BAG3 and friends: co-chaperones in selective autophagy during aging and disease.

There is a reciprocal change in the expression of two members of the BAG (Bcl-2-associated athanogen) family, BAG1 and BAG3, during cellular aging and under acute stress ("BAG1-BAG3-switch"). BAG3 was recently described as a mediator of a novel macroautophagy pathway that uses the specificity of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) to misfolded proteins and also involves other protein partners, such as HSPB8. Also crucial for induction and execution of autophagy are sequestosome-1/p62 (SQSTM1/p62) and LC3, an autophagosome-associated protein. Extracellular Domains of the Bradykinin B2 Receptor Involved in Ligand Binding and Agonist Sensing Defined by Anti-peptide Antibodies

Many of the physiological functions of bradykinin are mediated via the B2 receptor. Little is known about binding sites for bradykinin on the receptor. Therefore, antisera against peptides derived from the putative extracellular domains of the B2 receptor were raised. The antibodies strongly reacted with their corresponding antigens and cross-reacted both with the denatured and the native B2 receptor. Subtype-Specific Desensitization of Human Endothelin ETA and ETB Receptors Reflects Differential Receptor Phosphorylation

Endothelins regulate blood pressure in mammals through G protein-coupled receptors. Two receptor subtypes, ETA and ETB, exist which differ by their agonist profiles. Here we show subtype-specific differences in the inactivation of these endothelin receptors. Using a modified inositol phosphate accumulation assay, we found that stimulation of ETA by endothelin-1 results in sustained activation of the subtype, retaining >30% of its initial activity even 20 min after agonist administration, whereas the ETB rapidly deactivated after agonist stimulation, losing >80% of its initial activity within 5 min after endothelin application. First generation of insect-protected transgenic corn (Bt-corn) was based on the expression of Cry1Ab or Cry1Fa proteins. Currently, the trend is the combination of two or more genes expressing proteins that bind to different targets. In addition to broadening the spectrum of action, this strategy helps to delay the evolution of resistance in exposed insect populations. One of such examples is the combination of Cry1A.105 with Cry1Fa and Cry2Ab to control O. nubilalis and S. frugiperda. Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands.
