Scattering and Depolarization in a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Cell

An imaging polarimeter in transmission has been used to explore the effects of scatter and depolarization induced by a polymer dispersed liquid crystal cell. The experiment was carried out for three visible wavelengths. Both a directional and a scattered component can be distinguished in the light transmitted by this material. Whereas the directional component increased with voltage, the scattered portion decreased. This was a common behaviour for all three wavelengths. Designing the properties of dispersion-flattened photonic crystal fibers

We present a systematic study of group-velocity-dispersion properties in photonic crystal fibers (PCF's). This analysis includes a thorough description of the dependence of the fiber geometrical dispersion on the structural parameters of a PCF. The interplay between material dispersion and geometrical dispersion allows us to established a well-defined procedure to design specific predetermined dispersion profiles. We focus on flattened, or even ultraflattened, dispersion behaviors both in the telecommunication window (around 1.55 microm) and in the Ti-Za laser wavelength range (around 0.8 microm}. Polarization backward-wave four-wave mixing in BaTiO_3:Fe using the photovoltaic effect

We report the first study to our knowledge of polarization backward-wave four-wave mixing in a BaTiO3:Fe crystal and compare the results of our measurements with the calculations performed within the model of photovoltaic charge transport. Two identically polarized pump waves and one orthogonally polarized signal wave are sent to a sample in a plane normal to the crystal’s C axis; a phase-conjugate wave with polarization identical to that of the signal wave is generated. With a 2-mm-thick sample a phase-conjugate reflectivity Rpc≈0.01 is reached; for a 1-cm-thick sample, amplified reflection should be possible.

Dihedron dielectric loaded surface plasmon athermal polarization converter.

We investigate numerically a novel plasmonic polarization converter relying on the excitation of a so-called dihedron dielectric loaded plasmon polariton. The dihedron dielectric loaded waveguide consists of a dielectric ridge implemented at the inner corner of a metal-coated dielectric step. For a dielectric ridge with a square cross section, the plasmon polariton modes supported by each side of the metallized step hybridize to create supermodes with crossed polarizations. 1/f noise in streaming electrification

The paper presents the measurement results of the noise generated by static electricity. The tests were performed in the spinning-disk system. Insulation liquid (transformer oil) was used for electrostatic charge generation. The element measured was the current flowing to the disk surface. A stochastic term is present in the current. Existance of this term is due to the complex chemical constitution of the oil. A relaxation of the polar molecules has inertial character. The spreading of a large amount of the relaxation phenomena can lead to forming a compounded spectrum close in shape to 1/f noise. Electronic polarizability of small sodium clusters.

Abstract : Small sodium clusters consisting of 1 to 40 atoms are described as spheres of interacting homogeneous electron gas (jellium model). The static electronic polarizability is calculated using self consistent density functional methods. An excellent agreement with recent experimental results is observed.

Optical-field induced volume- and surface-relief formation phenomenon in thin films of vitreous chalcogenide semiconductors

In this report the study of direct recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous chalcogenide thin (2.5-5μm) films is presented by three different recording setups. Recording was performed on As2S3 by 532nm wavelength laser light. Additionally the evolution of surface relief in dependence from the recording time and polarization has been investigated in detail. The mechanism of the direct recording of surface relief on amorphous chalcogenide films based on the photo-induced plasticity has been discussed.

Asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation through a double grating.

We report on experimental evidence of unidirectional transmission of terahertz waves through a pair of metallic gratings with different periods. The gratings are optimized for a broadband transmission in one direction, accompanied with a high extinction rate in the opposite direction. In contrast to previous studies, we show that the zero-order nonreciprocity cannot be achieved. Nonetheless, we confirm that the structure can be used successfully as an asymmetric filter.

Off-Resonant Optical Excitation of Gold Nanorods: Nanoscale Imprint of Polarization Surface Charge Distribution

International audience; We report on the nanoscale optical characterization of gold nanorods irradiated out of their plasmonic resonance. Our approach is based on the reticulation of a photopolymerizable formulation locally triggered by enhanced electromagnetic fields. The tiny local field enhancement stems from the surface polarization charges associated with the electric field discontinuity at the metal/dielectric interface. This allows us to get a nanoscale signature of the spatial distribution of the surface charge density in metallic nanoparticles irradiated off-resonance.

Atomic layer deposition of ferroelectric LiNbO3

The ferroelectric and electro-optical properties of LiNbO3 make it an important material for current and future applications. It has also been suggested as a possible lead-free replacement for present PZT-devices. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique offers controlled deposition of films at an industrial scale and thus becomes an interesting tool for growth of LiNbO3. We here report on ALD deposition of LiNbO3 using lithium silylamide and niobium ethoxide as precursors, thereby providing good control of cation stoichiometry and films with low impurity levels of silicon.
