Immunochemical faecal occult blood tests are superior to guaiac-based tests for the detection of colorectal neoplasms

The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a guaiac-based faecal occult blood test (G-FOBT) with that of an immunochemical faecal occult blood test (I-FOBT). A total of 17,215 average risk individuals aged 50 to 74 enrolled in a population-based organised screening programme and performed a 3-day G-FOBT and a 2-day I-FOBT simultaneously. Among participants, 3.1% were found positive for the G-FOBT and 6.9% for the I-FOBT (p<10(-4)). Applying immunohistochemical procedures for the detection of eight different cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and other differentiation markers, we compared the staining patterns of normal cutaneous structures with those of benign adnexal tumors (n = 65). Syringomas exhibited a marker pattern highly reminiscent of that seen in normal dermal eccrine ducts (EMA in peripheral cells, CK 10 in intermediate cells, and CK 6, CK 19, and CEA in luminal cells). To evaluate the prevalence and the evolution over 5-year of juvenile migraine headaches. Sixty-four subjects selected in our 1989 epidemiological survey were included in the study. The criteria of the International Headache Society were used both in 1989 and 1994. Thirty-two out of 64 subjects (50%) had MWAO, 18 (28.1%) had MD and 14 (21.9%) had headache not classifiable (HnC). MWOA persists in 56.2%, becomes MD and HnC in 9.4% and 3.1% of cases respectively, changes to episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) in 12.5%, and remits in 18.8%.
