Impact of Fruit Beverage Consumption on the Antioxidant Status in Healthy Women

2008

Background: Epidemiologic studies suggest that antioxidant-rich foods might reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Aim: To test the health-protective potential of three fruit beverages, Fb (grape-orange-apricot), FbM (Fb with skimmed milk) and FbMFe [FbM + Fe(II)], in healthy women. Methods: The influence of fruit beverage consumption (500 ml/day) upon serum antioxidant capacity determined by ORAC and TEAC methods and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was assessed in 32 healthy female volunteers. In the intervention study, each subject received the fruit beverages during three periods (3 weeks for Fb and …

Biliary sludge and gallstones in pregnancy: Incidence, risk factors, and natural history

1993

To evaluate the incidence and symptoms of and risk factors for biliary sludge and gallstones during pregnancy and to assess the natural history of these conditions in the first year after delivery.Cohort study.A total of 272 pregnant women recruited in the first trimester.Biliary sludge and gallstones were diagnosed using ultrasonography, both during pregnancy and after delivery. Predictors of the presence or disappearance of sludge and stones were examined.Overall, from the first trimester of pregnancy until the immediate postpartum period, 67 women were newly diagnosed with biliary sludge, and 6 women were newly diagnosed with gallstones. The respective incidence rates were 31% (95% Cl, 2…

Epidermal growth factor receptor in human breast cancer: Correlation with cytosolic and nuclear ER receptors and with biological and histological tum…

1990

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) and cytosolic (cER) and nuclear (nER) estradiol receptors were quantified in 220 primary breast cancers. The EGFr was significantly more frequent (chi 2 = 5.9; P less than 0.025) and its concentration was significantly higher (P less than 0.001) among ER- tumors than in ER+ tumors. There was a significantly greater proportion (chi 2 = 6.4; P less than 0.05) of node involvement in EGFr+/ER+ tumors than in EFGr-/ER+. Increases in the proportion of EGFr+ in ER- tumors are parallel to Scarff-Bloom scores (chi 2 = 6.1; P less than 0.05) and there is a significant trend (Spearman rs = 0.25; P less than 0.05) towards increased EGFr concentrations with histol…

Features of Cytomegalovirus DNAemia Blips in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients: Implications for Optimization of Preemptive An…

2019

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia occurs frequently in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-HSCT). There is limited information about the incidence, features, and clinical impact of CMV DNAemia blips (episodes defined by an isolated positive PCR result) in this setting. In this retrospective study, 225 consecutive adult patients undergoing any modality of allo-HSCT at our center between May 2012 and July 2019 were included. Plasma CMV DNA load was monitored using a highly sensitive real-time PCR assay. In all, 187 of 225 patients had CMV DNAemia through day 365 after allo-HSCT (total number of episodes, n = 379). Eighty-three of the 187 patients had 1 or more blips (n …

Low back pain and other overuse injuries in a group of Japanese triathletes.

1996

OBJECTIVE: To document the incidence of low back pain and other overuse injuries in a group of triathletes, and to investigate any associations with various physical and triathlon related factors. METHODS: By means of a questionnaire, the physical characteristics, training habits, and the incidences of overuse injuries of 92 Japanese triathletes (70 males, 22 females) were documented. Student's t and chi 2 tests were used to determine the significance of any associations with injury incidence, as well as differences between subjects experiencing or not experiencing low back pain in the previous year. RESULTS: Low back pain was experienced by 32% of subjects in the previous year. The majorit…

Prevalence of human papillomavirus types in women screened by cytology in Germany.

2007

Incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer are higher in Germany than in other Western European countries. Type-specific human papillomavirus (HPV) distribution was investigated for the first time in Germany in an epidemiological study including 8,101 women. Women above the age of 30 years, self-referring for cervical cancer screening, were enrolled in two study centers in Hannover (Northern Germany) and Tubingen (Southern Germany). Participants were screened by the Pap smear and the hybrid capture 2 (HC2) test using the high-risk probe. All samples that were positive by the HC2 test were genotyped using the prototype PGMY09/11 PCR line blot assay. Most women in the study population h…

Clinical, therapeutic and prognostic features of osteosarcoma of the jaws - experience of 36 cases.

2012

Abstract Introduction Osteosarcoma of the jaws (OSJ) differs from osteosarcoma of other skeletal regions due to later development, a high mortality associated with the local disease, fewer incidences of metastases and its extreme rarity. In regard to clinical and pathological parameters as well as therapeutic approaches and prognosis, OSJ has not been specifically examined to date. In order to achieve a better understanding of this special malignancy, an evaluation of incidence, treatment and prognosis of patients with OSJ in our department over the past 38 years was conducted. Materials and methods A retrospective analysis of patients with OSJ between 1972 and 2010 was performed. Informati…

About invasive cervical cancer: a French population based study between 1998 and 2010

2015

Abstract Objectives The new French cancer plan provides the implementation of organized screening. To make an assessment of the situation, we aim to describe clinical, tumor and survival characteristics of patients with invasive cervical cancer. Study design Data on women suffering from invasive cervical cancer and diagnosed from 1998 to 2010 were provided by the Cote d’Or breast cancer registry. Survival was described using the Kaplan–Meier method and prognostic factors of survival were estimated in a Cox proportional hazard model. Results On the whole, 1019 cancers have been collected including 311 (30.5%) invasive ones. The peak incidence was between 40 and 49 years, with an average age …

Experts' assessment of probability and level of pesticide exposure in agricultural workers.

2000

The occupational history of the parents of 261 infants with congenital malformations and 261 matched controls was collected. During the relevant time period before the birth of their child, 183 parents were involved in agricultural activities, 49% of them having directly applied pesticides. Two experts assessed the probability and the level of exposure to each quoted pesticide (582 observations) by using 4-point scales. Interrater agreement was estimated. Kappa-weighted values for probability and level of exposure were, respectively, kappa = 0.36 and kappa = 0.39. In the analysis of some categories of exposure (non-applicators, herbicides) very low interrater agreement was observed. In epid…

Long-term exposure to transportation noise and risk for atrial fibrillation: A Danish nationwide cohort study.

2022

Background: Epidemiological studies have linked transportation noise and cardiovascular diseases, however, atrial fibrillation (AF) has received limited attention. We aimed to investigate the association between transportation noise and AF risk. Methods: Over the period 1990–2017 we estimated road and railway noise (L den) at the most and least exposed façades for all residential addresses across Denmark. We estimated time-weighted mean noise exposure for 3.6 million individuals age ≥35 years. Of these, 269,756 incident cases of AF were identified with a mean follow-up of 13.0 years. Analyses were conducted using Cox proportional hazards models with adjustment for individual and area-level …
