Standardisation of elemental analytical techniques applied to provenance studies of archaeological ceramics: an inter laboratory calibration studyEle…
2002
Chemical analysis is a well-established procedure for the provenancing of archaeological ceramics. Various analytical techniques are routinely used and large amounts of data have been accumulated so far in data banks. However, in order to exchange results obtained by different laboratories, the respective analytical procedures need to be tested in terms of their inter-comparability. In this study, the schemes of analysis used in four laboratories that are involved in archaeological pottery studies on a routine basis were compared. The techniques investigated were neutron activation analysis (NAA), X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (I…
Finite-dimensional pseudo-bosons: a non-Hermitian version of the truncated harmonic oscillator
2018
We propose a deformed version of the commutation rule introduced in 1967 by Buchdahl to describe a particular model of the truncated harmonic oscillator. The rule we consider is defined on a $N$-dimensional Hilbert space $\Hil_N$, and produces two biorhogonal bases of $\Hil_N$ which are eigenstates of the Hamiltonians $h=\frac{1}{2}(q^2+p^2)$, and of its adjoint $h^\dagger$. Here $q$ and $p$ are non-Hermitian operators obeying $[q,p]=i(\1-Nk)$, where $k$ is a suitable orthogonal projection operator. These eigenstates are connected by ladder operators constructed out of $q$, $p$, $q^\dagger$ and $p^\dagger$. Some examples are discussed.
A no-go result for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator
2019
Abstract In this letter we show that it is not possible to set up a canonical quantization for the damped harmonic oscillator using the Bateman Lagrangian. In particular, we prove that no square integrable vacuum exists for the natural ladder operators of the system, and that the only vacua can be found as distributions. This implies that the procedure proposed by some authors is only formally correct, and requires a much deeper analysis to be made rigorous.
Column switching and high-performance liquid chromatography in the analysis of amitriptyline, nortriptyline and hydroxylated metabolites in human pla…
1992
A column-switching system for the direct injection of plasma or serum samples, followed by isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet detection, is described for the simultaneous quantitation of the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline, its demethylated metabolite nortriptyline and the E- and Z-isomers of 10-hydroxyamitriptyline and 10-hydroxynortriptyline. The method included adsorption of amitriptyline and metabolites on a reversed-phase C8 clean-up column (10 microns; 20 mm x 4.6 mm I.D.), washing of unwanted material to waste and, after on-line column-switching, separation on a cyanopropyl analytical column (5 microns; 250 mm x 4.6 mm I.D.). The compounds of inte…
Aetiology of community acquired pneumonia in Valencia, Spain: a multicentre prospective study.
1991
A year long multicentre prospective study was carried out in the Valencia region of Spain, to determine the cause of community acquired pneumonia. The study was based on 510 of 833 patients with pneumonia. Of these, 462 were admitted to hospital, where 31 patients died. A cause was established in only 281 cases--208 of bacterial, 60 of viral, and 13 of mixed infection. The most common microorganisms were Streptococcus pneumoniae (14.5%), Legionella sp (14%), Influenza virus (8%), and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (4%). There was a higher incidence of Legionella sp than in other studies.
Evolving Risk Factors for Mortality after Lung Transplantation over the Last 10 Years: Insights from a Single-Centre Database
2016
s S233 218 (82%) patients received pooled platelet transfusion -median (IQR) 1(1-2) U. 209 (79%) and 129 (49%) patients received fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate with a median (IQR) of 3(2-4) and 0(0-0) U respectively. Conclusion: Rate and volume of transfusion of blood products compare favourably with centres performing surgery off CPB or on ECMO. Requirement for ECMO particularly for BTT, but also PGD is associated with high transfusion requirements.
Urticaria and bacterial infections
2014
The association between urticaria and infectious diseases has been discussed for >100 years. However, a causal relationship with underlying or precipitating infection is difficult to establish. The purpose of this work was to perform a systematic analysis of the published cases of urticaria associated with bacterial infections. We give an umbrella breakdown of up-to-date systematic reviews and other important publications on the complex association of urticaria and bacterial infections. We did a Medline search, for English language articles published until January 2014, using the key words "urticaria" and "bacteria/bacterial disease"; a second analysis was performed in groups of bacteria an…
Measures with predetermined regularity and inhomogeneous self-similar sets
2016
We show that if $X$ is a uniformly perfect complete metric space satisfying the finite doubling property, then there exists a fully supported measure with lower regularity dimension as close to the lower dimension of $X$ as we wish. Furthermore, we show that, under the condensation open set condition, the lower dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set $E_C$ coincides with the lower dimension of the condensation set $C$, while the Assouad dimension of $E_C$ is the maximum of the Assouad dimensions of the corresponding self-similar set $E$ and the condensation set $C$. If the Assouad dimension of $C$ is strictly smaller than the Assouad dimension of $E$, then the upper regularity dimens…

Fractional Laplacians in bounded domains: Killed, reflected, censored, and taboo Lévy flights.
2018
The fractional Laplacian $(- \Delta)^{\alpha /2}$, $\alpha \in (0,2)$ has many equivalent (albeit formally different) realizations as a nonlocal generator of a family of $\alpha $-stable stochastic processes in $R^n$. On the other hand, if the process is to be restricted to a bounded domain, there are many inequivalent proposals for what a boundary-data respecting fractional Laplacian should actually be. This ambiguity holds true not only for each specific choice of the process behavior at the boundary (like e.g. absorbtion, reflection, conditioning or boundary taboos), but extends as well to its particular technical implementation (Dirchlet, Neumann, etc. problems). The inferred jump-type …
