P2-290 Socioeconomic status and mortality among people with diabetes mellitus in Latvia

2011

Introduction The chronic course of the disease and regular need for healthcare suggests that people with diabetes mellitus might be more affected by the socioeconomic inequalities in health. We assessed whether socioeconomic differences exist in mortality of diabetes patients in Latvia. Methods The study population consisted of 4179 diabetes patients (1339 men and 2840 women) participating in the Latvian diabetes survey in 2000. All deaths (n=1771) during a subsequent ten-year period and causes of death were identified through the Causes of Death Data Base. The Cox model was used to test associations (HR (95% CI) presented) between education, income and residence (rural/urban) and mortality…

Intake of Total Polyphenols and Some Classes of Polyphenols Is Inversely Associated with Diabetes in Elderly People at High Cardiovascular Disease Ri…

2016

Background: Higher consumption of some polyphenols has been associated with a reduced risk of diabetes. However, no studies have evaluated the relation between all polyphenol subclasses and the incidence of diabetes. Objective: We aimed to prospectively examine the associations between the intake of total polyphenols and different groups of polyphenols (flavonoids, phenolic acids, stilbenes, lignans, and others) on the risk of incident diabetes in the PREDIMED (Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea) trial. Methods: This was an observational cohort analysis of the nondiabetic participants in the PREDIMED trial. This study was a multicenter, controlled, randomized, parallel-group feeding trial to a…

Frailty as Cardiovascular Risk Factor (and Vice Versa)

2020

The prevalence of frailty seems to be higher in people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to those without, but also the prevalence of CVD is higher in people with frailty compared to robust ones. In longitudinal studies and meta-analyses dealing with the role of frailty as potential risk factor for incident CVD, we have an increasing literature suggesting that frailty increases the risk of these conditions, particularly of fatal events, and independently from several potential confounding factors. Among the domains usually included in the definition of physical frailty, exhaustion, low physical activity, slow gait speed and weakness are significantly associated with the onset of CV…

Marital status and frailty in older people: Gender differences in the Progetto Veneto Anziani longitudinal study

2016

Objectives: Marital status has been associated with disability and mortality, but its potential role as a factor influencing frailty has yet to be thoroughly investigated. The analysis of gender-related differences in the relationship between marital status and frailty is another interesting matter that remains to be fully elucidated. The aim of our study was to examine the association between marital status and the incidence of frailty in a cohort of older men and women over a 4.4-year follow-up. Materials and Methods: A sample of 1887 subjects older than 65 years, enrolled under the Progetto Veneto Anziani (Pro.V.A.) and with no evidence of frailty at baseline, were grouped by marital sta…

Network analysis of the relationship between depressive symptoms, demographics, nutrition, quality of life and medical condition factors in the Osteo…

2019

Abstract Aims A complex interaction exists between age, body mass index, medical conditions, polypharmacotherapy, smoking, alcohol use, education, nutrition, depressive symptoms, functioning and quality of life (QoL). We aimed to examine the inter-relationships among these variables, test whether depressive symptomology plays a central role in a large sample of adults, and determine the degree of association with life-style and health variables. Methods Regularised network analysis was applied to 3532 North-American adults aged ⩾45 years drawn from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Network stability (autocorrelation after case-dropping), centrality of nodes (strength, M, the sum of weight of t…

Adverse Clinical Events and Mortality During Hospitalization and 3 Months After Discharge in Cognitively Impaired Elderly Patients

2012

BACKGROUND: Controversial findings are reported on hospital outcome in cognitively impaired patients. The aim of this study was to explore mortality risk according to cognitive status during hospitalization and after 3 months in elderly patients. METHODS: Sixty-six internal medicine and geriatric wards in Italy participated in the "Registry Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI)" during 2010. Of the 1,380 in-patients, aged 65 and older enrolled, 1,201 were included. Cognition was evaluated with the Short Blessed Test (SBT). Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association of questionable and impaired cognition (according to SBT cutoff points) with mortality during hospitalization and at follow-u…
