Abstract Case report A 36-year-old man went to the emergency department the day after exposure to a laser pointer. Funduscopy revealed dispersed macular pigment alterations, and optical coherence tomography showed a disruption of the retinal layers. The visual acuity was counting fingers in both eyes. Nine months later, optical coherence tomography angiography showed a rarefaction in the choriocapillaris vascular flow in the area of the laser injuries. Discussion The retinal layer mainly damaged by the laser injury was the retinal pigment epithelium. Halloysite/Keratin Nanocomposite for Human Hair Photoprotection Coating

We propose a novel keratin treatment of human hair by its aqueous mixtures with natural halloysite clay nanotubes. The loaded clay nanotubes together with free keratin produce micrometer-thick protective coating on hair. First, colloidal and structural properties of halloysite/keratin dispersions and the nanotube loaded with this protein were investigated. Above the keratin isoelectric point (pH = 4), the protein adsorption into the positive halloysite lumen is favored because of the electrostatic attractions. Identification of two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopamine D4 receptor gene

We report two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopaine D4 receptor gene. The two polymorphisms are characterized by single base pair substitutions, namely a G-->C transversion changing codon 11 from GGG (encoding Gly) to CGG (encoding Arg) and a C-->T transition in position -11 upstream from the start codon. The Arg11 variant occurs at a frequency of about 1% and the C-->T transition at a frequency of about 7% in German control subjects (n = 148). Objective Temozolomide has shown a significant anti-proliferative activity on adrenocortical cancer (ACC) cells in vitro. Design On the basis of these results the drug was prescribed as second/third line in advanced metastatic ACC patients in four referral centers in Italy. Cowden disease, also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome, is a rare disease inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which confers a high risk of developing breast and thyroid carcinomas. Mutations in PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene located on chromosome 10q23, have been identified in patients with Cowden disease. In this work, the direct sequencing of all coding regions of the PTEN gene led us to the identification of N48K, a new germline PTEN missense mutation, in a patient suffering from Cowden disease.
