Calculation of phase diagrams not requiring the derivatives of the Gibbs energy for multinary mixtures

A method for the calculation of phase diagrams (tie lines and binodal, spinodal, critical points and their stability) based exclusively on the Gibbs energy of mixing with no need of its derivatives with respect to the composition variables is extended to multinary mixtures for any number of components. The mathematical description of the (K-1)-dimensional phase diagram of a K-component mixture is presented. The method is demonstrated for a quinternary blend of five polymers exhibiting a closed miscibility gap; all binary, ternary and quaternary subsystems are completely miscible. A supported titanium postmetallocene catalyst: Effect of selected conditions on ethylene polymerization

Ethylene polymerization with a titanium complex [N,N-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalicylideneiminato)titanium dichloride] immobilized on the magnesium support with the formula MgCl2(THF)0.32(Et2AlCl)0.36 was studied. In particular, the effects of polymerization temperature, monomer pressure, and polymerization time on the activity of the catalyst and on the polyethylene properties (molecular weight and its distribution, melting point, crystallinity, and bulk density) were evaluated. Natural compounds as light stabilizer for a starch-based biodegradable polymer

Abstract The photooxidation behavior of a commercial starch-based biodegradable polymer, i.e., new generation Mater-Bi, loaded with natural stabilizers was investigated in consideration for outdoor agricultural applications. The photooxidation behavior of the biodegradable films was monitored mainly by mechanical tests and spectroscopic analysis. Spatio-temporal distribution of microplastics in a Mediterranean river catchment: The importance of wastewater as an environmental pathway.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are considered to be ubiquitous contaminants in freshwater ecosystems, yet their sources and pathways at the river catchment scale need to be better determined. This study assessed MP (55–5000 µm) pollution in a Mediterranean river catchment (central Spain) and aimed to identify the importance of wastewater as an environmental pathway. We sampled treated and untreated wastewaters, and raw and digested sludge from five WWTPs during two seasons. Time–carbonyl groups equivalence in photo-oxidative aging of virgin/recycled polymer blends

AbstractThe photo-oxidation behaviour of polymers is strongly dependent on the initial amount of carbonyl groups along the chains. The growing use of recycled post-consumer polymers coming from products used outdoors and then photo-oxidised, both pure and blended with the same virgin polymer, gives rise to an unpredictable behaviour of weathering resistance of products made with these materials. The present work shows that the carbonyl group–exposure time curves can be shifted along the time axis to give a single generalised master plot. Abstract The series of titanasilsesquioxanes that differ in a way of binding to the transition metal ( via one, two or three oxygen atoms) and type of nonreactive substituents bonded to inorganic oxygen-silicon cage ( i -Bu, Ph, c -C 6 H 11 ) were prepared by reacting of TiCl 4 with 1 eqv. of the silsesquioxane ligand. Hyperbranched PEG by Random Copolymerization of Ethylene Oxide and Glycidol

The synthesis of hyperbranched poly(ethylene glycol) (hbPEG) in one step was realized by random copolymerization of ethylene oxide and glycidol, leading to a biocompatible, amorphous material with multiple hydroxyl functionalities. A series of copolymers with moderate polydispersity ($\overline {M} _{{\rm w}} /\overline {M} _{{\rm n}} $ < 1.8) was obtained with varying glycidol content (3-40 mol-%) and molecular weights up to 49 800 g mol(-1) . DFT Study of Ethylene and Propylene Copolymerization over a Heterogeneous Catalyst with a Coordinating Lewis Base

The copolymerization of ethylene and propylene over a heterogeneous Ti(III) catalyst containing tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a Lewis base and MgCl2 as a support has been studied by means of DFT. Two feasible models of active sites have been examined thoroughly, and one of them turned out to be favorable in terms of both catalytic activity and the microstructure of the resulting polymer. The external barriers of olefin insertion for this model range from 3.1 to 16.0 kcal/mol and are influenced by a variety of factors, such as the structure of the growing polymer chain and the nature of the incoming olefin as well as the orientation of the ligands around the titanium atom.
