Distribution, frequency and diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis in olive tree environments in Spain

1997

Summary Bacillus thuringiensis was isolated from samples collected from olive tree related habitats (olive groves, olive storage facilities and oil mills) of different olive producing regions in Spain. This bacterium was found in a high percentage (92%) of samples. From 72 samples analysed, 2244 sporulating colonies were selected and observed under phase contrast microscopy. From these, 414 colonies (18%) were classified as B. thuringiensis based on the production of parasporal crystals. A great variability of spore, crystal size and morphology was observed. The results indicate that olive groves are as rich as soil olive mills and olive storage facilities regarding the B. thuringiensis pop…

Seroprevalence of and risk factors for Leishmania seropositivity in a sample population of Western Sicily (Italy)

2013

Background: Leishmania is a vector-borne parasite responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for Leishmania infantum seropositivity in a sample of Sicilian population. Methods: A total of 260 subjects were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire and requested for an venous blood sample. Results: Overall, 36 subjects (13.8%) were seropositive against L. infantum with a statistically significant higher prevalence of positivity in older subjects (p=0.04). After adjustment for age, a higher risk for Leishmania seropositivity was found in subjects who had pets living outdoors and untreated with anti-p…

The Diversity of the Philippine Population

2017

A country of many islands, the Philippines is also a country of many languages. The Tagalog language of Manila has been chosen as the base of the national Pilipino language, even if Cebuano counts as many speakers. The languages of the Philippines have common grammatical structures, but wide differences in vocabulary. Contrary to Latin America where Spanish and Portuguese became the dominant languages, Spanish did not dominate the local languages, since colonial priests preferred to learn local languages rather than teaching Spanish to their flocks. English, as the second colonial language, is spoken much more, since the Americans educated Filipinos in English as part of their “benevolent a…

A Method Based on Multi-source Feature Detection for Counting People in Crowded Areas

2019

We propose a crowd counting method for multisource feature fusion. Image features are extracted from multiple sources, and the population is estimated by image feature extraction and texture feature analysis, along with for crowd image edge detection. We count people in high-density still images. For instance, in the city’s squares, sports fields, subway stations, etc. Our approach uses a still image taken by a camera on a drone to appraise the count in the population density image, using a kind of sources of information: HOG, LBP, CANNY. We furnish separate estimates of counts and other statistical measurements through several types of sources. Support vector machine SVM, classification an…

The importance of Hygienics and Clean Water Treatment in Valencia (1860-1910)

2016

Microbiota of sliced cooked ham packaged in modified atmosphere throughout the shelf life

2019

Abstract Fourteen lots of cooked ham in modified atmosphere packaging (CH) were analyzed within a few days from packaging (S) and at the end of the shelf-life (E), after storage at 7 °C to simulate thermal abuse. Five more lots, rejected from the market because spoiled (R), were included in the study. Quality of the products was generally compromised during the shelf life, with only 4 lots remaining unaltered. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicons resulted in 801 OTUs. S samples presented a higher diversity than E and R ones. At the beginning of the shelf life, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes dominated the microbiota, with Acinetobacter, Brochothrix, Carnobacterium, Lactobacillus, Prevotella, P…

Ecomorphological predictors of natal dispersal distances in birds.

2008

1. Dispersal is one of the key ecological parameters but it is very difficult to quantify directly. As a consequence, empirical studies often ignore dispersal or use indirect measures. 2. Ringing data have previously been used to estimate the natal dispersal distances of 47 British passerine bird species. This provides an excellent opportunity to examine the potential of various indirect measures to predict natal dispersal distances in British birds. 3. We use a phylogenetic comparative framework and single- and multipredictor models including ecomorphological, behavioural or ecological traits to predict natal dispersal distance. 4. A multipredictor model that includes Kipp's distance (a me…

Selecciin De Sub-Muestras De Gran Tamaao De La Mcvl Representativas De Las Prestaciones Del Sistema PPblico De Pensiones (Selection of High Size Sub-…

2015

The effectiveness of pre- and post-zygotic barriers in avoiding hybridization between two snapdragons (Antirrhinum L.: Plantaginaceae)

2014

Reproductive barriers play an important role in the maintenance of species boundaries. However, to date, few studies have provided a detailed analysis of reproductive isolation barriers between species or examined their importance in maintaining species identity. This is the first detailed study into pre- and post-zygotic reproductive isolation barriers in Antirrhinum, based on a mixed population with two species that rarely co-occur. The study revealed that pollinator constancy and preference and poor hybrid seed viability were the most important reproductive isolating mechanisms. Reproductive isolation was practically complete by both pre- and post-zygotic barriers. Average pre-zygotic is…
