Front Cover: Electrochemical Synthesis of Fluorinated Orthoesters from 1,3‐Benzodioxoles (ChemistryOpen 9/2019)

2019

The Front Cover shows the robustness achieved by the installation of fluorinated alcohols on 1,3‐benzodioxoles, which appears like the shield of a knight protecting the obtained orthoesters against acids and bases. The simple protocol allows access to interesting compounds, whose lipophilicity is tremendously increased by the incorporation of fluorinated groups. This makes it possible to adjust the physicochemical properties of the biologically active 1,3‐benzodioxole motif. The surprisingly high stability against acids and bases gives rise to subsequent functionalizations or direct application in medicinal or agrochemistry. More information can be found in the Communication by J. L. Röckl …

The damped harmonic oscillator in deformation quantization

2005

We propose a new approach to the quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator in the framework of deformation quantization. The quantization is performed in the Schr\"{o}dinger picture by a star-product induced by a modified "Poisson bracket". We determine the eigenstates in the damped regime and compute the transition probability between states of the undamped harmonic oscillator after the system was submitted to dissipation.

A metabolism of Adam and Eve: Damien Hirst meets Edvard Munch

2016

Sari Kuuva, University of Jyvaskyla Sari Kuuva, PhD (in cognitive science, 2007 and art history, 2010) is a post-doctoral researcher who works at the Department of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Jyvaskyla. She has studied the relationship between art, aesthetics and psychology, particularly the concept of the symbol and the problematics of experiencing and creating visual art. Among Kuuva’s main publications relating to the art of Edvard Munch are: Symbol, Munch and Creativity: Metabolism of Visual Symbols (University of Jyvaskyla 2010); ‘Emotional creativity in art: case scream’ in Mind and Matter: Selected Papers of Nordic 2009 Conference for Art Historians (Helsinki, Socie…

Challenging Old and New Images Representing the Cambodian Genocide: The Missing Picture (Rithy Panh, 2013)

2018

This article focuses on the images used over four decades to represent the Cambodian genocide in photography, cinema, visual arts and the media as the basis for analyzing the documentary-memoir directed by Rithy Panh, The Missing Picture. First, there is a paucity of images which depict, evoke or allude to the crimes perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979); second, scholars raise objections about whether any image can adequately depict a catastrophic event such as genocide. This article begins by categorizing the Cambodian genocide iconography according to the modality of the visual production. After briefly classifying this visual output in four categories (perpetrator images, liberator…

Cinema audiences reproducibly vary the chemical composition of air during films, by broadcasting scene specific emissions on breath

2016

AbstractHuman beings continuously emit chemicals into the air by breath and through the skin. In order to determine whether these emissions vary predictably in response to audiovisual stimuli, we have continuously monitored carbon dioxide and over one hundred volatile organic compounds in a cinema. It was found that many airborne chemicals in cinema air varied distinctively and reproducibly with time for a particular film, even in different screenings to different audiences. Application of scene labels and advanced data mining methods revealed that specific film events, namely “suspense” or “comedy” caused audiences to change their emission of specific chemicals. These event-type synchronou…

Modélisation d'images agronomiques - application a la reconnaissance d'adventices par imagerie pour une pulvérisation localisée

2009

Plant (crop and weed) identification is a very active field of research in agriculture since the reinforcement of European laws about pesticide applications for a site-specific management of spraying practices. A new crop/weed simulation model was developed to allow the evaluation of crop/weed spatial identification methods from imaging. Considering multiples agronomic parameters – crop location, weed infestation rate, weed spatial distribution – the first step of this model allows the simulation of an infested crop field. Then, in a second step, a world to camera transformation is applied to allow every kind of picture (with or without perspective effect). The validation of this model was …

Implications of Theories of Language for Information Systems

1985

This article demonstrates how language views can be adopted into an information systems context. We distinguish here between five language views: denotational, generative, cognitive, behavioristic, and interactionist. These views differ in their assumptions about he origin of linguistic behavior, the primary functions of language, elements of language, and the nature of linguistic knowledge. Information system development approaches can be characterized by their underlying language views. This explains great differences in development methods and research. Thus, language views have implications and should be chosen continency for a given information system context.

Causal brain-heart information transfer during visual emotional elicitation in healthy subjects: Preliminary evaluations and future perspectives

2017

Complex heartbeat dynamics is known to reflect subject's emotional state, thanks to numerous links to brain cortical and subcortical regions. Likewise, specific brain regions are deeply involved in vagally-mediated emotional processing and regulation. Nevertheless, although the brain-heart interplay has been studied during visual emotion elicitation, directional interactions have not been investigated so far. To fill this gap, in this study we investigate brain-heart dynamics during emotional elicitation in healthy subjects through measures of Granger causality (GC) between the two physiological systems. Data were gathered from 22 healthy volunteers who underwent pleasant/ unpleasant affect…

From common operational picture to common situational understanding: An analysis based on practitioner perspectives

2021

Abstract The concepts of Situational Awareness (SA) and Common Operational Picture (COP) are closely related and well-acknowledged to be crucial factors for effective emergency management. In multi-agency operations, such as extreme weather events, the involved first responders manage the event with different mandates, objectives, and tools which can make it challenging to build a COP. Effective collaboration requires a common situational understanding, based on knowledge about each other’s responsibilities and tasks, mutual respect and trust, as well as common communication tools for emergency communication and information sharing. This paper argues that the COP serves as a basis for decid…

Einführung von Diskursreferenten im Bilderbuch

2011

By analyzing 20 picture books that include both a textual narrative and pictures, three types of referent introduction were identified: introduction of referents by use of an indefinite noun phrase; introduction of referents by use of a definite noun phrase or a proper name; introduction of referents by use of a deictic construction. This shows that children are confronted with different strategies of referent introduction from early on. It is argued that the results of studies on the acquisition of the system of reference introduction could possibly be interpreted differently if one takes into account how the experience with literary texts influences children’s own narratives.
