Impact of internal curvature gradient on the power and accommodation of the crystalline lens

2017

Human crystalline lens has a layered, shell-like structure with the refractive index increasing from cortex to nucleus (gradient index or GRIN structure). Moreover, every iso-indicial layer has a certain curvature which also varies from cortex to nucleus, with a gradient of curvature (G). In the present manuscript, the role of G on the lens power is investigated along with its implications regarding the lens paradox (change of lens power with age) and intra-capsular accommodation mechanism (larger than expected changes of lens power during accommodation compared to a homogenous lens). To this end, a simplified formulation of paraxial lens power based on thin lens approximation is developed …

Local dimensions in Moran constructions

2015

We study the dimensional properties of Moran sets and Moran measures in doubling metric spaces. In particular, we consider local dimensions and $L^q$-dimensions. We generalize and extend several existing results in this area.

Mean-Field Game Modeling the Bandwagon Effect with Activation Costs

2015

This paper provides a mean-field game theoretic model of the bandwagon effect in social networks. This effect can be observed whenever individuals tend to align their own opinions to a mainstream opinion. The contribution is threefold. First, we describe the opinion propagation as a mean-field game with local interactions. Second, we establish mean-field equilibrium strategies in the case where the mainstream opinion is constant. Such strategies are shown to have a threshold structure. Third, we extend the use of threshold strategies to the case of time-varying mainstream opinion and study the evolution of the macroscopic system.

Observation of Poincar\'e-Andronov-Hopf bifurcation in cyclotron maser emission from plasma magnetic trap

2017

We report the first experimental evidence of a controlled transition from the generation of periodic bursts of electromagnetic emission into continuous wave regime of a cyclotron maser formed in magnetically confined non-equilibrium plasmas. The kinetic cyclotron instability of the extraordinary wave of weakly inhomogeneous magnetized plasma is driven by the anisotropic electron population resulting from electron cyclotron plasma heating in MHD-stable minimum-B open magnetic trap.

HITRAP: A Facility for Experiments with Trapped Highly Charged Ions

2001

HITRAP is a planned ion trap facility for capturing and cooling of highly charged ions produced at GSI in the heavy-ion complex of the UNILAC-SIS accelerators and the ESR storage ring. In this facility heavy highly charged ions up to uranium will be available as bare nuclei, hydrogenlike ions or few-electron systems at low temperatures. The trap for receiving and studying these ions is designed for operation at extremely high vacuum by cooling to cryogenic temperatures. The stored highly charged ions can be investigated in the trap itself or can be extracted from the trap at energies up to about 10 keV/q. The proposed physics experiments are collision studies with highly charged ions at wel…

Efficiency investigation of a negative hydrogen ion beam production with the use of the gasdynamic ECR plasma source

2020

Negative hydrogen ion sources are of great demand in modern physics as injectors into accelerators and drivers for neutral beam injectors for fusion devices. It has been shown earlier that the use of the gasdynamic ECR discharge provides the opportunity to extract up to 80 mA/cm2 of negative ion current density. We studied experimentally the volumetric negative hydrogen ion production and vacuum ultraviolet emission in a gasdynamic ECR discharge. The high-density plasma was sustained by the pulsed 37 GHz / 100 kW gyrotron radiation in a magnetic configuration consisting of two consecutive simple mirror traps. The future prospects of the volumetric H– source based on the gasdynamic ECR disch…

Development of a MeV ion beam lithography system in Jyväskylä

2007

A lithographic facility for writing patterns with ion beams from cyclotron beams is under development for the Jyväskylä cyclotron. Instead of focusing and deflecting the beam with electrostatic and magnetic fields a different approach is used. Here a small rectangular beam spot is defined by the shadow of a computer-controlled variable aperture in close proximity to the sample. This allows parallel exposure of rectangular pattern elements of 5–500 μm side with protons up to 6 MeV and heavy ions (20Ne, 85Kr) up to few 100 MeV. Here we present a short overview of the system under construction and development of the aperture design, which is a critical aspect for all ion beam lithography syste…

Three-dimensional features in burning plasmas

2019

A next major step in the research toward magnetic fusion energy production is to carry out experimental campaigns exploring regimes with relevant amount of fusion power. So far, the theoretical knowledge of the path toward a fusion burning plasma has been acquired mainly by performing numerical studies in 0 or 1-1.5 dimensions. Due to the marked anisotropy of magnetically confined plasmas, however, three-dimensional effects might play a role. In particular, the drastic change in magnetic topology associated with reconnecting modes on selected rational magnetic surfaces [1] may decrease the thermal electron conductivity parallel to the magnetic field lines, with a consequent impact on the el…

Electron heating, time evolution of bremsstrahlung and ion beam current in electron cyclotron resonance ion sources

2010

This thesis is a study of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasmas and their properties. The focus has been on time evolution studies of bremsstrahlung emission, ion beam current production and numerical studies of electron heating in ECRIS plasmas. The time scales for reaching steady state bremsstrahlung production at electron energies greater than 30 keV is shown to be on the order of several hundreds of milliseconds. The ion beam currents of different elements are shown to reach steady state before the bremsstrahlung production. It is also demonstrated that by tuning the RF pulse patterns, the so-called preglow transient ion beam currents can be utilized while the amount o…

Diagnostic techniques of minimum-B ECR ion source plasma instabilities.

2022

The performance of a minimum-B Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) is traditionally quantified by measuring the beam current and quality of the extracted ion beams of different charge state ions. The stability of the extracted ion beam currents has drawn more attention recently as the technology is pushing its limits toward higher ion charge states and beam intensities. The stability of the extracted beam is often compromised by plasma instabilities manifesting themselves as rapid oscillations of the beam currents in millisecond scale. This paper focuses on practical aspects of diagnostics techniques of the instabilities, showcases examples of instability-related diagnostics sig…
