On the non-malacostracan crustaceans (Crustacea: Branchiopoda, Copepoda, Ostracoda) from the inland waters of Fthiotida (Greece)

In the frame of the activities of the LIFE11 NAT/GR/1014 ForOpenForests, some water bodies occurring in the "Ethnikos Drymos Oitis" (GR2440004) and "Oros Kallidromo" (GR2440006) (Sterea Ellada) were investigated with the aim of providing a first census of the composition and diversity of their crustacean fauna. Overall, the sampling of 15 water bodies (7 of them listed as "Mediterranean temporary ponds" sensu EU "Habitats Directive") led to the finding of 13 branchiopod, 11 copepod, and 7 ostracod taxa, including 4 species new for mainland Greece, i.e. the copepods Arctodiaptomus alpinus (Imhoff, 1885) and Diaptomus cf. serbicus, and the branchiopods Leptestheria dahalacensis (Rüppel, 1837)…

The use of tree-rings and foliage as an archive of volcanogenic cation deposition.

Tree cores (Pinus nigra ssp. laricio) and leaves (Castanea sativa) from the flanks of Mount Etna, Sicily were analysed by ICP-MS to investigate whether volcanogenic cations within plant material provide an archive of a volcano's temporal and spatial depositional influence. There is significant compositional variability both within and between trees, but no systematic dendrochemical correlation with periods of effusive, explosive or increased degassing activity. Dendrochemistry does not provide a record of persistent but fluctuating volcanic activity. Phlebiopsis gigantea attīstība un antagonisms pret Heterobasidion spp. parastās egles un priedes koksnē

Pētījuma mēķis bija analizēt celmu apstrādes kvalitāti un P. gigantea attīstību egļu celmos, un novērtēt P. gigantea suspensijas koncentrācijas ietekmi uz sēnes attīstību skuju koku koksnē. Apstrādes kvalitātei ar P. gigantea ir noteicoša loma egļu celmu aizsardzībā. Eksperimentā novērtēja celmu virsmas pārklājumu ar preparātu ‘Rotstop’ un P. gigantea attīstību atkarībā no apstrādē izmantoto caurumiņu diametra zāģa sliedē. Celmu apstrāde veikta izmantojot četras zāģa sliedes ar izurbtiem atšķirīga izmēra caurumiņiem, un standarta zāģa sliedi no ražotāja. Pēc gada no celmiem ievākti un analizēti paraugi. Diurnal variation of tree pollen in the air in finland

Abstract The pollen was collected with Burkard spore traps in Turku and Jyvaskyla, in southern and central Finland. Selected days of high concentration were analysed for hour to hour concentrations. The diurnal variation of pollen concentration was variable in Alnus, Betula, Juniperus and Pinus, while Picea, Populus, Quercus, Salix and Ulmus had regular daytime maxima och nightly minima. The pollen concentrations were closely correlated with increasing temperatures and decreasing relative humidities. Prospective use of collected fog water in the restoration of degraded burned areas under dry Mediterranean conditions

Abstract A mountainous plot located in the interior of the Valencia region (east coast of the Iberian Peninsula) was identified for reforestation using the fog-water collection potential prevailing in the area. Fog data were obtained by means of an instrument ensemble consisting of a passive cylindrical fog-water collector, a rain gauge, a wind direction and velocity sensor and a temperature and humidity probe. Chemometric investigation on structural changes in pine kraft lignin during pulping

Abstract Various structural changes which take place in dissolved lignin during the laboratory-scale kraft pulping of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were studied. Lignin samples were subjected to the alkaline cupric oxide oxidation and the analytical data further processed by various multivariate chemometric techniques (principal component analysis, PCA; principal component regression, PCR; and projection to latent structures, PLS). Several models applicable to the indirect measurement of common pine kraft pulp properties (i.e., total cooking yield, kappa number and ISO brightness) were produced.

The chemical composition of the aerial parts essential oil of Acinos alpinus subsp. nebrodensis (Lamiaceae) growing in Sicily (Italy)

Acinos is a small genus of economically important plants belonging to Lamiaceae family whose botanical collocation is quite problematic due to the disagreement among the botanists and the presence in literature of several names and synonyms from different sources. In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Acinos alpinus subsp. nebrodensis (Strobl) Brullo &amp; Brullo collected in Central Sicily was analyzed by GC-MS. The role of forest fire severity on vegetation recovery after 18 years. Implications for forest management of Quercus suber L. in Iberian Peninsula

Wildfires are a widespread phenomenon in Mediterranean environments. Wildfires result in different fire severities, and then in contrasting plant cover and floristic composition. This paper analyses the recovery of the vegetation eighteen years after a wildfire in Catalonia. The Pinus pinaster ssp. forest was affected by three different severities in July 1994, and studied the spring of 1995 and again in 2008. After eighteen years (2012), our research found that burnt sites constitute a dense forest with a broad variety of species, including many young pines, shrubs and herbaceous plants, but that the risk of fire remains very high, due to the large quantity of fuel and the flammability of …

The contribution of archaeological plant remains in tracing the cultural history of Mediterranean trees: The example of the Roman harbour ofNeapolis

In this paper, we present a detailed record of the plant remains recovered on the palaeo-seafloors of Neapolis harbour, spanning ≈700 years, between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD, thus intersecting the entire Roman Imperial Age. The site preserved many cultivated or cultivable plant remains, especially from food related trees. This particular feature provided the opportunity to reconstruct the puzzling history of planting them and the Roman economy, especially with respect to food production, the market and to dietary habits.
