Evolution of the electron distribution function in intense laser-plasma interactions

We report a numerical investigation of the time evolution of the electron distribution function (EDF) in a laser-embedded, fully ionized plasma. A distinctive feature of the calculations is removal of the frequently adopted assumption of small anisotropy of the EDF in velocity space. This requires solving a two-dimensional partial differential equation for the EDF. Within the adopted range of parameters, the EDF undergoes significant changes. An initially isotropic EDF transforms rapidly into an anisotropic one characterized by a longitudinal velocity scale larger than the perpendicular one. Elliptic Flow of Charged Particles in Pb-Pb Collisions atsNN=2.76  TeV

We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) p = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2 < p(t) < 5.0 GeV/c. The elliptic flow signal v(2), measured using the 4-particle correlation method, averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 +/- 0.002(stat) +/- 0.003(syst) in the 40%-50% centrality class. Neutral pion and η meson production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

Neutral pion and η meson production in the transverse momentum range 1 <pT< 20 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in central and semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN  = 2.76 TeV. These results were obtained using the photon conversion method as well as the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) and Electromagnetic Calorimeter detectors. The results extend the upper pT reach of the previous ALICE π0 measurements from 12 to 20 GeV/c and present the first measurement of η meson production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. Perturber's charge effect on Stark broadened hydrogen lines in helium plasmas

Abstract The Stark line profiles for hydrogen Ly α , Ly β , Hα, and Hβ are calculated using the computer simulation method for helium plasmas in the range of electron concentration from 1018 to 10 19 cm −3 at increasing temperature values kT from 7 to 10 eV , according to the experimental measurements in dense plasmas (Bochum experiment). The calculation was carried out at two limiting assumptions about the perturbers: (a) in the helium plasma only singly ionized helium ions occur, and (b) in the plasma the doubly ionized ions exclusively exist. PHELIX (Petawatt High Energy Laser for Heavy Ion Experiments) is a hybrid Ti:Sapphire / Nd:Glass laser system using large aperture amplifiers from the former Nova and Phebus laser systems at Livermore and Limeil, respectively, designed to offer pulse energies in access of 2 kJ and output power in the petawatt range. It is aiming mainly on combined experiments in plasma physics [2] and atomic physics [3] together with the GSI accelerator facility, and in preparation for the new FAIR facility for antiproton and ion research. On the regularity of critical and minimal sets of a free interface problem

We study a free interface problem of finding the optimal energy configuration for mixtures of two conducting materials with an additional perimeter penalization of the interface. We employ the regularity theory of linear elliptic equations to study the possible opening angles of Taylor cones and to give a different proof of a partial regularity result by Fan Hua Lin [Calc Var. Partial Differential Equations, 1993].

Hybrid quantum repeater for qudits

We present a "hybrid quantum repeater" protocol for the long-distance distribution of atomic entangled states beyond qubits. In our scheme, imperfect noisy entangled pairs of two qudits, i.e., two discrete-variable $d$-level systems, each of, in principle, arbitrary dimension $d$, are initially shared between the intermediate stations of the channel. Spatial separation of atomic states in a laser-cooled ion crystal

A laser cooled ion crystal containing several hundred Ca+ ions has been stored in a linear Paul trap. Cooling is provided by a red detund laser at the 4S1/2−4P1/2 resonance transition. A second laser serves for repumping of those ions which decay from the excited 4P1/2 level to the metastable 3D3/2 state. The ions can be additionally excited by a third laser to a long lived metastable 3D5/2 energy level which decouples them from the cooling laser radiation. The light pressure acting upon the laser cooled ions pushes them into the direction of the laser beam. Numerical study of the stability of the Peregrine solution

International audience; The Peregrine solution to the nonlinear Schrödinger equations is widely discussed as a model for rogue waves in deep water. We present here a detailed fully nonlinear numerical study of high accuracy of perturbations of the Peregrine solution as a solution to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations.We study localized and nonlocalized perturbations of the Peregrine solution in the linear and fully nonlinear setting. It is shown that the solution is unstable against all considered perturbations.
