont confrontées : une représentation en graphe polaire et une image composée de pictogrammes symbolisant les multiples dimensions de l’espace résidentiel qui peuvent motiver les choix d’installation. Cette dernière image permet une appréhension plus simple du lien entre les structures spatiales, cognitives et sociales.

This paper presents an information fusion method for image retrieval; the retrieval strategy is based on statistical and geometrical features extracted from sub-images. Our goal is to find a set of best similar images related to a prototype image; this goal may be obtained according to image content rather than symbolic attributes. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) images and astronomical images have been adopted to test the method. It may include ghosts and monsters, nightmares and existential fears, or, violence and content labelled as “difficult”. A phenomenological view of pictures in teaching and a novel method for analysing them

In this paper a novel method for analysing the content and teaching potential of pictures is presented. It is the four-field method, which is based on phenomenological thoughts about human experience, which combines factual knowledge with emotions and personal and social meanings. A biological example is given. Around this idea a course unit for using pictures in science teaching was organized. It was used in the training of both primary and secondary level teachers. From picture analysis the course unit proceeds to planning the use of pictures in teaching. A classification of the teaching functions of pictures is presented.
