Objective: To determine the prevalence of edentulism and its association with various socioeconomic factors and oral health habits in the population aged 65-74 years old in the region of Valencia. Methods: A cross sectional study was designed. Thirty-four primary health centers and five nursing homes were chosen at random in the region of Valencia (10-15 voluntary participants per sampling point). Clinical examinations were carried out by three calibrated dentists (kappa>0.85) in the same centers. The total sample consisted of 531 individuals (235 men and 296 women). Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most frequent genetic disorder resulting in increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels from childhood, leading to premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) if left untreated. FH diagnosis is based on clinical criteria and/or genetic testing and its prevalence is estimated as being up to 1:300,000-400,000 for the homozygous and similar to 1:200-300 for the heterozygous form. gamma2-Adaptin is a putative member of the clathrin adaptor protein family with unknown physiological function. We previously reported that gamma2-adaptin acts as a ubiquitin receptor by virtue of its ubiquitin-interacting motif. Here we demonstrate that this motif mediates a specific physical interaction with the ubiquitin ligase Nedd4 and promotes ubiquitination of gamma2-adaptin. By mapping regions of Nedd4 involved in binding to gamma2-adaptin, we identified its C2 domain to be essential, whereas the WW and HECT domains are dispensable. Fluorescence labels as sensors for oxygen binding of arthropod hemocyanins

The molecular basis of high cooperativity in multi-subunit proteins is still unknown in most cases. Oxygen binding by multi-subunit hemocyanins produces two intrinsic spectroscopic signals which are, however, either limited to the UV or are very weak. Here we demonstrate that fluorescence labels emitting in the visible can be used as sensors for cooperative oxygen binding of hemocyanins. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer to the oxygenated active sites quenches the emission of the labels by roughly 50% upon oxygenation of the protein.
