The effect of Dextransulfate 500 on the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus infections in weanling mice

Intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of Dextran Sulfate (D.S.) 500 during a limited period of time influences the course of herpes simplex-virus-infections. D.S.500 was found to reduce the resistance of mice for some herpes simplex-virus strains (Len, L3-2s, Haase) if given between 16 hours before and 2 hours after i.p. infection. The decrease of resistance could be correlated with an increase of the virus content of liver, spleen, brain and spinal cord. Injection of herpes simplex-virus-specific immune serum counteracted the effect of D.S.500 on the course of infections. Ultrasound observation of tissue fluid infiltration causing stridor in a woman undergoing shoulder arthroscopy

Respiratory stridor developed rapidly during an interscalene brachial plexus block for shoulder arthroscopy in an obese woman. Extensive cervicothoracic edema due to tissue diffusion of the arthroscopic fluid was suspected. The outcome of patient after conservative management was satisfactory. We give a brief review of how this complication develops, the ultrasound findings, and briefly discuss similar cases.

Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is an uncommon condition that affects patients with secondary HPT after a successful kidney transplant. Bone alterations are the main consequences of this endocrine condition, including the development of an osteolytic lesion called brown tumour. This paper reports an unusual case of multiple brown tumours located in the maxilla and mandible in a 58-year-old renal transplant recipient, with tertiary HPT. Purpose: To provide the normal reference values of the Doppler flow of the pericallosal artery in relation to gestational age from 18 to 41 weeks of gestation. Materials and Methods: The pericallosal artery (PCA) was studied in 466 normal pregnancies. The pulsed Doppler evaluation of the pericallosal artery was done in A3 and A4 segments, and records from PI, RI and Vmax were studied.
