International audience; In this study, we investigated whether the Agr communication system of the pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes was involved in adaptation and competitiveness in soil. Alteration of the ability to communicate, either by deletion of the gene coding the response regulator AgrA (response-negative mutant) or the signal pro-peptide AgrD (signal-negative mutant), did not affect population dynamics in soil that had been sterilized but survival was altered in biotic soil suggesting that the Agr system of L. monocytogenes was involved to face the complex soil biotic environment. In this work, we have investigated the evolutionary dynamics of a generalist pathogen, e.g., a virus population, that evolves toward specialization in an environment with multiple host types. We have particularly explored under which conditions generalist viral strains may rise in frequency and coexist with specialist strains or even dominate the population. If V is the time when in a Bellman-Harris branching model the k-th generation disappears out of the population, and if all individuals have exponentially distributed lifespans, the asymptotic behavior of the tail of the distribution of the extinction time V , P(V > t), is obtained, even if the distributions of the lifespans and the offspring sizes vary generation-dependent. Furthermore the times of extinction of several successive generations can be specified for the generation- independent case of the Markov branching model in continuous time. If the initial number of individuals and the absolute time grow up appropriately linked, a Poisson limit theorem for generation sizes will be given.

Global change has caused a worldwide increase in reports of Vibrio-associated diseases with ecosystem-wide impacts on humans and marine animals. In Europe, higher prevalence of human infections followed regional climatic trends with outbreaks occurring during episodes of unusually warm weather. Similar patterns were also observed in Vibrio-associated diseases affecting marine organisms such as fish, bivalves and corals. Importance sampling for Lambda-coalescents in the infinitely many sites model

We present and discuss new importance sampling schemes for the approximate computation of the sample probability of observed genetic types in the infinitely many sites model from population genetics. More specifically, we extend the 'classical framework', where genealogies are assumed to be governed by Kingman's coalescent, to the more general class of Lambda-coalescents and develop further Hobolth et. al.'s (2008) idea of deriving importance sampling schemes based on 'compressed genetrees'.
