On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes

2006

The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then, sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio, IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN mode…

Distinct immune evasion in APOBEC-enriched, HPV-negative HNSCC

2019

Immune checkpoint inhibition leads to response in some patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Robust biomarkers are lacking to date. We analyzed viral status, gene expression signatures, mutational load and mutational signatures in whole exome and RNA-sequencing data of the HNSCC TCGA dataset (N = 496) and a validation set (DKTK MASTER cohort, N = 10). Public single-cell gene expression data from 17 HPV-negative HNSCC were separately re-analyzed. APOBEC3-associated TCW motif mutations but not total single nucleotide variant burden were significantly associated with inflammation. This association was restricted to HPV-negative HNSCC samples. An APOBEC-enriched, HPV-nega…

Search for neutrino emission from gamma-ray flaring blazars with the ANTARES telescope

2012

The ANTARES telescope observes a full hemisphere of the sky all the time with a duty cycle close to 100%. This makes it well suited for an extensive observation of neutrinos produced in astrophysical transient sources. In the surrounding medium of blazars, i.e. active galactic nuclei with their jets pointing almost directly towards the observer, neutrinos may be produced together with gamma-rays by hadronic interactions, so a strong correlation between neutrinos and gamma-rays emissions is expected. The time variability information of the studied source can be obtained by the gamma-ray light curves measured by the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi satellite. If the expected neutrino flux ob…

Principal Poincar\'e Pontryagin Function associated to some families of Morse real polynomials

2014

It is known that the Principal Poincar\'e Pontryagin Function is generically an Abelian integral. We give a sufficient condition on monodromy to ensure that it is an Abelian integral also in non generic cases. In non generic cases it is an iterated integral. Uribe [17, 18] gives in a special case a precise description of the Principal Poincar\'e Pontryagin Function, an iterated integral of length at most 2, involving logarithmic functions with only one ramification at a point at infinity. We extend this result to some non isodromic families of real Morse polynomials.

An Arakelov inequality in characteristic p and upper bound of p-rank zero locus

2008

In this paper we show an Arakelov inequality for semi-stable families of algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 1$ over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer maps. We apply this inequality to obtain an upper bound of the number of algebraic curves of $p-$rank zero in a semi-stable family over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer map in terms of the genus of a general closed fiber, the genus of the base curve and the number of singular fibres. An extension of the above results to smooth families of Abelian varieties over $k$ with $W_2$-lifting assumption is also included.

Irradiation effects on the OH-related infrared absorption band in synthetic wet silica.

2007

The effects of b-irradiation on the OH-related infrared (IR) absorption band in synthetic wet silica samples have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Depending on the accumulated doses, b-irradiation affects different zones of the IR composite band at about 3670 cm 1 , assigned to the OH stretching modes of silanol groups. These modifications are independent of the original OH content. The results are discussed considering possible radiation-induced changes of the silanol bonding configuration and of the glass network. These are monitored by revealing the IR band a 2260 cm 1 , which is related to the distribution of Si–O–Si bond angle. We have identified the existence of…

Accuracy assessment and position correction for low-cost non-differential GPS as applied on an industrial peat bog

1999

A low-cost, non-differentially corrected hand-held GPS receiver was tested on an industrial peat production bog. A correction procedure (‘pseudo-differential correction’) was derived that corrected data points to the nearest position on a line defining the centre of each 15-m wide field. The result was a corrected log of track points for each field for all points lying along the field. It was found that the mean orthogonal distance from a field centreline was linearly correlated with mean uncorrected GPS data error (r 2 0.99) such that as GPS error increased so the accuracy obtained by correction decreased. For a signal with a mean uncorrected error of 30 m it was possible to reduce the err…

3D reconstruction of hot metallic surfaces for industrial part characterization

2009

During industrial forging of big hot metallic shells, it is necessary to regularly measure the dimensions of the parts, especially the inner and outer diameters and the thickness of the walls, in order to decide when to stop the forging process. The inner and outer diameters of the shells range from 4 to 6 meters and to measure them a large ruler is placed horizontally at the end of the shell. Two blacksmiths standing on each side of the ruler at about ten meters from it visually reads the graduations on the ruler in order to determine the inner and outer diameters from which the thickness of the wall is determined. This operation is carried out several times during a forging process and it…

Automatic detection and classification of retinal vascular landmarks

2014

The main contribution of this paper is introducing a method to distinguish between different landmarks of the retina: bifurcations and crossings. The methodology may help in differentiating between arteries and veins and is useful in identifying diseases and other special pathologies, too. The method does not need any special skills, thus it can be assimilated to an automatic way for pinpointing landmarks; moreover it gives good responses for very small vessels. A skeletonized representation, taken out from the segmented binary image (obtained through a preprocessing step), is used to identify pixels with three or more neighbors. Then, the junction points are classified into bifurcations or…
