Mass dimension one fermions and their gravitational interaction

2019

We investigate in detail the interaction between the spin-${1/2}$ fields endowed with mass dimension one and the graviton. We obtain an interaction vertex that combines the characteristics of scalar-graviton and Dirac's fermion-graviton vertices, due to the scalar-dynamic attribute and the fermionic structure of this field. It is shown that the vertex obtained obeys the Ward-Takahashi identity, ensuring the gauge invariance for this interaction. In the contribution of the mass dimension one fermion to the graviton propagator at one-loop, we found the conditions for the cancellation of the tadpole term by a cosmological counter-term. We calculate the scattering process for arbitrary momentum…

First Measurements with the DTAS Detector

2016

The DTAS detector will be an important instrument in the DESPEC experiment at FAIR for \(\beta \)-decay studies of exotic nuclei far from stability. The first measurements with this new detector have been performed with low energy radioactive beams at the upgraded IGISOL IV facility. The characterization of the detector was done by comparison of measurements with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations , and the first analysis of the cases of interest are in progress.

Nonlinear collective oscillations of an ion cloud in a Paul trap

1997

In an experiment using a Paul trap, we create a ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ ion cloud by electron ionization of the background gas at ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$-mbar residual pressure. Exciting the ions parametrically at twice the frequency of the secular motion of ions in the $r$ or $z$ direction, we observe a narrow resonance at some distance from the motional resonance center if the amplitude of the exciting field exceeds a threshold value. The threshold value decreases with increasing ion number. Since the narrow resonance does not shift with ion number, we interpret it as a collective resonance of the center of mass of the ion cloud. The resonance shape exhibits the typical form of a driven a…

Unusual Optical Properties of the Dense Nonequilibrium Plasma

2006

A concise overview of new optical properties of dense nonequilibrium plasma formed on the solid state target boundary is given. In this chapter, we describe phenomena such as the third harmonic generation in the skin layer, collisionless electron heating in the high frequency skin-effect regime, absorption, and reflection and transmission of radiation by a plasma with anisotropic electron distribution.

TIME-RESOLVED EMISSION FROM BRIGHT HOT PIXELS OF AN ACTIVE REGION OBSERVED IN THE EUV BAND WITH SDO/AIA AND MULTI-STRANDED LOOP MODELING

2015

Evidence for small amounts of very hot plasma has been found in active regions and might be the indication of an impulsive heating, released at spatial scales smaller than the cross section of a single loop. We investigate the heating and substructure of coronal loops in the core of one such active region by analyzing the light curves in the smallest resolution elements of solar observations in two EUV channels (94 A and 335 A) from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. We model the evolution of a bundle of strands heated by a storm of nanoflares by means of a hydrodynamic 0D loop model (EBTEL). The light curves obtained from the random combination of tho…

Nonstationary oscillations in gyrotrons

2001

The onset of stochastic oscillations in gyrotrons is studied by means of the self-consistent theory describing nonstationary processes. Complicated alternating sequences of regions of stationary, automodulation, and chaotic oscillations are found in the plane of the generalized gyrotron variables: cyclotron resonance mismatch and dimensionless current. The results of the investigations are important in connection with attempts to increase the output power of gyrotrons by raising the current.

Electron–cyclotron–resonance plasma heating with broadband microwave radiation: Anomalous effects

2007

Abstract Affects of microwave bandwidth on the high-charge-states of ion beams extracted from a conventional minimum- B -geometry ECR ion source are first demonstrated. The high-charge-state intensities, produced with broadband microwave radiation are observed to be factors ⩾2 than those produced with narrow bandwidth microwave radiation at the same power level.

Detailed diagnostics of an X-ray flare in the single giant HR 9024

2007

We analyze a 96 ks Chandra/HETGS observation of the single G-type giant HR 9024. The high flux allows us to examine spectral line and continuum diagnostics at high temporal resolution, to derive plasma parameters. A time-dependent 1D hydrodynamic model of a loop with half-length $L = 5 \times 10^{11}$ cm ($\sim R_{\star}/2$), cross-section radius $r = 4.3 \times 10^{10}$ cm, with a heat pulse of 15 ks and $2 \times 10^{11}$~erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ deposited at the loop footpoints, satisfactorily reproduces the observed evolution of temperature and emission measure, derived from the analysis of the strong continuum emission. For the first time we can compare predictions from the hydrodynamic …

Method for estimating charge breeder ECR ion source plasma parameters with short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions

2020

Abstract A new method for determining plasma parameters from beam current transients resulting from short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions into a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been developed. The proposed method relies on few assumptions, and yields local values for the ionisation times 1 / n e σ v q → q + 1 inz , charge exchange times 1 / n 0 σ v q → q − 1 cx , the ion confinement times τ q , as well as estimates for the minimum plasma energy contents n e E e and the plasma triple products n e E e τ q . The method is based on fitting the current balance equation on the extracted beam currents of high charge state ions, and using the fitting coefficients to dete…

Polarity and bioelectrical patterning in a linear chain of non-excitable cells

2020

Abstract Polarity in multicellular systems is influenced by bioelectrical signals because electric potentials can act as spatio-temporal patterns for other biochemical processes that eventually emerge as long-lasting biological outcomes. We study the role of the electric potential in establishing head-tail polarity for the case of a chain of non-excitable cells. This biophysical model incorporates both single-cell (membrane ion channels) and multicellular (intercellular gap junctions) characteristics. The results are presented in the form of a bioelectrical phase space that complements traditional biochemical approaches and provides qualitative insights for the case of anterior/posterior po…
