Constituents of leaves and flowers essential oils of Helichrysum pallasii (Spreng.) Ledeb. growing wild in Lebanon.

2009

The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained from leaves and flowers of Helichrysum pallasii were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Among the 102 identified constituents, hexadecanoic acid (16.2%), (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (6.8%), tetradecanoic acid (2.6%), and (Z)-caryophyllene (4.2%) were the main constituent of the oil from leaves, while in the oil from flowers hexadecanoic acid (14.7%), (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (14.2%), (Z)-caryophyllene (3.6%), and delta-cadinene (3.1%) predominated. The oils were both characterized by sesquiterpenes (33.4% for leaves and 33.7% for flowers, respectively) and fatty acids and esters (30.3% …

Urticaria in children and adolescents: An updated review of the pathogenesis and management

2018

The present survey represents the latest data on diagnosis and management of childhood urticaria. It has been observed that urticaria occurs less often in children than adults, with symptoms rarely lasting for over 6 weeks. Triggers or aggravating factors can be found only in 21%-55% of cases. Finding autoantibodies in children does not impact a disease prognosis, unlike in adult patients, where the presence of autoantibodies is associated with a more prolonged run of the disease, a more severe prognosis and more intensive treatment methods. The incidence of food allergy equals to 8%-10% of cases. The incidence of Helicobacter Pylori infection in children is lower than that in adults and co…

Bayesian correlated models for assessing the prevalence of viruses in organic and non-organic agroecosystems

2017

Cultivation of horticultural species under organic management has increased in importance in recent years. However, the sustainability of this new production method needs to be supported by scientific research, especially in the field of virology. We studied the prevalence of three important virus diseases in agroecosystems with regard to its management system: organic versus non-organic, with and without greenhouse. Prevalence was assessed by means of a Bayesian correlated binary model which connects the risk of infection of each virus within the same plot and was defined in terms of a logit generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Model robustness was checked through a sensitivity analysis …

Työttömät : Helsingin Sanomien mielipidekirjoituksissa rakentuvia kulttuurisia merkityksiä

2015

Tutkimuksen metodologia pohjaa diskurssianalyysiin. Diskurssianalyysin avulla luokittelen tutkimusaineiston diskursseiksi, joita tarkastelen tutkimuksen analyysivaiheessa. Työttömien mielipidekirjoitukset työttömyydestä luovat yhdenmukaisen kertomuksen. Tutkimuksen pohjalta työttömyys näyttäytyy kulttuurisen normaalin ulkopuolella olemis…

EGF and HGF levels are increased during active HBV infection and enhance survival signaling through extracellular matrix interactions in primary huma…

2008

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major causative agent of chronic liver disease and subsequent liver cirrhosis worldwide. The reduced sensitivity of virus-infected liver cells to apoptosis may play a role in the failure to remove virus-infected cells and eventually promote viral chronicity. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether survival factors induced during compensatory liver regeneration may protect hepatocytes against apoptosis. We evaluated the serum levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in HBV-infected patients and found significant increases in HGF and EGF in patients with active virus infection. In primary human hepatocytes we show …

Molecular Epidemiology and Immunology of Hepatitis B Virus Infection – An Update

2003

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) continues to be one of the most important viral pathogens in humans. This review provides an update on the molecular epidemiology and immunology of HBV infection. DNA sequencing has allowed replacement of the initial serotypic classification of HBV strains by a more systematic genotype system that currently consists of 7 members (genotypes A–G). More recently, sequence analysis of virus isolates from many individual patients has revealed the occurrence of certain mutational hot spots in the genome, some of which appear to correlate with the patient’s immunological and/or disease status; however, cause and effect are not always easily discernible. This holds particula…

Endemic hepatitis C virus infection in a Sicilian town: Further evidence for iatrogenic transmission

2002

The prevalence of and risk factors for HCV and HBV infections in the general population and the predictive value of ALT screening in identifying anti-HCV positive subjects have been evaluated in a small Sicilian town. A random 1:4 sampling from the census of the general population was performed. Anti-HCV, HCV-RNA, HCV genotype, HBsAg, and anti-HBc were tested. The linkage between HCV infection and potential risk factors was evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis. Among 721 subjects studied, 75 (10.4%) were anti-HCV positive. The HCV infection rate increased from 0.4% in subjects 10–29 years of age to 34% in those > 60 years of age. Among the 75 anti-HCV positive subjects, 66.7% …

An outbreak of HBV and HCV infection in a paediatric oncology ward: Epidemiological investigations and prevention of further spread

2003

Hospital-acquired hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections continue to occur despite increased awareness of this problem among the medical community. One hundred six patients were infected in a haematology oncology ward for children, over the time period 1996 to 2000. Serum samples from 45 such patients and 3 from infected medical personnel were used for nucleic acid amplification. HBV core, as well as HCV core and hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) nucleotide sequences, were analysed by phylogenetic tree analysis, in order to characterise the epidemiological pattern of viral transmission on the ward. Samples from 32 patients were positive for HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA by PCR. Ten patients were p…

The Changing Pattern of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection in Intravenous Drug Users

1992

A cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study was carried out between 1985 and 1990 in 1,567 heterosexual intravenous drug users who had been seen at the AIDS Regional Reference Center in Palermo, Italy, to evaluate the rate of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroprevalence in this group and its long-term trend. Sixty serum samples collected from drug users in 1980 and 1983, before the founding of the Center (1985), were tested as well. Some demographic and behavioral risk factors were studied in a subgroup of intravenous drug users enrolled in 1985, 1987, and 1990 for their possible association with HIV-1. These factors were also studied in relation to hepatitis B virus infection, …
