Application of a non linear local analysis method for the problem of mixed convection instability

2007

Abstract We consider the problem of laminar mixed convection flow between parallel, vertical and uniformly heated plates where the governing dimensionless parameters are the Prandtl, Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers. Using the method based on the centre manifold theorem which was derived from the general theory of dynamical systems, we reduce a three-dimensional simplified model of ordinary differential amplitude equations emanating from the original Navier-Stokes system of the problem in the vicinity of a trivial stationary solution. We have found that when the forcing parameter, the Rayleigh number, increases beyond the critical value Ra s , the stationary solution is a pitchfork bifurcation…

Data gathering and mathematical modelling for pitch stabilisation of a high speed catamaran

2011

This paper deals with the data gathering phase for a 21-foot long planing catamaran. The boat experiences a take-off phenomenon at high speed which needs to be countered. An overview of stability problems in high speed hydroplanes is described with possible solutions recommended. A subsequent gathering of data using laser scanning and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the boat are described. The paper ends with a look at the initial developments of stabilising systems for the boat.

Leakage-detection in blade pitch control systems for wind turbines

2012

The main contribution of the work is a systematic study evaluating the performance of different filters for leakage detection in pitch control systems. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is examined in a Matlab/Simulink real-time environment. The test bed consists of the following elements: hydraulic power unit, servo valve, two leakage bypasses, hydraulic cylinder, payload and xPC-based control system. The filters are tested with the state-augmentation and the hypothesis testing approaches. To our knowledge, the comparison of these different approaches has not been done previously for this type of application. The paper concludes on the accuracy and sensitivity of the leakage detect…

Robust Predictive Control of a variable speed wind turbine using the LMI formalism

2014

This paper proposes a Robust Fuzzy Multivariable Model Predictive Controller (RFMMPC) using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) formulation. The main idea is to solve at each time instant, an LMI optimization problem that incorporates input, output and Constrained Receding Horizon Predictive Control (CRHPC) constraints, and plant uncertainties, and guarantees certain robustness properties. The RFMMPC is easily designed by solving a convex optimization problem subject to LMI conditions. Then, the derived RFMMPC applied to a variable wind turbine with blade pitch and generator torque as two control inputs. The effectiveness of the proposed design is shown by simulation results.

Linear parameter‐varying modelling and control of an offshore wind turbine with constrained information

2014

This study deals with linear parameter-varying modelling and output-feedback H ∞ control design for an offshore wind turbine. The controller is designed with consideration that not all the information in the feedback loop will be used. This constraint is incorporated into the design procedure. Constrained information means that a special zero-non-zero pattern is forced upon the gain matrix. The constrained controller is obtained based on parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions and formulated in terms of linear-matrix inequalities. Since the functions are dependent on the wind speed and accurate wind speed measurements are rarely available in practice, an extended Kalman filter is used to est…

Sliding-mode observer based sensor-less control of a small wind energy conversion system

2015

Small wind turbines are becoming an attractive solution for household applications. These micro generation units can be used as standalone applications or grid connected applications. However to get the full potential benefits of these wind turbines, systems should be low cost and reliable. Introducing the wind speed and rotor speed sensors at the generator shaft may reduce the reliability of small wind turbines. In this study, a grid connected sensor-less 5 kW small wind energy conversion system has been studied. The maximum power point tracking method of the wind turbine is totally independent from wind speed and rotor speed measurements. Optimum rotor speed and actual rotor speed are est…

Wind turbine modeling using the bond graph

2011

Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CACSD.2011.6044572 This paper addresses the problem of bond graph methodology as a graphical approach for modeling wind turbine systems. In this case, we consider the modeling of a wind turbine system with individual pitch control scheme and the interaction with tower motions. Two different bond graph models are presented, one complex and one simplified. Furthermore, the purpose of this paper is not to validate a specific wind turbine model, but rather show the difference between modeling with a cl…

Pitch controller modeling for wind turbine power regulation using feed forward control strategies

2015

In this work, pitch controlled power regulation of a horizontal axis wind turbine coupled with a fixed speed asynchronous generator is studied using SimulationX®. Wind turbines need to be operated as per specified power output vs wind speed characteristics of it. If the wind speed is between the cut-in wind speed and the rated wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated constant Cp. If wind speed is between the rated speed and the cut-off wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated for constant rated power. To extract rated power above rated wind speed a proper controller strategy is required. This work provides a simulation model for power regulation of a horizontal a…

Different Wings Flowfields Interaction on the Wing-Propeller Coupling

1997

A high-portability numerical technique based on the method of free wake analysis (FWA) is described that analyzes the interference between an aircraft propeller and a wing having different planforms and computes the influence of the wing aerodynamic field on the propeller performance. For an isolated propeller and wing, the models employed are based on the FWA and Prandtl theory, respectively. The performance of the propeller in the presence of the wing is related to the wing angle of attack and to the variation of wing circulation and the corresponding induced velocity at the propeller disk. A numerical model, previously and successfully used, was implemented to account for the effects of …

Effects of electrical and mechanical parameters on the transient voltage stability of a fixed speed wind turbine

2011

Abstract In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a wind turbine connected to the grid is examined. The model of the fixed speed wind turbine has been developed with the Simulink simulation tool (Matlab Inc.) It is composed of the induction generator, the shaft system, an aerodynamic model of the wind turbine rotor and the pitch control system. Using this model, a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the faulty line. The rigorous implementation of the simulink model allowed the authors to evaluate the exact dependence of various electrical parameters for the induction generator on voltage stability. Furthermore, the effects of wind turbine mechan…
