Beam Formation Studies on the CERN IS03b H$^-$ Source

2022

Abstract An H- ion source is being operated at the new 160 MeV linear injector (Linac4) of the CERN accelerator complex. The source’s plasma is of the Radio Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma type (RF-ICP), without magnetic cusp and runs with Cs-loss compensation [1]. Vertical downward oriented filter- and electron dump-dipolar magnetic fields expand over the plasma chamber, beam-formation, beam-extraction and electron dump regions and generate horizontal asymmetry and beam angular deflection partially compensated by mechanical alignment of the front-end. The H- beam is generated via volume and caesiated plasma surface modes, the latter inducing a radial asymmetry characterized by an incr…

Comparison of LIBS and micro-XRF measurements on bronze alloys for monitoring plasma effects

2011

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is often used as atomic spectroscopic technique for elemental analysis of materials. However, it presents some drawbacks that make an accurate quantitative analysis difficult. Since the plasma properties, such as spatial inhomogeneity and plume stoichiometry strongly depend on the experimental conditions, the measurements are less reproducible. In order to evaluate the measurement fluctuations, we propose to use the more established micro X-Ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) technique for validating LIBS data. In particular, the quantitative data, obtained by varying the laser fluence, the shot numbers and the temporal acquisition parameters, …

Dry deposition models for radionuclides dispersed in air: a new approach for deposition velocity evaluation schema

2017

In the framework of a National Research Program funded by the Italian Minister of Economic Development, the Department of Energy, Information Engineering and Mathematical Models (DEIM) of Palermo University and ENEA Research Centre of Bologna, Italy is performing several research activities to study physical models and mathematical approaches aimed at investigating dry deposition mechanisms of radioactive pollutants. On the basis of such studies, a new approach to evaluate the dry deposition velocity for particles is proposed. Comparisons with literature experimental data show that the proposed dry deposition scheme allows to capture the main phenomena involved in the dry deposition process…

Line Shape Measurement and Modelling for Plasma Diagnostics

2014

In this paper we discuss different methods of narrow spectral line shape measurements for a wide spectral range by means of high-resolution spectrometers such as the Fabry-Perot spectrometer, Zeeman spectrometer and Fourier transform spectrometer as well as a theoretical model for spectral line shape modelling and solving of the inverse task based on Tikhonov's regularization method. Special attention is devoted to the line shape measurements for the optically thin light sources filled with Hg, Ar, Xe, Kr for their use in high precision analysers for detection of heavy metals and benzene.

An accurate optical technique for measuring the nuclear polarisation of 3He gas

2010

12 pages; International audience; In the metastability exchange optical pumping cells of our on-site production unit and of our other experimental set-ups, we use a light absorption technique to measure the 3He nuclear polarisation. It involves weak probe beams at 1083 nm, that are either perpendicular or parallel to the magnetic field and cell axis, with suitable light polarisations. When metastability exchange collisions control the populations of the sublevels in the 23S state, absolute values of the 3He ground state nuclear polarisation are directly inferred from the ratio of the absorption rates measured for these probe beams. Our report focuses on the transverse detection scheme for w…

A Low Energy H- Beamline for the ALPHA Antihydrogen Experiment

2022

Abstract The CERN ALPHA experiment makes precision measurements of antihydrogen atoms, confined in a superconducting magnetic minimum trap. Recent measurements of the antihydrogen spectrum have already provided high-resolution tests of fundamental symmetries, and ALPHA has now embarked on an ambitious upgrade programme aimed at directly comparing hydrogen and antihydrogen within their existing atom trap. One aspect of this upgrade will be the development of a low-energy (50 eV) hydrogen ion source that is compatible with ALPHA’s existing magnetic charged particle beamlines. PELLIS, previously developed at JYFL, is a 5 keV filament-driven source that generates H- beams with low emittances an…

Empirical study of multidimensional Child-Langmuir law with plasma ion source extraction using round apertures

2022

Abstract One dimensional Child-Langmuir (CL) law is commonly used in ion source physics to describe space charge limited ion extraction from the plasma. Recently 2D and 3D CL laws have been derived, but plasma ion extraction does not strictly meet the assumptions in these CL laws. Investigations on the applicability of the CL laws to ion source extraction were conducted using filament-driven ion source, measuring the beam currents as a function of extraction voltage. The experiments are complemented with simulations where IBSimu is used for studying the behaviour of plasma meniscus. Three different voltage regions were identified with low, moderate and high voltage. With moderate voltages t…

Measurement of ionization, charge exchange and ion confinement times in charge breeder ECR ion sources with short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions

2022

Abstract The Consecutive Transients (CT) method is used for estimating the characteristic times of ionization, charge exchange and confinement within the plasma of a Charge Breeder Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (CB-ECRIS). The method reveals differences in the characteristic times between different source configurations, with K9+ charge breeding efficiencies of 8.9 % and 20.4 %, and allows qualitative explanation of the improved breeding efficiency. The increase in K9+ efficiency is accompanied by a decrease in ionization time for low charge states, a decrease of charge exchange time for high charge states, and an overall decrease of the ion confinement time, which increases non-l…

Recent developments and results of the LPSC PHOENIX type ECR charge breeder

2022

Abstract Four models of the PHOENIX ECR charge breeder have been manufactured for ISOL application. Two are currently under operation at TRIUMF (ISAC) and GANIL (SPIRAL 1) while the SPES one is being installed on the facility. The last model is set on the LPSC 1+N+ test bench where a R&D program is ongoing to improve its performances. The last modifications consisted in improving the beam line vacuum and the alignment. Commissioning experiments showed an improvement of the charge breeder performances for all the tested species. The global CB efficiency is close to 100% for Cs when correcting the measurements with the beam transmission. Na and K efficiencies have increased significantly …
