AbstractBackgroundPowdered infant formula (PIF) is not a sterile product, but this information appears to be poorly diffused among child caregivers. Parents and child care workers may behave in an unsafe manner when handling PIF.MethodsThis study involved parents and child care workers in the 24 municipal child care centres of Palermo. Knowledge and self-reported practices about PIF handling were investigated by a structured questionnaire. A Likert scale was used to measure the strength of the respondent's feelings. Abstract Invasive seaweeds are listed among the most relevant threats to marine ecosystems worldwide. Biodiversity hotspots, such as the Mediterranean Sea, are facing multiple invasions and are expected to be severely affected by the introduction of new non-native seaweeds in the near future. Typification of the Linnaean name Centaurea seridis (Asteraceae)

The genus Centaurea Linnaeus (1753: 909) (Asteraceae) comprises a large number of taxa mainly occurring in the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia (Susanna & Garcia-Jacas 2007). Centaurea seridis Linnaeus (1753: 915) is distributed from south Europe (Spain incl. Balearic Islands, Italy incl. Sicily, France, Albania and Greece) to northwest Africa (Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia). From a nomenclatural standpoint, Centaurea seridis has not been typified (Jarvis 2007: 402). This paper proposes the designation of a lectotype for this Linnaean name, based on the analysis of the protologue and original material.

Diatom species composition and indices for determining the ecological status of coastal Mediterranean Spanish lakes

Diatom indices have been used and tested mainly for assessing the ecological status of rivers and deep lakes, but there are scarce studies that determine their effectiveness in shallow lakes and in coastal Mediterranean lakes. This study evaluates the validity of several common diatom indices (SPI, BDI, CEC and TDIL) for the determination of the ecological quality of three coastal lakes (Valencia, Spain) and presents descriptions and ecological data of the main diatom species recorded. Contribution to the identification of Dianthus rupicola (Caryophyllaceae) subspecies using morphological and molecular approaches

The systematic relationships between the five different subspecies actually recognized within Dianthus rupicola (subsp. aeolicus , subsp. bocchorianus , subsp. hermaensis, subsp. lopadusanus and subsp. rupicola ), were assessed by means of morphometric and molecular analysis. Our results highlighted the molecular differences between the five subspecies of D. rupicola and a morphological differentiation of four groups being D. rupicola subsp. aeolicus and D. rupicola subsp. rupicola partly overlapping.
