Intraoperative tramadol reduces shivering but not pain after remifentanil–isoflurane general anaesthesia. A placebo-controlled, double-blind trial

2008

Background and objective Postoperative shivering and pain are frequent problems in patients recovering from anaesthesia with particularly high incidences being observed after remifentanil–isoflurane-based general anaesthesia. The opioid tramadol is generally effective in preventing shivering and treating pain, but its effects are not characterized after remifentanil-based general anaesthesia. This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study evaluated the effects of intraoperative intravenous tramadol on postoperative shivering and pain after remifentanil-based general anaesthesia. Methods After Ethics Committee approval, 60 patients scheduled for lumbar disc surgery were included. Su…

Laparoscopic resection of an epiphrenic diverticulum of the esophagus

2000

Diverticulectomy of epiphrenic diverticula of the esophagus is conventionally performed via left thoracotomy. We report the case of a 57-year-old man who presented with an epiphrenic diverticulum that was resected using a transperitoneal laparoscopic technique.

Clinical trials with a new atypical antipsychotic (Aripiprazole): gender specific information analysis.

2008

In 1993, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a guideline for the study and evaluation of gender-related differences in clinical trials. However, the extent of the implementation of these recommendations has not been systematically reviewed. To determine the proportion of women in clinical trials of Aripiprazole, a new atypical antipsychotic, and to analyze the resulting information on a gender-specific basis.A systematic review was conducted in Medline to identify randomized trials that compared this new antipsychotic drug with placebo or with typical or atypical antipsychotics in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The FDA Guideline was followed for the study and evaluation …

Anticoagulation with argatroban for elective percutaneous coronary intervention: population pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic rela…

2010

The synthetic direct thrombin inhibitor argatroban has a rapid onset and offset of anticoagulation. However, there are no data about the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) relationship of argatroban in patients undergoing contemporary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and no data about other coagulation parameters than activated clotting time (ACT) in this setting. In the ARG-E04-trial, 140 patients were randomly assigned to argatroban (250, 300, or 350 μg/kg as bolus before PCI, followed by 15, 20, or 25 μg/kg/min infusion) or unfractionated heparin (70-100 IU/kg bolus). A 2-compartment model with first-order elimination adequately described the pharmacokinetic profile of argat…

COVID-19 in people living with HIV: Clinical implications of dynamics of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2.

2020

ABSTRACT Background Little evidence on COVID‐19 in people living with HIV (PLWH) is currently available. Material and Methods We reported clinical and viro‐immunological data of all HIV‐positive patients admitted to our centre with COVID‐19 from March 1 to May 12,2020. Results Overall, five patients were included: all were virologically‐suppressed on antiretroviral therapy and CD4+ count was >350 cell/mm3 in all but two patients. Although all patients had evidence of pneumonia on admission, only one developed respiratory failure. SARS‐CoV‐2‐RNA was never detected from nasopharyngeal swabs in two patients, whereas, in the others, viral clearance occurred within a maximum of 43 days. IgG prod…

A new type of autosomal recessive spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda

2004

Repeated occurrence of a hitherto unrecognized form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SED tarda) has been studied in two independent families. Because parental consanguinity was also present in one family, autosomal recessive inheritance is proposed. The onset was in late childhood. The slowly evolving disorder shared several features of the already known types of SED tarda. The radiographic abnormalities were limited to the spine and proximal femora. The patients' hands were normal. The entity described is set apart not only from the X-linked and autosomal-dominant forms of SED tarda but also from the already delineated autosomal recessive types by significant clinical and radiographi…

A Generic Method of Line Matching for Central Imaging Systems under Short-Baseline Motion

2009

Line matching across images taken by a central imaging system (perspective or catadioptric) with focus on short baseline motion of the system is proposed. The relationship between images of lines on unitary sphere is studied and a simple algorithm for matching lines are proposed assuming the rotation of the system is known apriori or it can be estimated from some correspondences in two views. Two methods are discussed for retrieving R in the case it is not known apriori. Experimental results on both synthetic and real images are also presented.

Degradable poly(amidoamine) hydrogels as scaffolds for in vitro culturing of peripheral nervous system cells.

2012

This paper reports on the synthesis and physico-chemical, mechanical, and biological characterization of two sets of poly(amidoamine) (PAA) hydrogels with potential as scaffolds for in vivo peripheral nerve regeneration. They are obtained by polyaddition of piperazine with N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide) or 1,4-bis(acryloyl)piperazine with 1,2-diaminoethane as cross-linking agent and exhibit a combination of relevant properties, such as mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability, ability to induce adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells (SCs) preserving their viability. Moreover, the most promising hydrogels, that is those deriving from 1,4-bis(acryloyl)piperazine, allow the …

On the coupling dynamics between thermally stressed beams and granular chains

2015

The in-situ measurement of thermal stress in slender beams, or long continuous welded rails, may prevent structural anomalies. With this aim, we investigated the coupling dynamics between a beam and the highly nonlinear solitary waves propagating along a straight granular chain in contact with the beam. We hypothesized that these waves can be used to measure the stress of thermally loaded structures, or to infer the neutral temperature, i.e., the temperature at which this stress is null. We studied numerically and experimentally the mechanical interaction of one and two straight chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam that is subjected to heat. The results show that c…

The use of non-cavitating coupling fluids for intensifying sonoelectrochemical processes

2020

Abstract For the first time, we have investigated the beneficial effects of non-cavitating coupling fluids and their moderate overpressures in enhancing mass-transfer and acoustic energy transfer in a double cell micro-sonoreactor. Silicon and engine oils of different viscosities were used as non-cavitating coupling fluids. A formulated monoethylene glycol (FMG), which is a regular cooling fluid, was also used as reference. It was found that silicon oil yielded a maximum acoustic energy transfer (3.05 W/cm2) from the double jacketed cell to the inner cell volume, at 1 bar of coupling fluid overpressure which was 2.5 times higher than the regular FMG cooling fluid. It was also found that the…
