Presacral Myelolipoma

2014

Many reports have described adrenal myelolipomas but there have been only a few reports of extra-adrenal myelolipomas. We describe a 74-year-old woman who came to our observa- tion for MRI of the lumbar spine for typical lumbar back pain. In addition to signs of mild scoliosis and spondylo disc arthrosis, MR imaging revealed a presacral mass showing a heterogeneously high signal in all pulse sequences and almost completely suppressed on inversion recovery sequences for fat tissue. CT imaging confirmed the fatty nature of the lesion and no signs of bone involvement. These findings were most consistent with a diagnosis of a rare presacral myelolipoma as confirmed at histopathologic analysis. …

The magnesium global network (MaGNet) to promote research on magnesium in diseases focusing on covid-19

2021

When the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic began in early 2020, the global magnesium researcher community came together and noted the striking similarities between COVID-19 risk factors and conditions associated with magnesium deficit state in humans, reasoning that magnesium deficiency could worsen the course of COVID-19 [1-4]. This prompted establishment of a worldwide collaborative network with regular virtual meetings to brainstorm the associations between magnesium and COVID-19. We hypothesize that magnesium deficiency, a common but mostly unrecognized state in modern global societies, could be an important component of the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Consequently, restoring the …

Long-term effects of soil management on ecosystem services and soil loss estimation in olive grove top soils

2016

Soil management has important effects on soil properties, runoff, soil losses and soil quality. Traditional olive grove (OG) management is based on reduced tree density, canopy size shaped by pruning and weed control by ploughing. In addition, over the last several decades, herbicide use has been introduced into conventional OG management. These management strategies cause the soil surface to be almost bare and subsequently high erosion rates take place. To avoid these high erosion rates several soil management strategies can be applied. In this study, three strategies were assessed in OG with conventional tillage in three plots of 1. ha each. Soil properties were measured and soil erosion …

Management of Renal Angiomyolipoma: A Report of 14 Cases and Review of the Literature

1994

14 patients with renal angiomyolipoma are presented. Two of them had tuberous sclerosis (TS) with synchronous bilateral and multiple tumors. Two other patients without TS also had multiple tumors in 1 kidney. More than half the patients were symptomatic (n = 8), 2 of them with spontaneous rupture of the tumor. Misdiagnosis, spontaneous rupture and tumor growth can be prevented by utilizing conservative, organ-sparing techniques. In cases of solitary kidneys with large and/or hemorrhagic angiomyolipoma, superselective arterial embolization is indicated.

SEVERE STREPTOCOCCUS PYOGENES SURGICAL SITE INFECTION AFTER INGUINAL LIPOMA REMOVAL

2019

Surgical site infections (SSI) are a common cause of health care-associated infections. They are localized in the surgical incision site and can lead to deep tissues spreading. Among the wide spectrum of SSIs , we will consider specifically group A streptococcus cellulitis. This kind of infection can have a negative evolution and result in necrotizing fasciitis (NF), previously known as streptococcal gangrene. The term NF indicates a rare necrotizing infection involving any of the soft tissue layers that still have a high mortality rate from 7% to 76%. An early diagnosis and urgent treatment are key to ensuring the safety of the patients’ life. A 64-year-old man underwent a complete surgica…

Novel triplet of flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of the snail, Helix pomatia.

2012

The anatomy of three novel flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of Helix pomatia is described. The muscles originate from the ventral side of the sensory pad and are anchored at different sites in the base of the tentacle stem. The muscles span the tentacle and always take the length of the stem which depends on the rate of tentacle protrusion indicating that the muscles are both contractile and extremely stretchable. The three anchoring points at the base of the stem determine three space axes along which the contraction of a muscle or the synchronous contraction of the muscles can move the tentacle in space.

Temporal dynamic of biofilms enhances the settlement of the central-Mediterranean reef-builder Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859).

2021

Abstract Research on marine invertebrate settlement provides baseline knowledge for restoration technique implementation, especially for biogenic engineers with limited dispersion ability. Previously, we determined that the maturity of a biofilm strongly enhances the settlement of the vermetid reef-builder Dendropoma cristatum. To elucidate settlement-related biofilm features, here we analyse the structure and composition of marine biofilms over time, through microscopic observations, eukaryotic and prokaryotic fingerprinting analyses and 16S rDNA Illumina sequencing. The vermetid settlement temporal increase matched with the higher biofilm coverage on the substratum and the reduction of th…

Respirometric Index and Biogas Potential of Different Foods and Agricultural Discarded Biomass

2016

The biological stability of biomass is an important parameter for treatment plant design, process control or compost use. Measuring the biological reactivity of waste with the help of indicators such as respirometric indexes (RI) becomes an important tool to prevent the significant environmental impact of biodegradable wastes in accordance with European legislation. The aim of this paper is to show the importance of the RI technique as a tool to establish further uses of biomass such as fertilizer or biogas. The respirometric process length for different types of biomass (grape marc, apple pomace and olive pomace) was quantified. Higher moisture content seemed to favor the biological activi…

Green and Quick Extraction of Stable Biophenol-Rich Red Extracts from Grape Processing Waste

2021

The extraction of grape processing waste (wine pomace) via microwave-hydrodiffusion and gravity (MHG) from three different cultivars grown in Sicily (Syrah, Perricone and Nero d’Avola) rapidly affords aqueous extracts highly concentrated in valued biophenols including flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids. The method does not employ organic solvent, acid or base and does not require grinding or freeze drying of the wine pomace nor separation of the grape skins from seeds and stem. All the extracts have a pronounced stability as shown by their red-violet color fully retained after storage for more than a year (15 months) in freezer under air. Concentrations of phenolics up to…
