Influence of Demographic and Lifestyle Variables on Plasma Magnesium Concentrations and Their Associations with Cardiovascular Risk Factors in a Medi…
2020
Several studies have shown that a low magnesium (Mg) intake in the diet is associated with greater cardiovascular risk and greater risk of diabetes. However, the results are not consistent in all populations. To minimize the biases derived from diet measurement, more objective biomarkers of magnesium status have been proposed. Although there is still no ideal biomarker for Mg, several studies have shown that plasma Mg concentrations could be a relatively acceptable biomarker for cardiovascular risk assessment. However, further studies are required to better characterize this marker in different populations. Our aim was to analyze the association between plasma Mg concentrations (measured th…

¿Constructores de Mercado y de Estado? A propósito del Campomanes de V. Llombart
1994
This article seeks to discuss some of the conclusions V. Llombart’s study arrives at about the figure and the meaning of the count of Campomanes in the context of absolutism during the second half of the XVIIIth century. More specifically, it calls in question the idea of an action led by a reforming possibilism, half way between the non-enlightenment and the revolution, which would permit, besides, to establish a doubtful line of continuity among some of the reforms of the second half of the century and the plans of Cádiz. It proposes, on the contrary, to reintroduce an interpretative logic not so attached to the schemes of “market” and “state”.
Characterization of conservatively resected renal tumors using automated image analysis DNA cytometry
1991
The DNA histograms of 57 conservatively resected renal tumors were studied using automated image analysis DNA cytometry (Leytas II). Forty-nine of the analyzed tumors were renal cell carcinomas, six were oncocytomas, one was an angiomyolipoma, and one was a renal cell adenoma. On the basis of their DNA histograms, diploid, tetraploid, and aneuploid tumors could be distinguished. Aneuploid tumors could be subtyped further according to the DNA content of the stem cell line as hyperdiploid, hypertriploid, or hypertetraploid. Eight of the tumors were characterized by a combination of diploid and hypertriploid stem cell lines. During a mean follow-up of 5 years, only the two patients with a pure…
Long-chain fatty alcohols from pomace olive oil modulate the release of proinflammatory mediators
2009
Pomace olive oil is a by-product of olive oil extraction that is traditionally produced and consumed in Spain. The nonglyceride matter of this oil is a good source of interesting minor compounds, like long-chain fatty alcohols, which are present free or as part of waxes. In the present study, long-chain fatty alcohols were isolated from the nonglyceride fraction of pomace olive oil, and the composition was identified and quantified. The major components of long-chain fatty alcohols were tetracosanol, hexacosanol and octacosanol. We investigated the ability of long-chain fatty alcohols from pomace olive oil to inhibit the release of different proinflammatory mediators in vitro by cells invol…
Determination of Olive Oil Parameters by Near Infrared Spectrometry
2010
Publisher Summary Near infrared (NIR) covers the region between 780 and 2500 nm, and based on the absorption, transmission or reflection of the light, NIR spectroscopy provides a fast and non-destructive technique which is very useful for the simultaneous determination of several compounds in the same sample. Food NIR spectra comprise broad bands corresponding to overtones and combinations of vibrational modes involving C–H, O–H, and N–H chemical bonds, providing a great amount of information which properly treated by chemometrics is useful for classification and for the quantification of many parameters. The olive oil extraction process starts in the harvesting and transport of olive fruit…
Consequences of food-attraction conditioning in Helix: a behavioral and electrophysiological study
1996
Food-attraction conditioning is a learning phenomenon by which adult Helix pomatia acquire the ability to locate food through exposure to that particular food. Food-conditioned snails can be distinguished from ‘naive’ snails during their approach to food. ‘Naive’ snails keep their tentacles upright — whereas ‘food-conditioned’ animals bend the tentacles down-ward, in a horizontal orientation, pointed in the direction of the food.
Abalone (Haliotis tuberculata) hemocyanin type 1 (HtH1) . Organization of the = 400 kDa subunit, and amino acid sequence of its functional units f, g…
1999
We have identified two separate hemocyanin types (HtH1 and HtH2) in the European abalone Haliotis tuberculata. HtH1/HtH2 hybrid molecules were not found. By selective dissociation of HtH2 we isolated HtH1 which, as revealed by electron microscopy and SDS/PAGE, is present as didecamers of a approximately 400 kDa subunit. Immunologically, HtH1 and HtH2 correspond to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH)1 and KLH2, respectively, the two well-studied hemocyanin types of the closely related marine gastropod Megathura crenulata. On the basis of limited proteolytic cleavage, two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis, SDS/PAGE and N-terminal sequencing, we identified eight different 40-60 kDa functional unit…
Revelation of aroma potential of grape pomace and spent coffee ground by the use of microbial glycosidases.
2021
The food industry is evolving and tends to reduce its environmental impact, to control its waste and to valorise all of its production. Grapes and coffee are among the main agricultural products in the world and not all of the byproducts resulting from their processing are still valued today. New ways of valorisation are seeked in order to limit production losses. Yet, these byproducts are rich in glycosides, the amount of which may be from two to five times greater than that of the free volatile compounds. Grape pomace and spent coffee ground could be used to naturally produce volatile compounds from their glycosides. These volatile compounds could be useful in the production of cosmetics,…
