Discovering hidden brain network responses to naturalistic stimuli via tensor component analysis of multi-subject fMRI data

2021

The study of brain network interactions during naturalistic stimuli facilitates a deeper understanding of human brain function. To estimate large-scale brain networks evoked with naturalistic stimuli, a tensor component analysis (TCA) based framework was used to characterize shared spatio-temporal patterns across subjects in a purely data-driven manner. In this framework, a third-order tensor is constructed from the timeseries extracted from all brain regions from a given parcellation, for all participants, with modes of the tensor corresponding to spatial distribution, time series and participants. TCA then reveals spatially and temporally shared components, i.e., evoked networks with the …

The importance of strategic leadership in cyber security : Case of Finland

2019

Cyber security has become one of the biggest priorities for businesses and governments. Streamlining and strengthening strategic leadership are key aspects in making sure the cyber security vision is achieved. The strategic leadership of cyber security implies identifying and setting goals based on the protection of the digital operating environment. Furthermore, it implies coordinating actions and preparedness as well as managing extensive disruptions. The aim of this paper is to define what is strategic leadership of cyber security and how it is implemented as part of the comprehensive security model in Finland. The paper also asks (and answers) how the strategic leadership of cyber secur…

The picture superiority effect in associative memory: A developmental study.

2018

We tested whether semantic relatedness between to-be-remembered items and item presentation format (pictorial vs. verbal) affects associative recall. Fifty-nine children (11-13 years old) and forty young adults (age 18-30) completed a learning and recall task for semantically related (e.g., padlock-key) and unrelated (e.g., lemon-piano) picture-picture, word-picture, and word-word pairs. The data revealed memory advantage for semantically related item pairs, and for pictures compared to words. A picture superiority effect was found exclusively for pure picture pairs. Despite pronounced differences in memory accuracy, the effect of semantic relatedness and the picture superiority effect were…

Analysis of thiamine transporter genes in sporadic beriberi

2014

Abstract Objective Thiamine or vitamin B 1 deficiency diminishes thiamine-dependent enzymatic activity, alters mitochondrial function, impairs oxidative metabolism, and causes selective neuronal death. We analyzed for the first time, the role of all known mutations within three specific thiamine carrier genes, SLC19 A2, SLC19 A3 , and SLC25 A19 , in a patient with atrophic beriberi, a multiorgan nutritional disease caused by thiamine deficiency. Methods A 44-year-old male alcoholic patient from Morocco developed massive bilateral leg edema, a subacute sensorimotor neuropathy, and incontinence. Despite normal vitamin B 1 serum levels, his clinical picture was rapidly reverted by high-dose in…

Methods: A 44-year-old male alcoholic patient from Morocco developed massive bilateral leg edema a subacute sensorimotor neuropathy and incontinence. Despite normal vitamin B1 serum levels his clinical picture was rapidly reverted by high-dose intramuscular thiamine treatment suggesting a possible genetic resistance. We used polymerase chain reaction followed by amplicon sequencing to study all the known thiamine-related gene mutations identified within the Human Gene Mutation Database. Results: Thirty-seven mutations were tested: 29 in SLC19 A2 6 in SLC19 A3 and 2 in SLC25 A19. Mutational analyses showed a wild-type genotype for all sequences investigated. Conclusion: This is the first genetic study in beriberi disease. We did not detect any known mutation in any of the three genes in a sporadic dry beriberi patient. We cannot exclude a role for other known or unknown mutations in the same genes or in other thiamine-associated genes in the occurrence of this nutritional neuropathy.HumansThiamineGenePolymerase chain reactionGeneticsMutationNutrition and DieteticsbiologyMembrane Transport ProteinsThiamine Deficiencymedicine.diseaseAlcoholismEndocrinologyMutationbiology.proteinThiamineMutations

Patient Safety Through the Analysis of «Grey’s Anatomy»; Season 6, Episode 6. I Saw What I Saw

2016

Patient safety constitutes a public health problem due to the repercussions that has in the care process and in the patients. The viewing of Grey’s Anatomy Episode “I saw what I saw” allows to value the importance of searching for the causes of an error and, at the same time, allows to detect commonplace situations (stress, organization, personal and ambient factors) that increase the possibility of errors in class. The process enables students to realize the importance not only of personal aspects, but of multiple possible causes of errors and the importance of health planning.

Population and Query Interface for a Content-Based Video Database

2002

In this paper we describe the first full implementation of a content-based indexing and retrieval system for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 videos. We consider a video as a collection of spatiotemporal segments called video objects; each video object is a sequence of video object planes. A set of representative video object planes is used to index each video object. During the database population, the operator, using a semi-automatic outlining tool we developed, manually selects video objects and insert some semantical information. Low-level visual features like color, texture, motion and geometry are automatically computed. The system has been implemented on a commercial relational DBMS and is based on…

“Facts Are Grasped by Us in Pictures (PT, 2.1). Remarks on Pictures and Facts in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus

2023

This paper proposes a (re)reading of the famous section in the Tractatus Logico-philosophicus, 2.1: “We picture facts to ourselves” and its relation to the similar section in the Prototractatus, 2.1: “Facts are grasped by us in images”. We reject the dominant solution that interprets the relation between facts and images as an isomorphic relation and propose that instead it is an internal relation: there are no facts that are not perceived through images. In other words: For us, linguistic animals, there is no world independent of language.

The effects of age and emotional valence on recognition memory: An ex-Gaussian components analysis

2014

[EN] The aim of this work was to study the effects of valence and age on visual image recognition memory. The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) battery was used, and response time data were analyzed using analysis of variance, as well as an ex-Gaussian fit method. Older participants were slower and more variable in their reaction times. Response times were longer for negative valence pictures, however this was statistically significant only for young participants. This suggests that negative emotional valence has a strong effect on recognition memory in young but not in old participants. The tau parameter, often related to attention in the literature, was smaller for young than …
