Objective and subjective controllability of painful stimuli are important factors in pain perception. The present study investigated direct and indirect effects of uncontrollability on perceived pain intensity in humans. Forty-eight healthy male volunteers participated in a laboratory experiment using a reaction time paradigm to induce controllable or uncontrollable feedback conditions in two randomly selected groups. An electronic search was performed for data published from 2009 to 2014 by using PubMed, Ovid/MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. The primary search terms were used in combination. Eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of desensitizing agents in terms of reducing dentin hypersensitivity. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) recording is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure for the evaluation of the cerebral collateral flow in patients, in whom therapeutic ligation or resection of the common and/or internal carotid artery is planned. Patients are first examined under resting conditions, and then under manual compression of the ipsilateral carotid artery. Since January 1989, 31 ENT and neurosurgical patients have been examined. In all patients an immediate decrease in flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (mca) of about 25% to 90% was recorded.
