The potential of temporal analysis: Combining log data and lag sequential analysis to investigate temporal differences between scaffolded and non-sca…
2020
This paper contributes to the ongoing discussion about analysing the temporal aspects of learning processes in the educational technology research field. Our main aim was to advance methods for analysing temporal aspects of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) processes by introducing the temporal lag sequential analysis (TLSA) technique and by combining TLSA with temporal log data analysis (TLDA). Our secondary aim was to illustrate the potential of these two analysis techniques to reveal the differences between the face-to-face technology-enhanced collaborative inquiry-based learning (CIBL) processes of three different conditions (non-scaffolded, writing scaffolded and script scaffolded gro…
Explainable Student Agency Analytics
2021
Several studies have shown that complex nonlinear learning analytics (LA) techniques outperform the traditional ones. However, the actual integration of these techniques in automatic LA systems remains rare because they are generally presumed to be opaque. At the same time, the current reviews on LA in higher education point out that LA should be more grounded to the learning science with actual linkage to teachers and pedagogical planning. In this study, we aim to address these two challenges. First, we discuss different techniques that open up the decision-making process of complex techniques and how they can be integrated in LA tools. More precisely, we present various global and local e…
Expectations for supporting student engagement with learning analytics : an academic path perspective
2021
There has been a growing interest in higher education to explore how learning analytics (LA) could be used to support student engagement. Providing actionable feedback with LA for students is an emerging area of research. Previous studies have commonly focused on course-level aspects of supporting engagement with LA, but students' perspectives have received limited attention. This study analyzed pre-service teachers’ needs and expectations for LA to support student engagement on the academic path level, which means observing the continuum of study periods and academic years. Qualitative content analysis was conducted for video-recorded student small-group conversations to analyze in-depth h…
How pedagogical agents communicate with students: A two-phase systematic review
2022
Technological advancements have improved the capabilities of pedagogical agents to communicate with students. However, an increased use of pedagogical agents in learning environments calls for a deeper understanding of student–agent communication to assess the effectiveness of pedagogical agents in learning. This study is a two-phase systematic review of scientific papers on pedagogical agent communication research published between 2010 and 2020, including review papers and original research papers. In the first phase, this study analyses literature reviews and meta-analyses to find the status and research gaps. The findings indicate that pedagogical agents' characteristics and impact on l…
Ammatillinen toimijuus työelämän muutosvirrassa.
2014
– Katja Vähäsantasen väitöskirja Vocational teachers’ professional agency in the stream of change (Jyväskylän yliopisto 2013).

Geogebra-avusteinen tutkiva matematiikka opetusharjoittelussa : tutkimuksia opettajan ja oppilaiden toiminnasta
2011
Tässä artikkelikokoelmassa julkaistavat tutkimusraportit syntyivät osana johtamaani ”Tutkiva matematiikka opetusharjoittelussa” -projektia. Projektin tavoitteena on tarkastella tekijöitä, joista tutkiva matematiikan oppiminen muodostuu sekä kehittää ohjeistusta tutkivan matematiikan käytännön toteutukseen. Opetin matematiikan aineenopettajiksi opiskeleville kahdeksan 45 minuutin oppituntia tutkivan matematiikan periaatteita kurssilla ”OPEA411 Syventävä ainepedagogiikka”. Lisäksi kurssin ”OPEA611 Aineenopettaja työnsä tutkijana” 10 oppitunnin aikana perehdyimme tutkivaa matematiikkaa käsitteleviin tutkimuksiin, opetusta kehittämään pyrkiviin tutkimusmenetelmiin ja videoanalyysiin. Näistä 18 …
Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Academic Performance in Finnish Children
2013
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationships between objectively measured and self-reported physical activity, sedentary behavior, and academic performance in Finnish children. Methods: Two hundred and seventy-seven children from five schools in the Jyväskylä school district in Finland (58% of the 475 eligible students, mean age = 12.2 yr, 56% girls) participated in the study in the spring of 2011. Self-reported physical activity and screen time were evaluated with questions used in the WHO Health Behavior in School-Aged Children study. Children’s physical activity and sedentary time were measured objectively by using an ActiGraph GT1M/GT3X accelerometer for seven consecutive da…
Individual differences in processes of lifestyle changes among people with obesity: an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) intervention in a prim…
2020
Abstract Aim: To explore what thoughts, feelings, and learning processes were involved in obese participants’ lifestyle change during an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) lifestyle intervention delivered in primary health care. Background: Previous studies have revealed that lifestyle interventions are effective at promoting initial weight loss, but reduced weight is often difficult to sustain because of the failure to maintain healthy lifestyle changes. Achieving and maintaining lifestyle changes requires to learn self-regulation skills. ACT-based lifestyle interventions combine many self-regulatory skill factors, and the results from previous studies are promising. Research on the i…
Supporting struggling readers with digital game-based learning
2019
This study investigates the effectiveness of a digital game—GraphoLearn (GL)—in supporting second-grade students who have persistent difficulties with acquiring accurate and fluent reading skills. The participants (N = 37) were randomly assigned either to a 6-week intervention including sessions with GL, in addition to school-provided support, or a control group receiving only school-provided support. The intervention took place at the students’ homes and schools under the supervision of their parents and teachers. The results showed that the children who received the GL intervention developed significantly faster in word reading than the control group. Moreover, their reading development w…
