Highly sensitive superconducting circuits at ∼700 kHz with tunable quality factors for image-current detection of single trapped antiprotons
2016
We developed highly-sensitive image-current detection systems based on superconducting toroidal coils and ultra-low noise amplifiers for non-destructive measurements of the axial frequencies (550$\sim$800$\,$kHz) of single antiprotons stored in a cryogenic multi-Penning-trap system. The unloaded superconducting tuned circuits show quality factors of up to 500$\,$000, which corresponds to a factor of 10 improvement compared to our previously used solenoidal designs. Connected to ultra-low noise amplifiers and the trap system, signal-to-noise-ratios of 30$\,$dB at quality factors of > 20$\,$000 are achieved. In addition, we have developed a superconducting switch which allows continuous tu…
Frequency doubling in surface periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides: Competing effects
2007
We fabricated α-phase pro ton-exchanged (PE) lithium niobate (LN) channel waveguides quasi phase-matched (QPM) via surface periodic poling (SPP) and carried out the first experimental demonstration of second harmonic generation (SHG) in such devices.[1] Experiments were performed by employing an optical parametric amplifier/oscillator producing 25 ps pulses in the range 1.1-1.6 μm with a line-width less than 2cm−1 and a repetition rate of 10Hz. SHG measurements were performed either at a fixed wavelength by varying the fundamental frequency (FF) input power or by scanning the FF wavelength, ratioing the second harmonic (SH) output to the FF input to obtain the conversion efficiency. By repe…
Chromatin modifiers and recombination factors promote a telomere fold-back structure, that is lost during replicative senescence.
2020
Telomeres have the ability to adopt a lariat conformation and hence, engage in long and short distance intra-chromosome interactions. Budding yeast telomeres were proposed to fold back into subtelomeric regions, but a robust assay to quantitatively characterize this structure has been lacking. Therefore, it is not well understood how the interactions between telomeres and non-telomeric regions are established and regulated. We employ a telomere chromosome conformation capture (Telo-3C) approach to directly analyze telomere folding and its maintenance in S. cerevisiae. We identify the histone modifiers Sir2, Sin3 and Set2 as critical regulators for telomere folding, which suggests that a dis…
Several Derivatives of 6-(Tert-Butyl)-4H-Pyran-4-Ylidene Malononitrile with Different Amorphous Phase Promoting Substituents for Light-Amplification …
2019
A series of glassy 6-(tert-butyl)-4H-pyran-4-ylidene malononitrile (DCM) derivatives with covalently attached amorphous state promoting bulky 1,1,1-triphenylmethyl (trityl) moieties through several chemical design approaches have been synthesized and investigated for suitability in organic solid state laser applications. Results showed that the bonding type of such functional groups had a considerable influence on glass structure forming dye thermal properties and a slight influence on their optical properties. Thermal stability up to 346 °C was achieved with glass transitions in the range from 39 to 138 °C. Incorporation of bulky triphenyl substituents via ester groups showed remarkable am…
A Controllable Text Simplification System for the Italian Language
2021
Text simplification is a non-trivial task that aims at reducing the linguistic complexity of written texts. Researchers have studied the problem by proposing new methodologies for addressing the English language, but other languages, like the Italian one, are almost unexplored. In this paper, we give a contribution to the enhancement of the Automated Text Simplification research by presenting a deep learning-based system, inspired by a state of the art system for the English language, capable of simplifying Italian texts. The system has been trained and tested by leveraging the Italian version of Newsela; it has shown promising results by achieving a SARI value of 30.17.
Intraspecific diversity of Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus sakei, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides associated with vacuum…
2006
The intraspecific diversity of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus sakei, and Lactobacillus plantarum was analyzed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) PCR with universal primers M13 and T3. The study included 100 reference strains and 210 isolates recovered from two vacuum-packed Spanish meat products, fiambre de magro adobado and morcilla, previously identified by rDNA-restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles. The RAPD-M13 profiles identified isolates at species level in L. plantarum and L. mesenteroides, while RAPD-T3 provided profiles in L. sakei. The combination of RAPD-M13 and RAPD-T3 fingerprints revealed a total of 17 profiles in L. mese…

Current-Based Measurement Technique for High Sensitivity Detection of Resistive Bridges With External Balancing Through Control Voltages
2017
We present a novel approach based on differential measurements of dc currents with very high sensitivity suitable for the detection of very small variations of resistors in Wheatstone full-bridge configurations. External control voltages allow for the compensation of the bridge unbalancing avoiding the need of changing its elements so making the solution suitable for integrated sensor systems. The proposed current-based measurement technique has been implemented through three different circuits, in transimpedance configuration and without the use of any further amplification stage, employing only two active blocks that allow for a very high integration level. The main characteristics of the…
Fractional Modeling of the AC Large-Signal Frequency Response in Magnetoresistive Current Sensors
2013
Fractional calculus is considered when derivatives and integrals of non-integer order are applied over a specific function. In the electrical and electronic domain, the transfer function dependence of a fractional filter not only by the filter order n, but additionally, of the fractional order α is an example of a great number of systems where its input-output behavior could be more exactly modeled by a fractional behavior. Following this aim, the present work shows the experimental ac large-signal frequency response of a family of electrical current sensors based in different spintronic conduction mechanisms. Using an ac characterization set-up the sensor transimpedance function is obtain…
A new set of DNA macrochips for the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae: features and uses
2004
The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been widely used for the implementation of DNA chip technologies. For this reason and due to the extensive use of this organism for basic and applied studies, yeast DNA chips are being used by many laboratories for expression or genomic analyses. While membrane arrays (macroarrays) offer several advantages, for many laboratories they are not affordable. Here we report that a cluster of four Spanish molecular-biology yeast laboratories, with relatively small budgets, have developed a complete set of probes for the genome of S. cerevisiae. These have been used to produce a new type of macroarray on a nylon surface. The macroarrays have been evaluated and…
