Genetic studies on human personality have provided little satisfactory results to date mainly because of the complexity of this trait. Neonatal temperament using observational measures is an alternative phenotype to approach genetics to human behavior. An association study was conducted on 117 Caucasian newborns. Their temperament was evaluated using the Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale 48 h after birth. Thirteen polymorphisms in the SLC6A4, DRD4 and TFAP2B genes were genotyped. Concomitant inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver and spleen.

We report the case of a 53-year-old man with inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the liver and spleen. This concomitant association has rarely been reported. The patient presented with a hypoechoic mass in the liver and a clinical picture of recurrent sepsis; hematochemical exams and imaging data were nonspecific. Antibiotic therapy improved the clinical course, but did not resolve it definitively. After 50 days of therapy, as the hepatic mass decreased a similar lesion appeared in the spleen. Evaluation of an automated chromogenic substrate assay for the rapid determination of hirudin in plasma.

Abstract A fully mechanized chromogenic substrate assay method for the rapid and specific determination of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) in citrated plasma on clinical chemistry analyzers (Hitachi 911 and Cobas Mira) is described. In a first step, 12 μl sample volume is mixed with the chromogenic substrate. Due to the almost immediate action of hirudin the inhibitory reaction and the cleavage of the substrate is started simultaneously when bovine thrombin is added in excess. This excludes interferences by antithrombin III or heparin cofactor II. The change in absorbance/min is recorded at 405 nm. The measuring range is about 0.2 – 4.0 mg/l r-hirudin on both analyzers. 1. After i.p. injection of [2,3-14C]acrylonitrile to rats, a significant portion of radioactivity becomes irreversibly attached to proteins of liver, lung, spleen and other tissues. 2. When rat liver microsomes were incubated with [2,3-14C]acrylonitrile, a time-dependent irreversible binding of radioactivity occurred to microsomal proteins. This binding was not dependent on NADPH. A high extent of binding to heat-inactivated microsomes indicated that no enzymic metabolic step was involved. 3. Background —The number of infectious pathogens to which an individual has been exposed (infectious burden) may correlate with coronary artery disease (CAD). In a prospective study, we evaluated the effect of 8 pathogens and the aggregate pathogen burden on the risk for future fatal cardiac events among patients with angiographically documented CAD. The Association of Ambient Temperature and Violent Crime

It is controversial if global warming will result into increased crime and conflict rate, and no causal neurobiological mechanisms have been proposed for the putative association between ambient temperature and aggressive behavior. This study shows that during 1996–2013, ambient temperature explained 10% of variance in the violent crime rate in Finland, corresponding to a 1.7% increase/degree centigrade. Ambient temperature also correlated with a one month delay in circannual changes in peripheral serotonin transporter density among both offenders and healthy control subjects, which itself correlated strongly with the monthly violent crime rate. A new alternative in vitro method for quantification of Toxoplasma gondii infectivity.

An in vitro method to determine the infectious potency of an unknown suspension of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii based on kinetics of host cells lysis was developed. Mic1-3KO a mutant strain of T. gondii RH tachyzoites was inoculated in 25-cm² flasks containing a 90% confluent monolayer of human foreskin fibroblasts. Lysis kinetics was monitored for infection ratios ranging from 1∶10⁶ to 1∶10; we defined 10⁶ tachyzoites/ml⁻¹ as the threshold value for parasite egress. Results allowed us to build a calibration curve relating the initial infection ratios to the time needed to reach 10⁶ tachyzoites/ml⁻¹.
