Phytoplankton communities of polar regions–Diversity depending on environmental conditions and chemical anthropopressure
2015
The polar regions (Arctic and Antarctic) constitute up to 14% of the biosphere and offer some of the coldest and most arid Earth's environments. Nevertheless several oxygenic phototrophs including some higher plants, mosses, lichens, various algal groups and cyanobacteria, survive that harsh climate and create the base of the trophic relationships in fragile ecosystems of polar environments. Ecosystems in polar regions are characterized by low primary productivity and slow growth rates, therefore they are more vulnerable to disturbance, than those in temperate regions. From this reason, chemical contaminants influencing the growth of photoautotrophic producers might induce serious disorders…
Estimation of ordered response models with sample selection
2011
We introduce two new Stata commands for the estimation of an ordered response model with sample selection. The opsel command uses a standard maximum-likelihood approach to fit a parametric specification of the model where errors are assumed to follow a bivariate Gaussian distribution. The snpopsel command uses the semi-nonparametric approach of Gallant and Nychka (1987, Econometrica 55: 363–390) to fit a semiparametric specification of the model where the bivariate density function of the errors is approximated by a Hermite polynomial expansion. The snpopsel command extends the set of Stata routines for semi-nonparametric estimation of discrete response models. Compared to the other semi-n…
Individual variation of persistent organic pollutants in relation to stable isotope ratios, sex, reproductive phase and oxidative status in Scopoli's…
2017
Abstract: Little is known about the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and its consequences for seabirds in the Mediterranean basin. We characterised the plasma contaminant profile (polychlorinated biphenyls ΣPCBs; organochlorine pesticides ΣOCPs; polybrominated diphenyl ethers ΣPBDEs) of a population of the seabird Scopoli's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) that breeds in the southern Mediterranean (Linosa Island) and investigated (i) whether sex, stable isotope ratios (related to diet), reproductive phase (early incubation vs. late breeding season) and body mass explained variation in contaminant burden and (ii) whether they predict health-related variables. The predomi…
Survey on the presence of non-dioxine-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs) in loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) stranded in south Mediterranean coasts (Sicily, So…
2017
A total of 71 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) stranded along the coasts of Sicily (Southern Italy) were examined for nonâdioxine like polychlorinated biphenyl (NDL-PCB) levels in muscle and adipose tissue by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method. The results revealed 6 high-indicator congener (â6PCBIND) levels in 45% of the loggerhead turtles examined, with mean values of 980.39 ± 2508.39 ng/g wet weight in adipose tissue and 102.53 ± 238.58 ng/g wet weight in muscle tissue. The hexachloro and heptachloro PCB congeners were the most abundant in both the sample types. The highest NDL-PCB levels were reached in an adipose tissue sample of a logg…

Microbes and Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Marine Environment
2020
Marine pollution has increased reaching the entire marine environment, from the surface to the deepest sediment, and has become more concerning in the last 70 years. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a fraction of ocean waste that includes, among the others, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and plastic polymers. These chemicals have an extremely long half-life, and (bio)accumulate and damage the marine flora and fauna, and, ultimately, human health. Some organisms have evolved enzymes to attack POPs in the environment and transform them into biomass and CO2. Several microorganisms degrade many POPs in relatively short time. A wide variety of bacteria has been isolated with dif…
The trophic transfer of persistent pollutants (HCB, DDTs, PCBs) within polar marine food webs.
2017
Biomagnification (increase in contaminant concentrations at successively higher levels of trophic web), is a process that can transversally impair biodiversity and human health. Most research shows that biomagnification should be higher at poles with northern sites having a major tendency to biomagnify Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) through their marine food webs. We investigated the biomagnification degree into two marine trophic webs combining carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes and POP analyses. We showed that the Antarctic trophic web was more depleted than the sub-Arctic one and the differences highlighted for the basal part could explain the difference in length between them. Co…
Tietotekniikan valtakunnallisten oppisisältöjen toteutuminen Keski-Suomen peruskoulujen opetuskäytänteissä
2017
Tutkimus sai alkunsa kiinnostuksesta uusia Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteita kohtaan. Vuonna 2014 hyväksytty POPS asettui erityisesti tieto- ja viestintätekniikan opetuksen osalta vastaamaan perusopetuksessa havaittuihin puutteisiin ja ongelmiin. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää mitä uusia sisältöjä POPS14 tuo tietotekniikan opetukseen sekä kuinka noiden sisältöjen opetus toteutuu koulujen arjessa. Tutkimuksessa tunnistettiin tyypilliset ja yleisesti käytössä olevat TVT:n opetusmenetelmät ja niitä pyrittiin kuvailemaan laadullisen tutkimuksen keinoin. Tavoitteeseen päästiin lähinnä Opetushallituksen julkaisuihin kohdistuneen kirjallisuuskatsauksen, Keski-Suomen peruskouluj…
Our Assessment Using Palate Postoperative Problems Score (PPOPS): Tool for the Evaluation of Results in Palatal Surgery Techniques
2018
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by frequent episodes of collapse of upper airways during sleep. Prevalence of the disease is settled at about 3–7%. Today, palatal surgery is a reference point in OSAHS treatment and there are many different surgical techniques. The purpose of our work is to compare post-operative results of palate surgery techniques used in our practice in OSAHS patients, studying the degree of patients’ satisfaction with a recent score recommended by Rashwan et al. called PPOPS (Palate Post-Operative Problems Score). A retrospective study was performed on a sample of 40 patients subject to different palate surgery techniques for OSAS. …
