Oasi di Slander
2021
Dust environment of an airless object: A phase space study with kinetic models
2016
Abstract The study of dust above the lunar surface is important for both science and technology. Dust particles are electrically charged due to impact of the solar radiation and the solar wind plasma and, therefore, they affect the plasma above the lunar surface. Dust is also a health hazard for crewed missions because micron and sub-micron sized dust particles can be toxic and harmful to the human body. Dust also causes malfunctions in mechanical devices and is therefore a risk for spacecraft and instruments on the lunar surface. Properties of dust particles above the lunar surface are not fully known. However, it can be stated that their large surface area to volume ratio due to their irr…
Three-Dimensional Simulations of Solar Wind Preconditioning and the 23 July 2012 Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection
2020
Predicting the large-scale eruptions from the solar corona and their propagation through interplanetary space remains an outstanding challenge in solar- and helio-physics research. In this article, we describe three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the inner heliosphere leading up to and including the extreme interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) of 23 July 2012, developed using the code PLUTO. The simulations are driven using the output of coronal models for Carrington rotations 2125 and 2126 and, given the uncertainties in the initial conditions, are able to reproduce an event of comparable magnitude to the 23 July ICME, with similar velocity and density profiles at 1 …
Banca del Germoplasma di Specie Spontanee (BGS-CT), Orto Botanico di Catania
2010
A search for beta-lactamase in chlamydiae, mycoplasmas, planctomycetes, and cyanelles: bacteria and bacterial descendants at different phylogenetic p…
2000
Bacteria from different phylogenetic positions such as chlamydiae, mycoplasmas, planctomycetes and also endosymbiotic murein-containing cyanelles were investigated for the production of beta-lactamases. No beta-lactamase activity was found in bacteria lacking murein such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Pirellula marina and Planctomyces maris. In the murein-containing cyanelles of Cyanophora paradoxa no beta-lactamase activity could be detected.
Drug Binding Properties of Tyrosine-Modified Human Serum Albumin
1978
Human serum albumin (HSA) has only a small number of specific binding sites for drugs. There are facts indicating that tyrosine residues may be involved in these binding sites. Thus we modified HSA with tetranitromethan, a reagent specific for tyrosine residues in proteins. As derived from an UV-absorption quotient three albumins with a degree of modification of two, five and eight residues per molecule were obtained. Only for the albumin with eight residues modified a small reduction of ordered secondary structure was found.

A High Sensitive Nested PCR for Toxoplasma gondii Detection in Animal and Food Samples
2013
Toxoplasma gondii is a major food and waterborne transmitted parasite world-wide. The tissues and meat samples of many warm blooded animals can contain tissues cysts from chronic toxoplasmosis. Water and vegetable can be contaminated by the parasitic oocysts shed through the feces of infected cats, representing the definitive host of the parasite. A sensitive PCR for Toxoplasma gondii detection is described. The first step amplified the region between the 28S and 18S rDNA in the closely related T. gondii and Neospora caninum; RFLP analysis distinguished the DNA from the two morphologically identical parasites. Although N. caninum is not involved in human transmission, so far, it is importan…
Effect of organic matrices on the determination of the trace element chemistry (Mg, Sr, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca) of aragonitic bivalve shells (<i>Arctica …
2010
The element chemistry of biogenic carbonates can provide important data on past environments. However, the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios as well as the Mg and Sr concentrations of biological carbonates, especially aragonitic bivalves often depart from apparent thermodynamic equilibrium. When measured in situ by means of LA-ICP-MS, the Mg concentration is often substantially enriched (two- to threefold) near the organic-rich, annual growth lines. To test the hypothesis that some organic components exert a major influence on the skeletal metal content, the element chemistry of different shell components (insoluble organic matrix, IOM; dissolved CaCO3 and soluble organics, SOM) of Arctica islandica w…
Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with herpes simplex virus type 2.
2012
Introduction. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare, acquired spectrum of skin conditions of an unknown etiology.Case Report. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent outbreaks of herpes simplex virus associated with the onset of red-to-brown maculopapules located predominantly in trunk in each recurrence. Positive serologies to herpes simplex virus type 2 were detected. Histopathological examination of one of the lesions was consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides chronica.Discussion. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare cutaneous entity of an unknown cause which includes different clinical presentations. A number of infectious agents have been implicated based on the clustering of …
