Radiation-induced changes in levels of selected proteins in peripheral blood serum of breast cancer patients as a potential triage biodosimeter for l…

2014

The threat of a large scale radiological emergency, where thousands of people may require fast biological dosimetry for the purpose of triage, makes it necessary to search for new, high throughput biological dosimeters. The authors tested an assay based on the quantitative analysis of selected proteins in peripheral blood serum. They were particularly interested in testing proteins that are specific to irradiation of skin, as these can be used in cases of partial body exposure. Candidate proteins were identified in an earlier study with mice, where skin of the animals was exposed to different doses of radiation and global expression of serum proteins was analyzed. Eight proteins were found,…

Determination of metal concentrations in certified plastic reference materials after small-size autoclave and microwave-assisted digestion followed w…

2017

Abstract The digestion methods for the determination of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Sb, Sn and Zn concentrations in plastic samples using microwave-assisted digestion (MW-AD) and small-size autoclave digestion was developed. The certified polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene certified reference materials were used in order to find digestion method working properly for several sample matrices. Efficiency of the digestion methods was evaluated by analyzing the residual carbon in digests by TOC analyzer. MW-AD using a mixture of 7 mL of HNO 3 and 3 mL of H 2 O 2 as a digestion solution resulted in excellent recoveries for As, Cd, Pb, Sb and Zn, and were in th…

Plasma response to amplitude modulation of the microwave power on a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source

2018

This paper reports the effects of sinusoidal microwave power Amplitude Modulation (AM) on the performance of Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources. The study was conducted on the 14 GHz ECR ion source ECR2 at the University of Jyväskylä. The klystron output was intentionally altered by a variable frequency sinusoidal amplitude modulation. The average microwave power 350 W was modulated between 530 W and 180 W from 0.011-25 kHz. The integrated x-ray energy, the mass analyzed beam current and the forward and reflected microwave power were measured. The energy integrated x-ray signal responded strongly with low frequency modulation and was no longer observable at approximately 2.2 kHz…

Maxillary lesion presenting as a first sign of multiple myeloma : case report

2007

Plasma cell neoplasia is a lymphoid neoplastic proliferation of B cells. This denomination encloses multiple myeloma (MM), solitary bone plasmacytoma and extramedullary plasmacytoma. MM consists of a clonal proliferation of plasma cells based in the bone marrow, with various degrees of differentiation. Neoplastic cells usually produce great amounts of monoclonal light or heavy chains of immunoglobulin that can be detected in serum or urine. The disease is more frequently in men and the average age at diagnosis is about 60 years. The diagnosis is established by blood and urine exams and medullary biopsy. Patients may present renal failure, bone pain, fatigue, recurrent infections and nervous…

High Output Heart Failure in Multiple Myeloma: Pathogenetic Considerations.

2022

The high output heart failure is a clinical condition in which the systemic congestion is associated to a high output state, and it can be observed in a non-negligible percentage of hematological diseases, particularly in multiple myeloma, a condition in which the risk of adverse cardiovascular events may increase, with a worse prognosis for patients. For this reason, though an accurate literature search, we provided in this review a complete overview of different pathogenetic mechanisms responsible for high output heart failure in multiple myeloma. Indeed, this clinical finding is present in the 8% of multiple myeloma patients, and it may be caused by artero-venous shunts, enhanced angioge…

Indirect chronology method employing rare earth elements to identify Sagunto Castle mortar construction periods

2017

A novel indirect chronology method has been developed to identify Sagunto Castle construction periods. The method is based on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements in mortars. Additionally, a no destructive geochemical analysis based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was employed for major elements determination. Collected chemical data were processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight any differences among the mortars belonging to different buildings and construction periods. The results show that PCA analysis permits to discriminate construction periods according to mortar sample REE …

Interaction of allopurinol with phenprocoumon in man.

1977

Conditions in two patients on long-term phenprocoumon (Marcumar®) treatment are reported who had signs of phenprocoumon overdosage when given simultaneously allopurinol. The determination of phenprocoumon plasma concentrations in one patient showed that phenprocoumon accumulates for several weeks during treatment with allopurinol. Signs of phenprocoumon overdosage thus can appear long time after starting allopurinol treatment.
