Automatic Seed Placement for Breast Lesion Segmentation on US Images

2012

Breast lesion boundaries have been mostly extracted by using conventional approaches as a previous step in the development of computer-aided diagnosis systems. Among these, region growing is a frequently used segmentation method. To make the segmentation completely automatic, most of the region growing methods incorporate automatic selection of the seed points. This paper proposes a new automatic seed placement algorithm for breast lesion segmentation on ultrasound images by means of assigning the probability of belonging to a lesion for every pixel depending on intensity, texture and geometrical constraints. The proposal has been evaluated using a set of sonographic breast images with acco…

Domain separation for efficient adaptive active learning

2011

This paper proposes a procedure aimed at efficiently adapting a classifier trained on a source image to a similar target image. The adaptation is carried out through active queries in the target domain following a strategy particularly designed for the case where class distributions have shifted between the two images. We first suggest a pre-selection of candidate pixels issued from the target image by keeping only those samples appearing to be lying in a region of the input space not yet covered by the existing ground truth (source domain pixels). Then, exploiting a classifier integrating instance weights, active queries are performed on the target image. As the inclusion to the training s…

Comparison of region of interest segmentation methods for video-based heart rate measurements

2018

International audience; Conventional contact photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors are not suitable in situations of skin damage or when unconstrained movement is required. As a consequence, remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has recently emerged because it provides remote physiological measurements without expensive hardware and improves comfort for long-term monitoring. RPPG estimation methods use the spatially averaged RGB values of pixels in a Region Of Interest (ROI) to generate a temporal RGB signal. The selection of ROI is a critical first step to obtain reliable pulse signals and must contain as many skin pixels as possible with a low percentage of non-skin pixels. In this paper, we ex…

Reconstruction of 3D grain boundaries from rock thin sections, using an advanced polarised-light microscopy method

2017

Grain boundaries play a significant role in materials by initiating reactions and collecting impurities. Here we present FAGO (Fabric Analyser Grain boundary recOnstruction), a first step towards the automatic determination of three-dimensional (3D) grain boundary geometry using polarised light. The trace of the grain boundaries from 2D rock thin sections are determined primarily from data acquired using an automatic fabric analyser microscope and the FAME software (fabric analyser-based microstructure evaluation; Peternell and colleagues and Hammes and Peternell). Based on the Fabric Analyser G50's unique arrangement of nine differently oriented light sources the retardation can be determi…

The Wide Field Imager instrument for Athena

2017

ESA's next large X-ray mission ATHENA is designed to address the Cosmic Vision science theme 'The Hot and Energetic Universe'. It will provide answers to the two key astrophysical questions how does ordinary matter assemble into the large-scale structures we see today and how do black holes grow and shape the Universe. The ATHENA spacecraft will be equipped with two focal plane cameras, a Wide Field Imager (WFI) and an X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU). The WFI instrument is optimized for state-of-The-Art resolution spectroscopy over a large field of view of 40 amin x 40 amin and high count rates up to and beyond 1 Crab source intensity. The cryogenic X-IFU camera is designed for high-spect…

Estimation of Evapotranspiration by Hargreaves Formula and Remotely Sensed Data in Semi-arid Mediterranean Areas

1997

Abstract A methodology is proposed for estimating evapotranspiration by Hargreaves formula and image analysis of remotely sensed data. At first, for a large sicilian basin (Belice basin), theactualevapotranspiration values are estimated by the energy balance equation, spectral data of two Landsat TM images and ground agrometereological measurements. Then theseactualevapotranspiration estimates and thereferenceevapotranspiration values obtained by a slightly modified Hargreaves formula, which incorporates the outgoing short-wave radiation and an albedo coefficient equal to 0·23, are used for calculating suitable crop coefficients. Finally, the minimum area of each land-use map unit, obtained…

Analysis of Hyperspectral Images of Citrus Fruits

2010

Publisher Summary Some of the most important aspects that need to be taken into consideration when developing a hyperspectral inspection system for citrus include the geometry of the fruit, the emission spectrum of the lighting source, and their interaction. Because many citrus fruits are almost spherical, each point of their surface reflects the electromagnetic radiation differently toward the camera. This causes a gradual darkening of the image especially the further pixels from the light source, which is a phenomenon that must be artificially corrected. In addition, the variation of the efficiency of the filters with the wavelength should be also taken into consideration to enable the ap…

Software for automated application of a reference-based method fora posterioridetermination of the effective radiographic imaging geometry

2005

Objectives: Presentation and validation of software developed for automated and accurate application of a reference-based algorithm (reference sphere method: RSM) inferring the effective imaging geometry from quantitative radiographic image analysis. Methods: The software uses modern pattern recognition and computer vision algorithms adapted for the particular application of automated detection of the reference sphere shadows (ellipses) with subpixel accuracy. It applies the RSM algorithm to the shadows detected, thereby providing threedimensional Cartesian coordinates of the spheres. If the three sphere centres do not lie on one line, they uniquely determine the imaging geometry. Accuracy …

Multi-resolution spatial unmixing for MERIS and Landsat image fusion

2016

Nowadays, the increasing quantity of applications using images from Earth Observation satellites makes demanding better spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. Nevertheless, due to the technical constraint of a trade off between spatial and spectral resolutions, and between spatial resolution and coverage, high spatial resolution is related with low spectral and temporal resolutions and vice versa. Data fusion methods are a good solution to combine information from multiple sensors in order to obtain image products with better characteristics. In this paper, we propose an image fusion approach based on a multi-resolution and multi-source unmixing. The proposed methodology yields a compo…

An interpolation-based data fusion scheme for enhancing the resolution of thermal image sequences

2014

In several human activities, such as agriculture and forest management, the monitoring of radiometric surface temperature is key. In particular both high spatial resolution and high acquisition rate are desirable but, due to the hardware limitations, these two characteristics are not met by the same sensor. The fusion of remotely sensed data acquired by sensors with different spatial and temporal resolution is a profitable choice to face this issue. When the real-time requirement is relaxed, the data sequence can be processed as a whole, allowing to improve the final result. Within this framework, we propose a novel batch sharpening strategy, relying on interpolation, data fusion and Bayesi…
