Powdery mildew resistance genes in Latvian barley varieties

Thirty-three Latvian spring barley varieties and breeding lines and 90individual progenies from these were tested at the seedling stage for their reaction to a maximum 37 isolates of Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei. Eighteen varieties were composed of two or three lines with different resistance. TwelveMl powdery mildew resistance genes(a1, a6, a7, a8, a9, a12, a13, at, g, k1, (Kr) and La) and four Ml genes closely linked to the Mla locus [a(Al2), a(No3), a(Em2) and a(Ru3)] were found. Mla8, Mlg and Mlk1 were the most frequent genes that occurred among the tested genotypes. The results confirm the pedigrees of all genotypes apart from cv. Agra and the breeding line L-215.
A new synonym and a new combination in Stipa aliena Keng (Poaceae: Stipa sect. Regelia)

Stipa section Regelia comprises three species occurring in mountainous areas of Central Asia. One of them, S. smithii , was described by Martinovský in 1970, but the taxon has been overlooked in later taxonomical studies. The species was described with two varieties, var. smithii and var. macrocarpa . As a result of our taxonomical studies, we find the typical variety of the taxon to be conspecific with Stipa aliena , and propose that the second one be recognized as Stipa aliena var. macrocarpa comb. nov. Remarks on species belonging to section Regelia and micromorphological patterns of their lemma morphologies are discussed. A key to species close to S. aliena is provided.
The effect of host mycorrhizal status on host plant-parasitic plant interactions

Two pot experiments were conducted to examine three-level interactions between host plants, mycorrhizal fungi and parasitic plants. In a greenhouse experiment, Poa annua plants were grown in the presence or absence of an AM fungus (either Glomus lamellosum V43a or G. mosseae BEG29) and in the presence or absence of a root hemiparasitic plant (Odontites vulgaris). In a laboratory experiment, mycorrhizal infection (Glomus claroideum BEG31) of Trifolium pratense host plants (mycorrhizal versus non-mycorrhizal) was combined with hemiparasite infection (Rhinanthus serotinus) of the host (parasitized versus non-parasitized). Arising from annual variation in parasitic plant population densities, substantial yearly changes may occur in the parasitic load of an individual perennial host. We conducted two two-year greenhouse pot experiments to examine the effects of varying intensities and duration of infection by an annual root hemiparasitic plant, Rhinanthus serotinus, on the growth and reproduction of its perennial host grass, Agrostis capillaris. Stipa klimesii (Poaceae), a new species from Western Himalayas (India)

Stipa klimesii sp. nov. from the Western Himalayas (India: Ladakh) and its variety S. klimesii var. pubescens var. nov. are described. The new species is similar to S. roborowskyi but differs by its longer anthecium, longer ligules of vegetative shoots, longer hairs on seta and shorter awns. Stipa klimesii is also similar to S. purpurea, but differs by longer ligules of vegetative shoots, shorter awns, slightly shorter hairs on seta and by the character of the panicle, which is compressed and with straight branches in S. klimesii vs. lax and with flexuous branches in S. purpurea. The typification of the name Cenchrus setaceus (Forsskål) Morrone (Poaceae) is discussed, and a lectotype is designated. Cenchrus setaceus is native to northeastern Africa, and cultivated as an ornamental plant in some parts of the world. It is an invasive species in a wide range of natural habitats worldwide, competing strongly with the native flora.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery in conventional extracorporeal circulation (CECC), with an incidence of 15–50%. The POAF pathophysiology is not known, and no blood biomarkers exist. However, an association between increased ferritin levels and increased AF risk, has been demonstrated. Based on such evidence, here, we evaluated the effectiveness of ferritin and other haematological parameters as POAF risk biomarkers in patients subjected to cardiac surgery.
