Small solid renal masses: Characterization by diffusion-weighted MRI at 3 T

AIM: To describe the appearance of small solid renal lesions (≤3 cm) on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to determine whether ADC measurements may help to differentiate benign from malignant small solid renal masses. Three cases with renal angiomyolipoma in Bourneville's disease are reported. In two patients advanced renal insufficiency developed, one being treated by chronic intermittent hemodialysis. In the third patient rupture of angiomyolipoma with severe retroperitoneal bleeding occurred. In one patient, tumorous enlargement initially was diagnosed only in the right kidney and preceded angiomyolipoma of the left kidney for several years. Purpose. This paper describes the role of MR imaging in the identification of the different macroscopic patterns of lipoma arborescens. Materials and Methods. Between June 1995 and January 2004, a total of 6387 MR examinations of the knee were retrospectively assessed for the presence of lipoma arborescens. Abstract Introduction Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is today considered the standard treatment for benign small adrenal tumors. An open question is the use of laparoscopy for large adrenal masses because of technical limitations and increased risk of malignancy. In this study we report our experience in laparoscopic adrenalectomy for adrenal masses larger than 6 cm. Methods Between January 2010 and December 2013 we performed 41 laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Sirolimus treatment of severe PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome: case report and in vitro studies

Background: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is caused by germ line mutations in the PTEN gene. Symptoms include cancer pre- disposition, immune deviations, and lipomas/lipomatosis. No causal standard therapy is available. We describe a therapeutic attempt with the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor sirolimus for a PHTS patient suffering from thymus hyperplasia and lipomatosis. Objective: The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate uncommon imaging evolutions of benign (i.e., cyst, hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia-like nodules, and hepatic angiomyolipoma) and malignant (i.e., HCC and non HCC malignancies) lesions in a cirrhotic liver. The content highlights relevant pathogenesis and imaging clues for proper differential diagnosis.
