Processing conditions, microstructure and mechanical properties of hetero-nanostructured ODS FeAl alloys produced by spark plasma sintering

2013

International audience; Spark plasma sintering (SPS) has been used to sinter a milled oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) FeAl powder in order to prepare dense nanostructured parts. The effect of processing conditions including sintering temperature, holding time and degassing treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-sintered materials was investigated. A hetero-nanostructure that contains nano, ultrafine and micrometric grains was confirmed to be developed whatever the processing window, due to the large temperature difference generated during the SPS process itself. The grain size distribution can be tailored by selecting a combination of sintering temperature …

Zero-field magnetometry based on nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

2018

Ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds are widely utilized for magnetometry, magnetic-field imaging and magnetic-resonance detection. They have not been used for magnetometry at zero ambient field because Zeeman sublevels lose first-order sensitivity to magnetic fields as they are mixed due to crystal strain or electric fields. In this work, we realize a zero-field (ZF) magnetometer using polarization-selective microwave excitation in a 12C-enriched HPHT crystal sample. We employ circularly polarized microwaves to address specific transitions in the optically detected magnetic resonance and perform magnetometry with a noise floor of 250 pT/Hz^(1/2). This technique opens the …

Light shifts are an important source of noise and systematics in optically pumped magnetometers. We demonstrate that the long spin-coherence time in paraffin-coated cells leads to spatial averaging of the vector light shift over the entire cell volume. This renders the averaged vector light shift independent, under certain approximations, of the light-intensity distribution within the sensor cell. Importantly, the demonstrated averaging mechanism can be extended to other spatially varying phenomena in anti-relaxation-coated cells with long coherence times.

Spherical fused silica cells filled with pure helium for nuclear magnetic resonance-magnetometry.

2016

High magnetic fields (> 1 T) are measured by NMR magnetometers with un-rivaled precision if the precessing spin sample provides long coherence times. The longest coherence times are found in diluted ${}^{3}$He samples, which can be hyperpolarized for sufficient signal strength. In order to have minimal influence on the homogeneity and value of the measured magnetic field the optimal container for the ${}^{3}$He should be a perfect sphere. A fused silica sphere with an inner diameter of 8 mm and an outer diameter of 12 mm was made from two hemispheres by diffusion bonding leaving only a small hole for cleaning and evacuation. This hole was closed in vacuum by a CO${}_{2}$ laser and the inner…

Broadband Terahertz Probes of Anisotropic Magnetoresistance Disentangle Extrinsic and Intrinsic Contributions

2021

Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is a ubiquitous and versatile probe of magnetic order in contemporary spintronics research. Its origins are usually ascribed to extrinsic effects (i.e. spin-dependent electron scattering), whereas intrinsic (i.e. scattering-independent) contributions are neglected. Here, we measure AMR of polycrystalline thin films of the standard ferromagnets Co, Ni, Ni81Fe19 and Ni50Fe50 over the frequency range from DC to 28 THz. The large bandwidth covers the regimes of both diffusive and ballistic intraband electron transport and, thus, allows us to separate extrinsic and intrinsic AMR components. Analysis of the THz response based on Boltzmann transport theory revea…

Modeling of ITER TF cooling system through 2D thermal analyses and enthalpy balance

2017

Abstract The winding pack of the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coils is composed of 134 turns of Nb3Sn Cable in Conduit Conductor (CICCs) wound in 7 double pancakes and cooled by supercritical helium (He) at cryogenic temperature. The cooling of the Stainless Steel (SS) case supporting the winding pack is guaranteed by He circulation in 74 parallel channels. A 2D approach to compute the temperature distribution in the ITER TF winding pack is here proposed. The TF is divided in 32 poloidal segments, for each segment the corresponding 2D model is built and a thermal analysis is performed applying the corresponding nuclear heating computed with MCNP code considering the latest design updates, such …

X-ray induced defects in advanced lithium orthosilicate pebbles with additions of lithium metatitanate

2019

Abstract Advanced lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) pebbles with additions of lithium metatitanate (Li2TiO3) as a secondary phase have attracted international attention as an alternative solid-state candidate for the tritium breeding in future nuclear fusion reactors. In this research, the generation of radiation-induced defects in the Li4SiO4 pebbles with various contents of Li2TiO3 was analysed in-situ by X-ray induced luminescence technique. After irradiation with X-rays, the accumulated radiation-induced defects in the Li4SiO4 pebbles were studied by electron spin resonance, thermally stimulated luminescence and absorption spectrometry. On the basis of the obtained results, it is conclude…

A Generalized Method for High‐Speed Fluorination of Metal Oxides by Spark Plasma Sintering Yields Ta 3 O 7 F and TaO 2 F with High Photocatalytic Act…

2021

A general method to carry out the fluorination of metal oxides with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon) waste by spark plasma sintering (SPS) on a minute scale with Teflon is reported. The potential of this new approach is highlighted by the following results. i) The tantalum oxyfluorides Ta3 O7 F and TaO2 F are obtained from plastic scrap without using toxic or caustic chemicals for fluorination. ii) Short reaction times (minutes rather than days) reduce the process time the energy costs by almost three orders of magnitude. iii) The oxyfluorides Ta3 O7 F and TaO2 F are produced in gram amounts of nanoparticles. Their synthesis can be upscaled to the kg range with industrial sintering …

Radiation stability of long-term annealed bi-phasic advanced ceramic breeder pebbles

2019

Abstract Advanced ceramic breeder pebbles consisting of Li4SiO4 and additions of Li2TiO3 were tested regarding their long-term thermal and to their radiation stability. As-prepared and long-term annealed pebbles were irradiated with accelerated electrons (up to 6 MGy) to investigate the formation of radiation-induced defects and radiolysis products caused by ionizing radiation. By using Raman spectroscopy the formation of significant amounts of radiolysis products can be excluded. Electron spin resonance spectrometry revealed several paramagnetic radiation-induced defects, such as HC2 centres ( SiO 4 3 - and TiO 3 - ), E’ centres ( SiO 3 3 - and TiO 3 3 - ), Ti 3 + centres and peroxide radi…

Study of tritium and helium generation and release from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb under neutron irradiation

2019

Abstract This paper describes the experiments on study of tritium and helium generation and release processes from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb. The irradiation was performed at the IVG.1M research reactor at 6 MW of thermal power. The irradiation temperature increased step by step from 225 to 550 °C. A qualitative assessment of the experimental results showed that as the temperature rises above 390 °C, the tritium flux from the sample consisting of T2 and HT molecules decreases. It was concluded that the observed effect is similar to the previously observed one for lead-lithium eutectics with Li17Pb83 composition.
